At first I was sure he was a boy, but after reading here I firmly believe that Haku is, in fact, a girl. Please read the link before you go off calling be an idiot for even thinking that Haku might be a girl.

It is flawed by the fact that kishi train of thought does not run that deep...
and I did not vote...

Yeah, I did consider Kishi's limited brain power.

Perhaps it was the author's intent to create an ambiguous character. In other words, maybe he doesn't know the gender either.

But I wouldn't expect something like that from Naruto. Naruto is too shallow for that stuff. At the same time, there's no other reason for the ambiguity, so I am left with little recourse.

That's right: I posit that there's only one reason we are left unable to identify the gender of a character that is, in the long run of the series, kind of minor, is that of artistic expression of some sort or another.

Or it could be grandstanding, like Rowling's gay Dumbledore.

If the Japanese text is translated on the website from http://www.mangaupdates.com/postreply.php, http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/naruto2002/persons_f.html. It says that Haku is beautiful LIKE a girl, meaning he could not be one.

I also did not vote, I can't believe I just participated in this discussion too... >.<

didnt really like the logic in the argument that since s/he like kabuza he was thus a girl and not gay (he actually said earlier in the post that that was bad evidence). but really these are japanese comics we're talking about. everyother series has a okama/crossdressing/gay character, it's not weird for a kids series like naruto to have a gay or femme character (well maybe not in the US dub...)

Haku = boy.
As to reason for dressing/acting like female, loyal as a puppy,
Mori Ranmaru, shudo.

There were cases of "beautiful boys" in Japan's history, not surprising it would end up as something kishi pulled from.

Early naruto was ridiculously simple, cool ninjas and cooler jutsu. Since sasuke was fire kishi had to shut him down with water and ice, giving naruto the spotlight with the friendship act. Simple development without excess thought for the rest of the story.

So why would kishi put in so much thought into a character that would end up dead and never mentioned again in the series by making haku a female-desguising-as-a-boy-who-looked-like-a-girl?

Simple, he didn't.
The proof? From reading the manga, has the series ever made you think what the back-back-back story/meaning is to something? Has there ever been deep and profound meanings to any part of the naruto series?

No.

Haku was male, if he was female, it would've ruined the joke kishi made in the forest. He doesn't exactly go back on his jokes now does he?

It's over-thinking to assume haku being female, do you really think kishi would do something like that while naruto's transforming into naked women all the time? It's really too much work for a throwaway character in the series and wouldn't be consistant with the series/author.

Haku is 100% tranny. I don't see why you need a thread for this one...

Haku is a boy. @_@

In Japan, true beauty transcends gender. So that's why he looks like a girl,... I think. >.< It's not even relevant, anyways.

Come on.. Haku was a boy..
Is there really anything to debate about?..
Like "daed" mentioned, there are okamas/crossrdeasers and stuff like that in kids' manga..
So, what can I say.. he was gay.(which made me love him even more) . bigrazz laugh

he wasn't gay as much as he was submissive, if zabuza was a chick with the same demeanor haku would have still been as loyal. i think you guys forget that domination is the sexual impetus for the japanese male, not beauty.

Haku is a boy, and he loving Zabuza has much to do with Zabuza giving him a reason to live when he had given up on life, if the person who gave him a reason to live was a woman i guess he would love that person too, so not much to do with being gay or not.

About Haku being gay or not, I'm not sure myself..
Just thought, "he looks so feminine, in a manga.. so, maybe he's gay?^^" laugh
