Hello! I’m recruiting because I want to try starting a project I’ve wanted to work on for the past few months.

User Posted Image

Aim for the Ace (Ace o Nerae!, エースをねらえ !) is a 1970s shoujo manga about a girl and her struggles to become good at tennis. It’s a really charming series (I’m saying this as a fan of the anime) and even influenced the series Aim for the Top! Gunbuster (another major influence of the series was, I kid you not, Top Gun), which was directed by Hideaki Anno of Evangelion fame and is probably one of the best mech OVAs created. There’s an anime series, film, drama adaption and its anime has been licensed in Italy, France and Spain, but no decent English translation of the manga seems to exist online.

So I’m looking for people to help on a scanlation project. The manga includes furigana. The manga is 18 volumes long, but obviously I’m not asking anyone to commit to a ~3000 page translation at this point.

I would be looking to find/provide the raws (a few volumes are around online, but I’m willing to buy and scan if need be) and possibly clean and type-set the scans, providing nobody else wants to do that. Really what I’m looking for is translators (Japanese-English), so if anyone would like to apply, please PM me. If anyone else would like to help out in the form of editing or proof-reading or whatever, then feel free to get in touch too!

Hello, I will gladly translate and clean your manga with my group, if you help us with getting raws for another series by the name of "Sekai no hate"

Good luck

I got the raws, dunno if it's all of them but I think it is. Haven't read the end yet. Good quality even. Still, go find some people like translator and editor who wanna do this.

This is a good ol golden age manga together with Attack no. 1! (I like no.1 better laugh )

Shoujo! Fighto!

PS: Sekai no hate is nowhere close to be as good as this golden piece.

Thanks for your response T1! I'm really hoping to find people who are interested in helping get a nice quality scanlation out, because everything about the series is just so charming.

I did decline the offer of help in exchange with getting raws for Sekai no Hate, because there are very few series where I would spend time and/or money finding raws, and Aim for the Ace just happens to be one of them.

Attack No. 1 looks really cute and fun in the same ways as Aim for the Ace, so I might check that out - thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I would love to help you. I am studying Japanese and translating it's a good way to learn the grammar. I am willing to translate, clean and help with anything else.

Cool now there's only a need of an editor. Hopefully a shoujo editor. They do their stuff right.

Well it depends on if you, fourze, wants sfx redrawn or not. First is harder than second one.

I can pr and qc and release on irc through bot and on batoto as reader. I'm against mangafox and it's policy to earn on scanlations, counterfeit stuff, broken copyright games.

Though it's going to be with House of Scans. The groups policy isn't to do only shoujo and won't ever be. It's to do stuff which is awesome so this title fits the label perfectly. wink

Edit: It's also fine not to work with me. I don't care, as long as it gets released biggrin

Honestly, I'm not very knowledgeable in regards to how the scanlating community and such works, so any advice given would be helpful! You seem to know your stuff, T1, so any input you have would be very much appreciated.

For sound effects and such, I thought leave them as is but include an unobtrusive SFX: note below the panel? Unless someone who feels confident in their redrawing skills steps up, in which case I'd leave it up to their judgement.

As far as image editing and such goes I consider myself a jack of all trades but master of none, so while I'm willing to pick up any odd jobs, it'd be great to have anyone with more expertise to fill the roles.

I've had a look at the raws - the art is very simple. Even if someone was to redraw all the SFX, it wouldn't take much time.
Unfortunately, it's not my cup of tea, so I can't help you. Well, okay - I can, but I don't want to ^^;

In any case, good luck~

You can PM me if you need a temporary (freelance) cleaner/redrawer for some project. Especially if it's something with nice art.
Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.

I could commit to translating the first volume (I do have summer quarter so I don't think I can do it alone).

I don't wanna promise too much just in case I get overloaded with school and work. ): Do want others to read this manga though! ^^

Gradonil_Ral - Thank you for checking it out, anyway!

flowinmyboat - Thank you for your offer! I think we might have some other people interested, so I'd hope you wouldn't be working alone. I totally understand that life gets hectic though, so if you find yourself too busy to do it, that's a-okay.

I found this simple explanation on the jobs of the scanlation.
Not all jobs are vital for a scanlation, but... the more, the merrier, the faster, the easier and the better.

Raw Provider/Scanner
The raw provider is expected to either scan the series in for us or buy it and we'll scan it in.

Translator
The translator translates the manga into English. Will need to have a firm grasp of the Japanese language.

Proofreader
The proofreader looks over the translator's work while comparing it to the original raws to check for mistakes. Mistakes include (but are not limited to) grammar, missing texts, wording, and spelling. Knowing Japanese isn't a requirement, but a plus. Also having a college-level understanding of the English language would be helpful.

Cleaner
Cleaners dedicate to clean, level, rotate, crop, resize, delete text, redraw, and edit more sound effects. An editing program (like Photoshop) is needed.

Typesetter
Typesetters are responsible for typing the proofread translations onto the cleaned scans. An editing program (like Photoshop) is needed.

Editor
The editor is a combination of the cleaner and typesetter.

Quality Control
The quality control's job is to find and fix any mistakes made by any of the previous jobs. Must have an excellent grasp of the English language, an editing program is needed.

Okay, I'm back. Had to finish some stuff. Anyway, here we go:

Ahhh nothing to worry about. I know what I'm doing. All those positions are vilal for scanlations if you want a good scanlation. Like I mentioned we got:

2 translators (given they can't work all the time which is fine since they can vary or change)
Proofreader and qualitychecking can be done by me. I got enough experience to fulfill these.
Editing, you can do that, fourze.

I agree with that there's no need to draw sfx if you leave the sfx as a note under the panel. (well Glass Mask was too special for me to not redraw the sfx wink )

You can always find me on irc in either #shi-ki (dead group) or the newly made one #hos. Well you can also find me other places too but these days it's those two and #aerandria. I'm trying to not be in 20 channels anymore. So if you want to sort stuff out fast, just get hold of me there. wink
