Ok so this might just be a personal case but sometimes I remember manga as though it's an anime. Like when i remember scenes they seem voiced instead of written and the black and white is either forgotten or remembered as in color. Anyone else have this?

Yeah, I feel the same about manga or any other memorable narrative. But that might be because any fiction I read gets voiced in my head. Don't ask me for the reasons, but I remember each character with their own voice. This phenomenon has spoiled a few screen adaptions for me because the actual voice actors deviated too much from my imaginary voices.

Oh so you do the voice thing also biggrin it's weird because I even sometimes find myself saying words differently in my head compared to aloud. Do you voice every word you read in your head?

edit: not weird in a bad way but weird in a funny way that's kinda odd. Gahhh I'm so bad at explaining things bigrazz

I never had that. I just stare at the page and could not even imagine colour.
You hear voices in your head ? Hm. I know of comic critics who imagine the 90s cartoon voices when they read.

You're not the only one whose imaginary articulation differs from the real one. And don't worry, I also think that it's strange, but I'm glad that I've found a comrade in this biggrin

Almost everything I read gets voiced over in my head, even text messages. For example, your posts' voice sounds like a lively, slightly higher-pitched female. The only texts that I don't voice over are academic ones.

What about your voices? Do you only hear them while reading manga?

That's funny because that's literally the writing style I was going for when I was writing out my reply. When I read your posts it sounds like a guy in his late 20s that has a slightly rough(crackily) undertone in his voice but it's still very smooth(also this is probably unnecessary but he has a plain american accent with no specific origin.)

When I'm reading news articles and educational materials I read in my head with a slightly smoother version of my voice but when I'm reading anything that has characters in it I automatically start voicing them. Nothing extreme like a huge hulking macho man but for those guys Im able to use something similar to what I imagine for your post but less smooth and more of a quiet guy that has a slightly deeper voice. For female characters it's very hard to say the least. All females sound the same to me in real life except maybe for a few differences here and there... It's funny though because I'm female.

When I start reading series I always look for info about their color details such as covers and descriptions so when I actually read I can imagine them in color slightly. That's probably why I can do the color thing.

When you normally read do you just hear your own voice or do you not even have that? Legit question because I have no idea if that's normal either. I would assume hearing your own voice is how someone normally processes reading but I've never thought to ask someone else that so if this is a dumb question please excuse me.

That's far from what I sound like but interesting nonetheless. It shows a lot about how much we project our impression of the character or of the writer onto their voice.
By the way, do you also see a character when you read fiction? For that's what happens to me in varying degrees. I picture main characters very clearly, sometimes even down to the smallest details, but side characters tend to remain a little hazy.

your voice may be influenced by your image. That or I suck at explaining. bigrazz

Like purely text based works? Yes it's like watching a movie but only slightly slower because I can't read as fast as the actions would happen but a movie nonetheless. It's true that side characters are a bit hazy but I think that's just because of a lack of details in the story in order to get a clear picture of them. In other words main characters are 500 piece puzzles that are complete and have all the pieces but side characters are 50 piece puzzles that are missing pieces. By pieces I mean their very complexity because authors don't like to give too much complexity to a side character when they can make the main character more complex.

People may find it odd but manga, anime, movies, and novels are all the same to me and the only real difference I find is that i prefer anime and movies when I'm eating or about to go to bed.

Nah, it must be the picture because your explanations make so much sense to me that it's eerie. We seem to process written media exactly same way, only that I prefer manga and books before going to bed. It's even more puzzling when I consider that you're the first one with whom I share both the visual and the auditory experience.
Am I right to presume that you recall even non-conversational lines or quotes more by the tone of your inner narrator's voice and less by their content?

Now, I'm really curious about how other people feel when they read manga or fiction in general.

@residentgrigo Would you give us some insight into your reading experience?

l have have libraries of random knowledge in my mind as i barely stop/minimize my sleep cycle to a workable minimum. Weather if it´s textbook or a comic/manga i only hear my own voice like above my eye level when i read. I do know how other people sound like in my headbut these i also hear as calmer versions of me. As i quirt i sometime tie my hair together into a ponytail to not feel it too much and be one with the picture/text/game when i know this will take a while. Samurai Ponytail = shit get´s done or i am cleaning.
I cross my legs on my chair or put one under the other. If i have to think while reading for a bit then i look up for a seconds and go on. Time is relative after all. I may also lean in while touching my temple or i will stroke my bread with the hand in use. Everything i accomplish at home is down at my PC with a 27 Zoll monitor and i am very good at multitasking. About the PC thing. Digital colored stuff(every comic since 2000) becomes alive and if a mangaka know what he /she is doing then the black is multiple color shades too. Adding color to Berserk or Real or the Walking Dead would kill it in a second. Covers or painting are something else but also represent another artistic expression. I know the right color of the hair and setting not because i have seen 100+ WD covers but because the art tells me so: http://media.comicbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/final-f ate-of-rick-grimes.png
Stale paper is not the best choice for me anymore as it sings less to me.

I listen to ost´s 95% of the time while reading. Is it deep/dark independent or "real" seinen ? Susumu(Berserk)/Hotline Miami or the new Parasyte ost or 80s metal. Something activating. If i am trying to get into something for hours i go for a composer like Gregson Williams(MGS) or Hans Zimmer or Christopher Drake(new Batman stuff ) or a classic movie/ Final Fantasy ost. So something atmospheric. Also good for shonen/action or superheroes. Female targeted publication or calm slice of life/independent publications go together with Vangelis(Blade Runner) or Kenji Kawai(GitS/Patlabor) or surprisingly Naruto (a lot of calm/melancholic music) and classical composers. If i have a soundtrack to the manga/comic/book because of a great adaptation then even better. The great thing a about-not acted medium is the lack actors. If it is well done it is also always perfect in my mind. I consider such mediums more "pure" then live action/theater. Liam Neeson was Schindler once but now he "takes" people.
Every time i see actors doing their craft i have production analysis mode in my mind on backup it may get technical fast. Nothing wrong with movies/tv and i watch as much as i read but but in a non-human medium i see another word. If a comic/book succeeds at something i mostly stick in story but if i notice how amazing the lighting in Hannibal is them total immersion good night ! With an unmoving picture or some form animation i can accept that "person" as the actor. The VA is just backup. Thus my favorite Batman movie is The Dark Knight Return(voiced by Robocop !) and not the Dark Knight. Both 10/10 but one expression is preferred.
DKR is also a comic first and that is the best version with the new Darke ost over it as topping. I also listen to books on tape(during work or gaming) mostly where i hear the professional reader and i can finish 10 or more books in a month if i want like this. I do everything i listed to get "life" in my reading and i get to kno wthe word of music too.
A few years ago i used to just stare at the page when i read but adding the seasoning of music as it does not take away time and can help is my way to roll now. When i have to go over the narrative/visuals motives and my knowledge is not enough i the music-tab and continue it when i have come to a conclusion. So the PC is like my second brain. So i take my hobby seriously and you now may "get" my reading list better. Akira goes with everything: http://youtube.com/watch?v=g4cV8S5xVSw&index=1& list=PLy3Rzik5sHLnQJN2uTbArMZd9xKlcGdwb
Edit: I also have no pictures in my head when i read books. I may be a robot.
