New Poll - Completed Series
This week's poll is the brainchild of our member kelly123456000. How many series do you think that you've completed in your entire life? For the purposes of our poll, let's say that the series itself must be completed (so no putting Kochikame on that list). Oneshots are fine, but doujinshi don't count. (Here at MangaUpdates, we consider any non-official work that is based on an official series as a doujinshi. If it's original, it's a oneshot). Well, I guess if you read a lot of oneshots, then your numbers will naturally be a lot higher. Just an estimate is fine!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Opinion of animals or small creatures that function as the pet of the manga's main character
Choices:
They're so cute! - votes: 2001 (18%)
Love them - votes: 781 (7%)
I'm okay with them - votes: 2345 (21.1%)
They're alright as long as they serve a functional purpose - votes: 3635 (32.7%)
Totally unnecessary to include them - votes: 877 (7.9%)
Could care less - votes: 1464 (13.2%)
There were 11103 total votes.
The poll ended: November 16th 2013

More or less don't care... Not too many haters or lovers

I picked 500-700. Added all the mangas in my complete lists got 633. I know some are missing, but not enough to go to the 700-1000 bracket.

I'm a sucker for oneshots, I added together the number of them and it's 1000+ easily bigrazz

They do add up don't they? I selected 100-300 completed, then I checked out my complete list, 1298... Doh!
I need to get a life.

I'm at 500-700, not counting hentai. If I include hentai - and those who read hentai should know it's full of oneshots - the number of series I have completed is at least doubled, easily exceeding 1000.

And this number is just limited to series that are in MU's database.

thread

» forgottenone666 on November 16th, 2013, 2:39am

I went with 1,000+ based on the fact that I've read at least 2,000-3,000 different manga and have finished a good chunk of that. I've been reading manga for a long time so this isn't surprising in the least.

I fail to see the logic behind counting oneshots but not counting doujinshi.
Both establish their story for exactly that one chapter, with doujinshi being written/drawn by fans and oneshots having been published in a manga magazine.
Also, doujinshi =! hentai, for that matter.
There are amazing non-H doujinshi.
There are hentai doujinshi where the H is just the subplot, while retaining a very solid storyline topping many average mangas.
There are hentai mangas where the above also applies, or hentai mangas that have an incredibly fun to read storyline.

Well according to my complete list, which is separated from my "fan" doujinshi list, I've completed 800± (I would also still consider my list incomplete). Though a majority of what I've completed would be single volumes. Series might be something more like 400± I'm really unsure, maybe it's more.

Also although I'm pretty sure I read more series than one-shots, I still have to agree with connerity, why are one-shots fine but not doujin? Either exclude or include both, not one or the other. If this is a matter of "original work" not all doujin are fan works based off of an original series (though I'll agree that a huge majority is). Now if I take your advise and include these original doujin as one-shots, fine, but I still wouldn't consider one-shots and single volumes as a series?

So my conclusion is I have no idea!!! XD

This poll gives a wrong idea.
Their is a difference in people that read a lot of long series (50+ volumes) or people that read a lot of short stuff (One-shots or 1 volume series).

I'm close to 500, but the amount of series I'd tried out is over 5000 (I'm not in the mood to count all my lists.

I basically don't continue to read something that is bad, as this is just a waste of time. cool

Indeed I fail to do this poll.

What about series that aren't finished but you caught up with?

Also do raw count?

As I said, I fail to do this poll properly.

Indeed what about unfinished series, or series that are dropped by the groups because of a bad ending (or rushed end).

I think raws would only count if you can actually read the language. For me, just skimming for the images wouldn't count as having finished it.

Also, caught up =/= finished in my book. The actual series has to be completed in order for you to have finished it.

thread

» tsuto on November 16th, 2013, 3:42am

According to my complete series' list it's around 500. It has been a while since I updated my lists though, and not reading a lot lately either.

thread

» tactics on November 16th, 2013, 4:26am

Apparently I'm nearing 400 according to my lists. That doesn't include hentai, but that wouldn't make a significant change anyway, even if I did count it. (I tend to read hentai with a few volumes, not just the random oneshots)

If the doujin did count though, according to my list, it adds another ~200, but that's just the ones I've managed to find/remember to add. Pretty sure I've probably hit 700+ when it comes to doujins lol.

