i find it surprising no one posted anything about the drama versions even though it's been so successful as a cdrama (Meteor Garden), jdrama (Hana Yori Dango) and now, a kdrama (Boys Before Flowers)! I'm ecstatic for the fact that this manga has been attempted to be adapted by all three genres of asian drama, aren't you?

but speaking of adaption, what are your likes and dislikes about a drama or the dramas in relation to the manga plot and why?
my rant: I've recently watched 2 eps of the korean version, and i thought the director did extremely well! Not only is his direction wonderful (shaky close ups, and the images he captures is just <3~) but he sticks to the plot so accurately!!
Spoiler (highlight to view)
From makino's first friend pissing off Domyoji (joon Pyo) to getting hit by eggs,
i could not think of any drama i've watched who stuck to the plot so much and i'm so glad... T^T BUT i had a few urks with their interp of Makino, or Jan Di. From watching 2 eps, rather than fighting off the bullying with that lovable fiery spirit of hers, Jan Di just seems to bully around Joon Pyo (Domyoji). i felt she had a level of cockiness and toughness more satisfying than the other two versions, but by the way things are going
Spoiler (highlight to view)
(Joon Pyo's already fallen for her by the second ep)
i don't know how her strong spirit against the actual bullying will ever show. but i'll just wait and see shy

My personal favorite is Hana Yori Dango (Japan Version) because the names is the same as in the manga so I know exactly what's going on. Like, when Sanjo Sakurako showed up, I knew EXACTLY what was going to happen but at the same time, it was different because of such a short season. They used almost all of the scenes in the manga but mixed it around and put them together in such a way that works. Ex. Domyouji losing his memory and getting lost in the snow.

Second would be Meteor Garden. It was quite long but it gave time for the characters to get to know one another and fall in love. Where as the other two versions, Domyouji fell in love by episode two, which was wayyyy to fast and a bit annoying.
Let's not even talk about season 2. D: As someone once said, "Why would I watch an entire season of Dao Ming Si loving someone else?"

Lastly, I pick Boys Before Flowers. I'm not really a fan of Korean drama and I have a background in the Japanese and Mandarin language so can basically understand what's going on even without subtitles. With Korean, I cannot. There's too much ear shrieking screams and talking with a mouth full of food scenes. They mixed the characters around to the point where I can't even tell who's who (ex. Mimasaka Akira and Nishikado Soujiro). I can somewhat understand this because there have been two other great versions of the same drama so they need something to make it different from the others and be successful in it's own way.
Still, I'm in love with the story of Hana Yori Dango so I will watch it all the way. biggrin

thanks for the detailed response! very informative laugh

UPDATE: as of now, i stopped at the 14the episode because the drama became so painfully cheesy. it was wonderful at first, there were so many cute scenes, but then the romance suddenly became so unbearably dramatized and inaccurate, ie. there's a scene where Makino is riding a white pony with Ryu, with cgi-ed bubbly sparkles and everything (srsly, no joke).

it was a let-down for me, makino's character never showed any kick-ass except toward Domyoji (she was just so helpless toward the bullying) and eventually turned into a whimpering stereotypical girl who always needed her prince. the drama was a downfall and imo, her character was ruined. it had so much potential though so i feel so sad... cry

meteor garden is by far my fav out of the diffrent drama versions
main girl is just so good looking[and she play the role awesome]
and the actors overall are far supperior
and belivable in thier roles
even the male actors look alot better in meteor garden
the j version is plagued by bad actors who...i guess allways overact

kdrama is usually so overthetop lovywovy that i cant stand it
so i havet tried it...yet

Just curious... I've watched Meteor Garden (the first one), and uhmmm... how closely does it follow the manga? And where did the first season stop in terms of manga chapter/volume?
