Hey there!
I just noticed this when I was updating Akaiito. The manga 10 manbun no 1 is listed as a side-story which is not befitting anymore.

Do we have a definition for what is officially considered a side-story and what a spin-off?

In my opinion anything that's < or = 1 volume would be considerable as a side-story, while a story-line that has 1 or more volume of it's one would be a spin-off. Especially as the original series is no longer continued and the author introduced the "first chapter" of the new series as the extra of the last volume of Akaiito. By now 10 manbun no 1 should be close to 3 volumes on its own..

That question aside; Is there no easy way to switch the status from side-story to spin-off?

When I tried updating it for 10 manbun no 1 I didn't see any other solution than deleting the side-story one and doing it all over again, which is suboptimal...

I use Side Story for a canon "in between the pages" manga as Boku dake ga Inai Machi Gaiden. A Spin-Off is used by me for let´s say a non-canon 4-koma well... spin-Off.

No big difference but they link differently with a simple "Adapted From" for the spin-offs. That works out great for the manga based on a LN entries.

Yea, I'd say if it were only the one or two chapters in Akaiito, I'd also go with the side-story label, however considering the fact that author expressively closed the Akaiito story line and started the 10manbun no 1 one, I feel like it should really be labeled a spin-off. It's not a diversion storyline alongside the original one but a series that could for all it's worth be read as a series on its own. As far as I'm informed they either just published or are about to publish volume 3 in Japan and it's still on-going..
But that aside: Can one really not change the label from side-story to spin-off, without having to start a "new series" here? I only see the option to delete the side-story one and add a new spin-off one. Which is not ideal and could be improved on. Seems like something that could happen more often when authors decide to make a whole spin-off out of a tiny side-story they created at first..
