I chose the New World, 'cause why not? I've read a lot of (Western) books that have time travel to Ancient (usually just Rome), Medieval, and Regency (~Industrial) times and so other ages are very rare to encounter.

If we're talking about eras in the East, I find quite a lot of periods from China really interesting, but I'm not terribly sure about the years. All my Chinese history comes from dramas. Oddly enough, I find Japanese history/historical increeeedibly boring, like no joke. I rarely read historical Japan mangas because I can never finish them. Even time travel to historical Japan is a struggle. I dunno why.

Near Future or Post-Apocalyptic (voted for the last one), because in both the author has more freedom to create new things, new rules etc and I just love to explore this imaginative world. I love to see others POV about the future and what will happen with the Earth (like in The Terminator etc) and I would love to create my own POV about it.

Near Future is pretty cool, but there is something really interesting about Post-Apocalyptic, that feeling that everything is lost, but at the same time the possibility to start again. Also, in this setting, the human nature is always a bit extreme, intense, so I think I can explore my characters more without being forceful.

Also, some mangas about the past aren't very deep in exploring that time history (like about World War II and Nazis, it doesn't explore the details that much like Art Spiegelman's MAUS does) and most of them are about Japan past history (understandable, of course), which I'm not very fond of it... So maybe it is difficult to make a search about that time and limit your possibilities to it (like, you can't have a airplane in prehistoric...), creating a new one is easy (just reading a bit about the research Kaoru Mori did for Emma is a example of how "difficult" it is).

I picked Medieval. I've always loved all things about that period(Crusader Kings anyone? xp). I like stories that are bound by rules(Time-travelling aside) unlike some period in the future where limits are only bound by the writer's imagination. It may limit the creativity of the story but I think it's much more fun to get play around the "rules" of the past and not just make things up for the future. I like futuristic stuff too but whenever I make up futuristic stories in my head, I always feel like I'm just pulling stuff out of my a$$.

Gosh it's so hard to choose but I shall. I love time travel/historical fiction mangas because it's a small recount of what life might have been in previous centuries.

Voted Ancient because it just seems interesting to me. It hasn't been done that often. Red River is by far the best with so much history. I'd love to see more of those! I'd especially love to see imperial India, a story about Nur Jahan aka Mehrunnisa (and Emperor Jahangir aka Salim) -it's an amazing story. I'd love to see someone adapt it from the Twentieth Wife by Indu Sundaresun (great historical fiction novel with sequels~it's a novel because there is limited knowledge about Nur Jahan but enough to be compared to Queen Victoria IMO). I also enjoy eastern ancient civilization. It's fascinating, even though it isn't time travel- Song of the Long March aka Chang Ge is spot on. Also when a mangaka tackles history, it shows quite a lot of devotion on their part because it isn't easy to write to a historical standpoint versus a future standpoint.

As for the rest of the options, they're all quite Eurocentric/westernized. It follows its historical timeline so I can't say anything about Eastern civilization and the rest of the world. (I guess I would stick that in with Ancient? but I quite like reading mangas involving the east adopting the western culture too and that is by far totally not "ancient") WIth that in mind, I'd like Medieval, then Renaissance.

The age of exploration and colonization is quite depressing when I think about it since it's basically exploitation and looting of other civilizations so nah....

Other than that, future and post-apocalyptic are usually a shoe in because as humans, it's in our nature to look towards the future. It's always interesting to wonder about what will happen next and anything can happen--it's a blank canvas for imaginative artists.

I picked near future too, because there simply aren't many (any??) manga of my preferred genre in that category. It would be really interesting to read something like that- most of the other ones have been done at least once before.

...What does this have to do with this week's poll...?

edit: I just realized you were probably referring to last week's poll.

I think a prehistoric manga would be awesome. I can't think of any manga off the top of my head that involves that.

i love post-apocalyptic stories. the thought of how advanced people start from the bottom again or even apocalyptic, dealing with the catastrophe itself (alien invasion? deadly pandemic? nuclear war?) is really interesting to me, especially if the atmosphere/setting alludes to the earth recovering and reclaiming giant cities for its own again.

hmmm...there isn't an alternate history/reality option? gundams in WWII! oh well.

my favorite historical time period for a story to take place is the taisho/victorian era, though. i dunno what it is about that period that sets me aflame. who knows.

Ancient all the way, I'm quite a fan of greek myth and norse myth, they're all some very great references, whether it's manga, novels, or games. And even if I somehow can't use fantasy in it, then I just have to switch to real history, Pharaoh, Persian wars, etc. biggrin

I would like to point out something...
Has there ever been a decent Prehistoric manga... like ever? Novel sure... like Death in the Time of Ice , Stonehenge , The Gathering Night , etc....

However, I have never seen a good Japanese interpretation of Prehistoric times.

Most of them are just kind of too cliche or a parody of cavemen sterotypes.

Wrong actually. Closest poll was favorite setting/background for a series, but it's still different
