Ai Yazawa attended Osaka Mode Gakuen, a fashion-oriented vocational school, but did not complete her studies there. She debuted with "Ano Natsu" in 1985, on Ribon Original (Early Spring issue).

In 2002, she won the Shogakukan Manga Award for "Nana" in the Girls' (shoujo) manga category.

Her "Yazawa" pen name comes from Japanese singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan.

In 2009, Yazawa put "Nana" on indefinite hiatus after she contracted a serious illness. After she got out of the hospital in 2010, she admitted in a statement that she wasn’t sure if she would ever return to do manga work due to health reasons. Since 2016, she has expressed interest in eventually resuming "Nana".

In January 2013, she did her first manga work in 3 years, a two-page special celebrating her 100th "Yazawa’s Island" column for Cookie magazine featuring Junko’s Room. Yazawa also sporadically does illustration work for multimedia collaborations and Cookie’s "Nana" furoku goodies.

She is good friends with OBANA Miho, YOSHIZUMI Wataru, MIZUSAWA Megumi, and MAKI Youko.
