To suit my mood, usually.

Most often, I listen to 80s metal (affectionately referred to as "hair bands") because that's what I grew up with. Def Leppard is my favorite band, but there's also Poison, G'n'R, Dokken, Winger, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, etc.

But when the mood strikes I listen to nearly anything.

Listed in no particular order:
instrumental/score music from OSTs (second favorite genre)
j-pop/j-rock
bluegrass (but generally not "country")
choir/a capella
rap/hip hop
r&b/soul
electronica/techno
industrial/rave
pop/dance
speed/death metal (I'm in a really foul mood to listen to this.)
alternative/grunge
punk/ska
comedy/parody
contemporary/easy listening
jazz/blues
70s/disco
classical/renaissance
big band/swing
international (latin american/african/middle eastern/reggae/etc.)
religious subgenres (Gregorian chants/classical Latin hymns)
other (flamenco/ballroom/indigenous/etc.)

I remember back in 05 trying to get with a latina, I had to subject myself to reggaeton music.

I listen to anything that appeals to me. Usually, a particular band/artist attracts my attention, and then I become a regular fan because of their lyrics, composition or a unique sound.

Also a fan of fringe artists who have success based merely on talent, rather their public image alone.

Jazz music, especially featuring a lot of saxophone: total inspiration.

Classical music because I love the fine notes, and as a dancer, it appeals to me.

And soundtracks to musicals. If I can sing along, or if I'm moved by the story, then I fall in love with them.

I listen to J-music/K-music/Rock/ cause well it's frigin' amazing. They are so unique and their songs are mostly deeper than your average english song filled with love and/or sex like the second post said.
I don't even listen to my homecountry music [spanish] since I'm so engrossed with this type of music.. It's like the beat i was trying to find and i found it=D

currently listening to : Buck-Tick..never knew they sounded this good=D

Because ... ... ... good question. ^^ I like music which has power and which is unique. Like Pet Shop Boys, Queen, David Bowie, Placebo (the old songs), Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson, ... I think I love to listen to it because it feels like those people have put their souls into it. Maybe they didn't ... I don't know. But it's a nice thought. smile

Unfortunately you don't find music like that nowadays ... Somehow it all sounds the same ...

They inspire me.
They improve my mood, or suit it accordingly.
I appreciate the artists/bands' creative talent.

i listen to korean rap
because it feels hip and moving like its getting me pumped up
i also like it becuz it isn't as emotional or as sad as japanese music
its more about the rhythm and energy

i also listen to screamo for the same reason

i listen to other music becuz its simple and has good energy
i can't listen to emotional music, it gets boring
