I know this is probably a little late to ask this, especially since I've already started school for almost a year now... But how are you normally supposed to address your teachers in collage? Mr./Ms.? Professor? Or just by their first names?

Is it the same for university?

Depends on the prof's preferences.

I prefer 'prof' because it eliminates the need to remember names.

I tended to go for a "Sir" in most cases.

Just go by how they refer to themselves on the first day. If they ask you to call them anything else, go by that.



But to tell you the truth, I don't normally refer to them by name or status... I just start talking to them.

MPC does not work on my computer, but I have managed to get version 1.1.05 working (after trying about 20 times), so hopefully that will work. My PC is pretty messed up.

And if they don't tell you how to refer to them, graduate students are adjuncts and therefore never get the professor title and everyone else is just Professor. Err on the side of formality and most everyone will correct you on first use. I cringe when my students call me professor (and almost as much when someone obviously older than me uses any title of respect) but at the end of the day it's not a big deal.

I use VLC player and I can tell you that I have no idea what is an aero theme. If you're using Windows, I think VLC player's frames are like from Windows 98, if I remember correctly. If that's what you meant.


Never read Wizard's First Rule, but I tried to read Eragon a few years ago but couldn't get past the first few chapters (each chapter being some couple of pages long). From what you tell it seems like they would well fit into the same category.

Eragon's young adult lit of the same objective caliber. I think it very much does fall within the same categories.

Er, this is rather awkward as I fear you may find this response disappointing. I very much liked those books when I was about ten. From what I remember, they were fine for generic genre fiction, but as always genre fiction is essentially specialized pulp- it only does go so far. I've just been using the handle since I was, well, about ten, which is about a decade ago now. Old habits die hard.

On the latter series, I've never even heard of it. If no one in my rather large network of people with confirmed good taste has given it even a mention, chances are I won't pick it up unless a copy is placed directly in front of me (I do in fact read everything that's handed to me completely indiscriminately.)

Depends on our closeness.
If it's a professor I have good relationship with, I will call him by his first name.
If it's one of my professors, but I don't really know him, I call him..."Hey" , I find professor too formal for someone I see almost as frequently as my dad and first name too close for someone I don't know.
If it's a professor I have nothing to do with I call him professor

University works basically the same, except that you will hardly be close to many of your professors.




Huum... As Crenshinibon said, these series probably share lots of readers, but...no, I have read all of the Inheritance Cycle books, and they are better than Twilight.
Wizard's First Rule is so bad I have a hard time explaining it.... It looks like a 10 y/o english homework. A big one. Read 10 pages of the book online and you may get what I'm talking about.

Eragon is not the best book you will find out there, and I don't recommend reading it after masterpieces like A Song of Ice and Fire or The Kingkiller Chronicles, it will look really bad. But the author is coherent and can express himself better than a 10 y/o, his characters don't have the mind of a 10 y/o and are likeable(even though they are too "good") and the history is not THAT cliched.
A book worth its price. Try picking it up again.

Oh boy, here I am again:

does anyone know which font is most commonly used for displaying Japanese text?

I've got this file that has a combo of English and Japanese text. Some of the characters are appearing as boxes and I assume that means I've the wrong font.

Btw, I do have Japanese(IME) and Japanese installed on Windows7.

Maybe set your system locale to Japanese?

It turns into Japanese text once you change the system locale. That only applies to non-unicode, or basically non-English based characters.
