awhile back, i recommended a manga to a friend, only to have him bash it after merely reading 5 chapters of it. after telling him to force read it through all the way to the 10th volume, only then did he took it back. (the manga was BECK, btw)

so, my question: how long does it take for you to pass judgement on a manga you just started reading?

me? for a manga that has gone on for more than 10 volumes, i'd read those first 10 volumes, just to get a feel of what the manga is all about, before i start judging it. it's understandable how some mangas (sue me if that ain't the plural) has a horrible start the first few volumes (Berserk, anyone?) . from experience, the interesting stuffs usually starts around that 10th volume. unfortunately, if it does deliver, this doesn't usually mean it'd be a good ride later on... (*cough*Naruto&Inuyasha*cough*)

for those with less volumes than that, i'd download the whole thing and read it in one go. not much to say there, unless the series was pretty good (Pretty Face!!! Midori No Hibi!!! WHY!!!!!!confused?). as for the newer ones, i just follow along till i either get bored ( hello, Blue Dragon~!) or it gets to the 100th chapter, which with no surprise, is around volume 10 (Fairy Tail and Mx0 is doing just fine....so far)

btw, someone lock this thread if theres already something like this. looked through a mere 6 pages of the forum. i either missed it or its a really old topic....

Depends on the art, plot, and scan quality.

If hte art is unbearably bad then at most one chapter.
If the plot sucks so far, I give it another 3 volumes before shoving it aside.
If the scan quality blows, one look at the first page and it's byebye.

Id say on the first few chapters, you get to know the beginning of the story, the art and all

Once I read a manga I don't stop until I finish...no matter how crappy the art is...I don't judge by the plot since it has the chance of getting better...

Far too soon. If the art is good but the plot sucks, I might drop it from the first 3 pages, especially if it's shoujo.
If the art sucks but the plot is good I might stuggle a bit..depends on how good the plot is.
If both of them suck, and if it's shoujo too, I'll start yelling at the screen...whoops...shouldn't have mentioned that ^_^...*hides from psychiatrists*

i often read all that is released to date, and then if i didn´t like it much, just delete it.
But i think reading one volume is enough to get a general impression (still there are some exceptions, like The Violinist of Hameln)

You don't need to hide from psychiatrists for yelling at a screen. My friend does that all the time, and he's far more sane than I.

Anyways, I'll usually pass judgement on a manga in the middle of the second volume. Honestly, if I'm not enjoying myself until the tenth volume then I don't know why I'm reading in the first place. This stuff is supposed to be entertainment, after all.

It depends on how long it is. Typically 2nd-3rd volume is when I can definitively decide I don't like something. If it comes highly recommended by a friend that shares similar tastes, or just a lot of people, I take it upon myself to read more to understand why, although usually I just think "Why the heck did they recommend this?!" instead.

in my case ,
before i start reading a manga, i expect certain
things from it, If it doesn`t offer them
i could let it go even from the first chapter
to read something else. But, that is of course
temporary, after some time i always come
back and check it again thoroughly.
So far, im not proud to say, but i ve
finished any manga i`ve started even if it is crap.
(has only happened very few times to me though)
For example right now , i`ve started
kurozuka, blade of the immortal, angel sanctuary
e.t.c. and i`ve dropped them cause they weren`t
what i was expecting them to be.

Screaming at the screen and talking to the characters isn't too sane right? And I also "hear" voices of the characters. Some of them just piss me off
eyes

@Tsuto:true, VoH starts extremely boring but it's the one manga I don't regret for which I don't regret forcing myself to read past vol 2:afterwards, it's a blast biggrin

I can't think of a series I've completely stopped reading that isn't completed. Usually I simply I just make it less of a priority to read if I don't care too much for it (i.e.- Vampire Doll)

For Shojo? 4 Chapters.

Anything else? 2 volumes.

As I tend to hate Shojo a lot, I can't bear it normally after 4 chapters if its really bad. So yeah.

I read 'em all as long as they don't
revolve around boring topics like
teen relationship problems.
When they do it, I quit 'em.
