New Poll - Starting Age
This week's poll by rallwka is about the age you started reading manga. As long as you remember, this one should be easy!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: If a publisher were to adopt a model where you pay a monthly subscription (say ~$10 USD) in order to read their entire library of translated manga via a digital device, would you subscribe?
Choices:
Yes - votes: 6400 (57.6%)
No - votes: 4713 (42.4%)
There were 11113 total votes.
The poll ended: March 15th 2013

There's so many factors associated with this (like how large the library of series would be), so don't expect this poll to be a market analysis of any sort. In other news, JManga is closing its retail and viewing services

Does this include anime?
I've started with Dragonball and Pokémon around the age of 10 or 11.
But for manga it took some time until I was around 18-19 (we don't have much manga in my country, it took some time until I found it on the Internetz). wink

Same here, I've been into cartoons & anime for as long as I can remember (anything from Tom & Jerry to Marvel and anime), but manga are hard to come by here, so my first encounter was on the internet. Unless Disney's Witch magazine counts as manga o.o

I started with pokemon (series and gameboy games) when I was 8-9 years old, but in my opinion that doesn't count, as I wasn't aware of it being anime.

I bought my first 3 manga volumes when I was around 13 years old; One Piece, D.N. Angel and Ranma 1/2. Within a week I'd bought another ten volumes, and then I was hooked.

I remember it well. I stumbled across a random manga, found a link to OneManga on that site and I've never looked back since.

While this is an interesting question, I would like to see a question about how long ago somebody started reading manga. For instance, if the majority of the site's users are <=18 years old, then the vast majority of first time manga experiences is going to when people were <=18 years old. I'd like to see if new people are starting to pickup manga recently (and if there were some "manga boom"), or if the majority of users are long-time readers and if new users aren't coming into the genre. That will likely tell a good picture of what to expect in the future.

I started reading manga when I was really young. But at that time, i didn't know it was manga. I just thought of it as normal comics with nice art. Plus, I only read it when I have nothing to do. Then, I stopped reading it b'coz I didn't find it giving me any benefits and it was also a waste of time.

But, when I was 15, I started to read it again and this time, I went GAGA for it. It is my biggest hobby that I ever had in my life. So, I put 14-18 as my option because that was the time when I was seriously reading manga.

Duude, I remember I started reading manga during 5th or 6th grade!!
The boys from my class brought in Shonen Jump when it first came out and I was hooked!
Not only that, I think my first manga series might have been Initial D? Again, I remember the boys bringing it in and I had to like beg this one guy to let me read the next volume lol. I was already an addict then and still is 10 years later.
First exposure though? Probably Sailor Moon or Doreamon or Pokemon? Then there was that Adult Swim on Cartoon Network back in the days... mmm good times.

The descriptions suck. Which countries have middle school from 10 to 14? Not very many, I imagine. And 22 to 30 a young adult? I'd say at latest when you get to 22 and over you can drop the "young" off.

As for the question: pretty much from when I learned to read, so the first answer.

In 6th or 7th grade.
The Dragonball anime was very popular among the boys of our class and before long, we were buying and exchanging the manga volumes until we had all of them.

It all started with One Piece. <3 I guess it was fifth grade, I got it from my friends, as I can remember.

anime started earlier, somewhere in primary school with Pokemon and One Piece (and Yu-Gi-Oh :rolleyessmile , as I always complain there's not that much different manga or anime in my country but it's getting better.

I started when I was 11 years with Shugo Chara because my friend recommended it (she started reading manga about half a year earlier). For a while I liked only Shugo Chara and tought that I would never find a better. A while after that I found the anime and started watching it. After I had watched it I accidentaly found Tokyo mew mew. That is when I realized that there are many similar and better animes and mangas ^_^
(Sorry!!! my english is not that good!!! >_<)

I watched Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited away" when I was seven and had a giant poster of it in my room. Later, when I was nine, I moved to Spain, meaning there was Doraemon on TV. I also loved Inuyasha and a few other anime when I was 11-12, but the first manga I ever picked up (also of Inuyasha) was when I was 11. I sticked to Rumiko Takahashi's work until, one day when I went to buy the next number, the manga shop owner told me he didn't have it and recomended Naruto. That's where it all started...

I remember my friend bringing in the first issue of the American version of Shonen Jump, and my mind being blown over the fact there were "anime comics." The same friend also quickly exposed me to the scanlation community. Man, I miss Toriyama's World and SnoopyCool....
