Hey I've always wondered how Narutofan can stay afloat. I mean they're distributing illegal manga, and getting paid for it. I can't understand how we ourselves stay afloat, scanlation groups and stuff, but what Narutofan is doing is much worse. How many "cease and desist" letters do you think Tazamo has ignored?

The government just doesn't give a f**k. They have better things to do like fight over whether Attack of the Clones or Phantom Menace sucks more.

This is true...It has always amazed me how Naruto is still being distrubuted even after it's licensed. While manga like Gakuen Alice has stopped almost completely, how Naruto can be found practicly anywhere amazes me.

that doesnt amaze me, that's just normal piracy, what amazes me is that Tazmo can make money off illegal distributions without being brought in by some sort of authorities (dunno if this would fall under US, Japan, or Int'l copyright law)

You are allowed to cuss on this forum, just not extensively:

No hardcore swearing. It's okay every now and then, but keep it minimal.

So long as it's just once in a while I think it's tolerable to the mods, just don't make a habit of it by putting one in every post.

Is it wrong of me to download the manga from them since it's still free on their site?

I don't pay the website a penny though it's possible by visiting the site internet add companies pay Tazmo.

Viz already knows about Tazmo. It's fairly obvious since Viz voiceactors and I'm pretty sure the director, at one point, has visited the forums. In fact, I'm pretty sure they have contacted him before. Why don't they do anything? Who knows, maybe because it generated fandom, or it's so big that even if they stop Tazmo, they won't be able to stop the, literally dozens, of other places that also redistribute the manga and they're like "Whatever, I give up".

Conspiracy theory here... if Viz knows about Tazmo and people are paying for what would normal be free on the internet, maybe Viz is getting a cut. Like Splintered said, if they shut him down, people will go elsewhere and most likely get it free so why not get money out of the people willing to pay.

So would TokyoPop, Del Ray, and other manga/anime distributors get a cut? or does Tazmo strictly use Viz distributed stuff

My guess is that if the licensing companies order Narutofan is cease and desist *selling* scanlations, they would also have to order scanlation groups to cease and desist creating scanlations. To order the site to simply stop distributing scanlations *for money* would imply that they condone piracy as long as it is *free*, and that would be anti-thetical to the whole notion of licensing a series, publishing it as a book, and making people pay to read it. Simply put, shutting down Narutofan for selling scanlations would create a whole new set of problems the companies, because it would imply that they support scanlations as long as no one is paying money for them. And obviously, the licensing companies do not support scanlations, free or otherwise. They can't pick and choose. Hence, no big name company like Viz or Dark Horse has tried to shut Narutofan down.

So basically, that leaves it to us, the fans. We should step up the anti-Narutofanness, spread the word, keep on putting up the good fight. We shouldn't just sit around waiting for Viz to shut down his site, because they won't. Shutting down Narutofan needs to be a grassroots kind of campaign.
