Male. For computer games that use 3-rd person view, I use only female characters. If I have to stare at a character for hours and hours, I prefer looking at sexy elven girl's ass and not at hairy orc's butt.

Well as I said before, I'm male and I always make male characters and always will.
It's been same in any RPG, MMORPG or Other Open World game which lets you choose your gender and it will always be same.
This poll is not a winner determiner type, rather a gender determiner one, so don't take it to your heart and be honest. ^^

I'm female and usually pick female, just because I always go through a stage where I have to make the character look like me. ^^ Although, it does come down to a few other factors as well. Like another poster said, I, too, really like pretty things, so if the male character is prettier than the female, I'm tempted to go with him (almost did this with Fire Emblem: Awakening and Rune Factory 4, and I almost always play as male!Robin in SSB ). If there's a marriage option, I will usually choose female as well (unless there's a slash option). If it's a game where you can play multiple characters, I will always have at least one of each (Animal Crossing, Sims, etc., and in the former, I often cross-dress my main character if I'm in the mood to play as the opposite gender). If it's a game where the clothing is (unfortunately) sex-segregated, then I like to give each gender a go (if the fated Pokemon Z ever materializes, I will be playing as the male character). The unfortunate thing for me is that I rarely replay a game on a new save file, so I don't always get a chance to play as the opposite gender I started as. I guess a game where you can give your character a sex change is ideal for me, hahaha!

> I'm male and I tend to make female characters
But it depends on the type/quality of the game.
Some games simply give female characters better looking armor so I pick female (Monster Hunter). Other times, (such as MMOs) certain races are gender specific (Mithra in FFXI or Elin in TERA for example).
But its not absolute. Female Taurens in WoW are (were?) hideous so I rolled a male. I also play as a male in the Fallout games because the changes in dialogue between genders is so shallow it ultimately comes across as more 'natural' when you're a male character.

I know that the mentality of gaming is an illusion, but what fun is gender choosing when you are not completely connected with your character? It is only then, that a poll like this would have true meaning.
The truth is, I get your point, but I think you are missing the true element of what gaming is about. It isn't only about realism or true connectivity. It's about imaginative exploration.
I can understand you want to experience having HUGE jiggly boobs & touching your vagina in the game; and yet, be a guy in real life. But because we haven't reached that stage yet, doesn't mean you have to give up on today's gaming.
Here is my mentality on the subject: I play "the games of today" in order to give myself game functionality experience (abilities, weapons, creatures, weaknesses, etc.). So that when the 100% perfected Virtual Reality is someday available, my virtual reality learning curve would be lessened due to how familiar I am with gaming in the first place.
I tend to play games that are most likely capable of being adapted into virtual reality when such things are possible. Games like Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Metroid, Halo, Warcraft, Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto, BioShock, The Last of Us, Batman Arkham Series, Portal, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Titanfall, Dragon Age, Far Cry, Star Wars, EA Sports Games, and the list goes on and on.
Playing these games keeps you up to date for what is to come when the ultimate challenge of Virtual Reality actually happens if we are still alive to witness such an achievement in Game History. Keep your head up and don't despair.
As for me, I'm female, and I'd go for a male character so I won't make other male characters feel uncomfortable or give me special treatment just because I'm a girl.
Even in Virtual Reality, as a female, I'd still pick a male gender.
That's the point of gaming, being someone you're not. I mean, what's there not to like?
It's him!!

And this is exactly why I, a male obviously, make female characters in games that allow it. (so pretty much just RPGs) I think part of the reason for me is that there are already loads of games where a male character is the hero, and it gets to be a bit boring to see gruff straight white men as the leading characters every damn time.
Also, sometimes the writing in the game will make characters express themselves differently to women, like bad guys underestimating my character because she's a woman. Which makes it all the sweeter to stab them with a sword, or bullets.

It depends. It's a game where I have complete control, I usually make someone that looks like myself which is a white male.
I personally don't care otherwise. If its a game I'm interested in, if its got a male, female, or both. I choose whatever.

I don't think I can answer this question with the answers provided. I'm male and I tend to make whatever kind of character seems to round out the party or fit the scenario better. I think I'm about 50/50 on this one. I've played more male characters, but that's because they were tourney characters, or inherited, etc.
If I'm GM and running a PC to fill out a small party, I'll frequently make it female because beginning players are majority male and I usually suggest that beginners not try to play a character too far from their own experience base for the sake of immersive roleplay.

I have to agree with senile_seinen . . . I'm female, and I make whichever one the story in my head fits best.
