I'm just going to mention a few people.. I like most of their work, although I'm not sure if they will suite your tastes.. Sorry I can't be of more help...
Alan Moore
Neil Gaiman
Grant Morrison
All have excellent works, some have some not as great stuff.. I pretty much like everything I've read by Alan Moore though, comics and otherwise.

Got a few more that you might like.
Bone - Can't believe I almost forgot this one. Seriously one of the best comics I've ever read. It's about three little bones trying to get back to Boneville. They get lost and then lots of crazy stuff happens.
Exiles - It was good for most of the 100+ issues
The Incredible Hercules - the newest series. Its actually really funny.
House of M - I got really burned out by Marvel's nonstop crossovers but this one I can read over and over. If you're going to read this you may also have to read
Avengers Disassembled - It's not a necessary read but its as good a place as any to start in on Marvel Comics. Probably the best place.
North 40 - Ran for six issues. It was planned that way. It's fairly solid
NYX- Fairly depressing tale of a group of homeless teenage mutants who regardless form a tight familial bond. Its a good read.
Street Fighter legends - If you're into fighting games then you have to read these

You know what's a good place to start as well, DC's new 52 lineup. They resarted all their comics to issue #1 for a lot of titles, also they revamped the appearances of all the characters in the franchise. A vast majority of them were done by Jim Lee's designs (so no more outside underpants, lol). It started around the end of summer and beginning of fall, so they aren't that far in terms of stories. But so far they've been running pretty well. I personally went with the Batman series of comics, its been a good read and visually outstanding.
