Since I didn't see this here and I don't have an account with BU (down right now for me anyway), I thought I'd throw this out to test the waters.

Crunchyroll, hulu, joost and probably a few others are planning to stream subtitled TV Tokyo anime episodes a week after they air in Japan. If you subscribe to Crunchy roll, you can get it an hour after it airs.

Would you give up fansubs and scanlations for streamed content? Will quick, official, advertisement based releases dampen unofficial fan translations?

Edit: Messed up option three. Should have said register instead of subscribe. Had a brain fart. dead Then again, subscribe is a decent option.

Starting rant, ignore as you see fit.
Personally I have mixed feelings about the idea of streaming anime. I'm glad companies are finally using the now venerable idea of streaming anime and profiting through advertising. I've always said that the only chance scanlations and fansubs could be stymied is through such a scheme.

Not so thrilled with the idea of subscription fees. Don't like crunchyroll period. More than a little worried about official translations. Bad translations and censorship sucks.

Agree. I like fansubbed/ fan's translation more because they tend to become closer to the real thing. And sometimes they add explanatory notes if there are some confusing terms/situations.

@hiyoko_sachi

I'm not too concerned about slightly shody translations on fansubs compared to scans since my crappy japanese can pick up the gist of most conversations without subs anyway. If they are better than HK bootleg, then I'm fine... mostly. If the anime is uncut and remains uncut, then I may very well go for streaming.

Can't say the same for manga though. The idea of Card Captor Nikki or Card Captor Cherry still makes me reach for the tequila. Come to think of it, even seeing that in subtitles would make me abandon streaming.

Only if I don't have to pay.
I'm cheap like that.

So I'd use it, unless it's not available where I live, I don't want to see another Veoh being pulled off.

I voted only if you don't have to pay.

Because if there's payment involved there's no way hoséy biggrin
Payment is imo not for online digital stuff in general.

But that doesn't means I'd entirely give up on fansubs though...
If I feal like watching it whatever comes to me first will get my pick, obviously.

And streaming.. (is dowloading offcourse smile ) I hope the translations are good... Well they obviously will be accurate but I kinda hope they don't make them too childischly. Things like 'fuck', 'shit' and 'damn' will probably be replaced but let's hope that's all smile.

Also I'm wondering how it would affect certain groups... I can imagine that losing their 'main series' could cause a group to disband or go inactive, which would cause their 'minor series' to be discontinued as well.
But probably fansubs are gonna stay desired; I heard streaming fansubs will be one week later unless you pay? In that case it's like any other group; first fansub - first pick (for most of us anyway) cool

@HeavennevaeH
Yeah, the Veoh fiascos really surprised me. Not sure how the streaming distribution will work though. I'm guessing that the deal is for U.S. distribution only since Hulu and Joost is only available here. Don't know about crunchyroll though.

@Zacharias
I doubt I'll give up on the fan translations any time soon either. Most streaming sites still just don't have the resolution and I don't have the bandwidth to reliably watch high res video anyway. Having to d/l special programs in some cases for high res doesn't help matters either. Just because your paranoid and all that junk...

Yeah, same here...

I think I'll stick with fansubs...quality and bandwidth reasons...

Besides, somehow I can't really see them streaming shows I follow, like Ghost Hound or Natsume Yuujinchou...well except if it's Gonzo, but then it sucks by default...
