Are there any manga similar to star wars?

No mecha, or if there's mecha, I don't want the manga to revolve around it. Also, not too much focus on politics or wars.

Star Wars is a pretty complicated series with lots of different themes. Is there any one thing or idea you liked?

Maybe Full Metal Panic! Sigma, but you should read the prequel first.

Read the R rated and award winning Saga by Image comics. It may be no manga (but some viewers have it) but it is a 10/10. Or watch the original Clone Wars(9/10) http://youtube.com/watch?v=c__EdPiU0No
What about the Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Harlock universe ?

I thought I would share that there is a manga version of the original trilogy (Star Wars: A New Hope). I own them and they are pretty good.

Is it the "Hero's Journey" that you like about it? Its a classic form of mythology. Star Wars took this old type of story and put in a futuristic setting.

You might be interested in the Japanese film The Hidden Fortress. Even Lucas himself says that it was a strong influence on the original movie.

If you're looking for something Space Opera-ish, I'm sad to say the best ones date from the 70s-early 80s. The more recent ones tend to focus on Mechas and that's not what you want.

I have to second Captain Harlock (should be obvious from my avatar), it feels very much like Star Wars. You could also try other works by the same author (MATSUMOTO Leiji) like Galaxy Express 999 or Cosmoship Yamato.

You should also check :

Cobra Another oldie about a space pirate. One of my favs when I was a kid. Less epic than Star Wars (no big battles in space) but still great SF/Adventure.

Towards the Terra A SF manga from the 70s, with aliens, spaceships, and strange powers.

If you don't mind anime then I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (this one is about war/politics though), Ulysses 31 and maybe Outlaw Star or the recent Space Dandy (more comedy/parody than action).

Seikai no Senki (Novel) might interest you, I'd recommend the novels or anime over the manga.

There was also a japanese TV show with marionettes (a la Thunderbirds) clearly inspired by Star Wars called X-Bomber. You might be lucky and find episodes on the net/E-bay.

More after looking at tags: Dirty Pair no Daibouken(i only care about the project Eden movie), Five Star Monogatari, Hi no Tori (half of it), Starship Troopers has 2 ok ova´s and Uchuu Senkan Yamato. Everyone should watch Kurosawa.
The new Star Wars comic(universe) by Marvel is a very good and canon.
