Yeah, I don't see the problem with some eye-candy. laugh More power to them.

You know, in the past, ecchi was very difficult to show, because most people were too conservative. However, thanks to the revolution started by Go Nagai, a mangaka, now it is more commonplace. This is part of change. eyes

where's the "I don't care how much ecchi there is in a series (as long as it is a good series)" option?

Depends on how it's approached. The fanservice in Mysterious Girlfriend X is done very well, subtle, yet well integrated into the plot.

I'd say it's less of a question of how much and more a question of what type. A female character who likes to show off her body? Sure. It's when a character can't go through an entire day without falling on a girl and ending up in an embarrassing position, or reaching for something without looking and accidentally grabbing a girl's chest. That's when I have a problem.

In other words, it's a matter of whether or not it seems forced.

Well, I will be honest. I am a straight male possibly otaku, so I do enjoy ecchi scenes. But, I have read several stories that just had ecchi to have it...I couldn't get more than a couple of chapters into the story. I'm talking about the "Oh, why does it have to be so windy on the day that I had to borrow my older sister's special panties? And, my shirt keeps popping opened because my breasts grew again..." kind of story that does the same thing every chapter.

Sometimes, I think "how many times can To Love-ru possibly have a tentacle monster scene?" (it seems to happen once every few chapters). But, I always remember how cute all of the characters are and I keep reading the manga...then, there is a really good chapter that actually has some character development in it and I forget all about my doubts. And, repeat.

A well written story doesn't need ecchi to be good. But, if you take a good story and add in some well drawn ecchi scenes that works with the story, then it can be even better.

"Just enough to make it funny"

o.O
When has ecchi ever been "funny" ?
Would've voted if there was a "Not too much/Not too little" option >_>

I agree with some ppl here and disagree with others.

Ecchi is never funny... at least, I don't find it funny myself.

To the person who said that 'girls and GAY males' don't like ecchi, what the hell?! What about girls who like yaoi? We love our BL ecchi thanks very much! laugh I'm sure there are also girls out there who like straight ecchi too!

I don't like straight ecchi but that's because I'm not into big boobs and blatant crotch shots- I have read quite a few manga with ecchi but they all bored me or grossed me out- if the girls looked more like normal women and less like little kindergarten girls with massive footballs on their chest, I may have found it tolerable! wink

What can I say? Males are all perverts, minus the BL community which consists 60% of rapists and others who have nothing but sex in their mind when they hear the word love. In general, boys think with their underbodies.

As a girl, as you'd expect I avoid ecchi. There's really nothing to it other than to satisfy the male lust of boobs and pants. So how can it be funny? The only thing it does is minus from the manga quality. Of course, there are ones I've come to accept over the course of time, such as Eden no Ori. But in no way does that mean ecchi is good, it just means the series is either good enough or doesn't piss me off as much.

Ecchi, I don't mind VERY VERY little, but it's better it has none at all. Exceptions can be made, but I will never ever want to read those 3x sized boobs with utterly disgusting pants. We girls are more refined than that!

The only time ecchi will improve the manga is when the manga sucks, sucks to hell, and no one will read it unless you put a large amount of ecchi to attract males.

There is a scene in Ane-doki where a pretty high-schooler goes to her male friend's middle school after living with him for a while to bring him his lunchbox. While everyone in the hallway wonders who this beauty is, she calls the name of the boy she is looking for after locating him, and, although he is very embarrassed and resisting, she nonchalantly says 'Kou-chan!' and plants his face in her breasts while hugging him in front of all his shocked classmates, including the girl he likes. I thought this ecchi scene was pretty funny, and I laughed.

Maybe you should find a convent somewhere. Just to be safe. Who knows what might happen otherwise with all those perverts, rapists and lusting men lurking on every street corner. Poor you...

I pretty much really can't stand it! There are some manga where it is necessary but others where it is not, for example elfen lied. It pretty much ruin the manga for me actually. confused

^ THIS.

Ecchi is most of the time annoying and feels forced, but in some manga it is has been used in a better way, making some scenes funnier.

@ Ibleda:

C'mon, "60% Males"? 60% Straight/Bi Males are Rapists? Remaining 40% Straight/Bi Males are complete perverts and sex minded? Seriously? Don't you think that's some GREAT exaggeration?

I do agree that majority of teenagers and youths think most of the time about sexual stuff, there are many guys that always think about sex and girls, and there are guys who are psychologically so sick that they even molest/harass/rape a girl when they find the right opportunity.

BUT, stating 'In general, boys think with their underbodies.' is nothing more than a hate for boys/males.

Age group plays a main role, and the sexual desire of males (and girls) reduces with the increase in their age. So obviously, you can't call "60% Males" rapists and remaining 40% sex minded.

That would mean that your male grandparents are either rapist or sex minded. (Please don't take any offense!)

What I'm telling you, is to learn to use better words for expressing your opinion.
Think about your statement and remarks before mentioning it publicly.

Don't involve "everyone", but only those that deserve it.
You should have stated something like- "Majority of youths are inclined towards sexual stuff, and some of them are of sick mentality (who commit crimes like molestation, sexual harassment and rape)."

I don't think anyone could deny the fact that most of us young males are 'inclined towards sexual stuff'.
So, it'd would have sounded way better.

I don't know whether you know this fact or not, but even "Girls" molest/Harass boys.
I'm not kidding here. Use 'Mr. Google' if you don't believe me.
You'll find a lot of cases on the net.

Girls have a greater "Sexual drive" than males when they get horny, for your information.
That's the reason many of them turn into so-called "sluts" to fulfill their sexual desire.

In other words, girls could be way more 'sex minded' than guys.
You'll find only a few "Bi Males" but a ton of "Bi Girls".
When the girls don't get enough from males, they turn toward their own gender, girls, for their fulfillment.

Conclusion:

Majority of guys are - perverted (level varies from 'a little bit perverted' to "disgustingly perverted")

Majority of girls are - sex minded (level varies from 'a little bit sex minded' to "a complete slut")

laugh cool

When a series focuses mainly on panty shots and gravity defying breasts, it makes the series, well, not good. *coughhighschoolofthedeadcough*

But I got nothing against perverted jokes like in Seitokai Yakuindomo where they didn't rely nearly as much on showing the naughty as I expected them to.

That and like someone said earlier, constant accidental groping is annoying. And that didn't really happen in Seitokai. So yeah.

Just depends on how they do it.

I voted none at all. Ecchi has never struck me as funny. (I wonder why... *female*) I don't even particularly mind ecchi, but the way it's usually portrayed is decidedly unfunny and overdone to the point where it's completely worn out. Ecchi straddles (no pun intended) but rarely crosses the line into explicitness, and the limitations are obvious. Very, very few series that focus on ecchi fanservice benefit at all from the ecchi. In fact, it's often merely frosting on a cake that doesn't need any—but people come for the frosting and stick around 'cause the cake is actually much better than they were expecting.

Or something like that. biggrin I actually like series that toe the line a little, but if ecchi exists merely to shock and please male readers, count me out. Same with shoujo fanservice, for that matter. If the plot and the characters do not benefit from it, it's probably not necessary.