So yeah, I'm around the 300-500 mark at the moment. Probably wont go up anytime soon as I'm not reading as much as I used to, nor am I bothering to go through my swamp of a wishlist lol.

I've been reading manga for about 7 years now and I've probably read over 100 series, but I usually read really long mangas so it's really hard to estimate how many. And I'm just too LAZY to update my lists xp. Never really had an interest in oneshots

thread

» KaoriNite on November 16th, 2013, 5:01am

According to my complete list, which is fairly accurate, I have completed around 1500. Actually not sure how accurate that number is since I don't bother to include the hentai I read.

But I think this high number is due to the fact that my favorite genre is yaoi, where the average series is only one volume. And its also due to the fact that I try to only read completed series rather than ongoing ones. So my reading list only has 27 series listed.

I also don't understand not counting DJs. I'm not sure of the definition of DJs, but doesn't this just mean that it hasn't been released through an official publisher? I've read DJs that are original, multi-chapter stories by actual mangaka. For whatever reason decided to release the manga on their own. Why shouldn't series like this be included? Well actually I don't see the problem with including all DJs.

thread

» auriga on November 16th, 2013, 6:15pm

MU's definition of doujinshi is a self-published derivative work; this means original stories that are self-published are not considered doujins - at least, here in MU.

Good thing I separate the oneshots I read. Close to 300 now though some of them are anthologies and short series. To those wondering, for the sake of simplicity, it'd be a good idea to just count those that you've actually finished. So ignore unfinished (including hiatus) and still publishing series, but count complete axed series (only if you finished it though).

Oh oops, misread the poll.Iincluding oneshots I just surpassed the 300 mark

thread

» asdfffdsa on November 16th, 2013, 5:50am

Very few. Most authors milk a series until it's stale, but I guess that's an unfortunate consequence of publisher control and the need to make a living off of one's work. I expect quality will be a lot better when technology advances to a point where people can pursue their passions without the fear of next month's rent (not like people are motivated to go into this business by money or fame).

And I would be tempted to say that groups also drop series too often, but nine times out of ten the series gets stale before they are dropped anyway.

thread

» RoxFlowz on November 16th, 2013, 7:22am

Probably around 200, I don't add all series I've read to my complete list. I'd probably reach around 500 if series I've dropped would count as well.

Edit: Ok, adding all the 1 volume stuff and counting anthologies I guess I'd reach about 1000. Too lazy to add that stuff to my list though dead

I've read more or less 600, mostly oneshots. Series like Nisekoi that started as oneshot then continued on as a series, I put them in my complete list when I don't like the series continuation.

im very zealous in updating all the stuff i read, i update the chapters and when i finished i will make sure to put the rating that i really believe the manga should have. if i really feel for the manga i will put in review. except for the throwaway hentai or shotacon too vile to put in here.

right now i have 1028 in my completed list.

I have 547 in my complete list (I have a separate list for doujinshi, so my complete list only counts manga and oneshots). That number would probably double if I incorporated all the manga I'm in the process of reading. laugh

230 full non-hentai multi-volume series(3+ volumes each).
I don't count oneshots/one volume series, as there is always a question of how to count anthologies, especially by the same author - as one or as twenty series? And what if they are connected by a common character, etc.?

Well, around 825 according to my lists, so I'm still in the second to last category

+54 on my list of mangas I hated but completed anyway (most likely because what I hated was around the end, or because it was so bad I just had to keep reading) which is not public...

That makes a lot of time spent reading mangas...

I don't usually read oneshots or shorter series, so most of the series that I have read have been 2+ volumes, but i can estimate that I have definitely read somewhere between100-300 complete series. I can confidently say that if we were talking about series read in general, complete or incomplete, that number would be A LOT higher XD

This is when my "Complete list" here in mangaupdates becomes useful lol. Seriously, when you have one it's so simple to keep track of how many you've finished. Mine is in the 500-700 range, but it's actually almost 700 already. Can't wait to add more to the list!

thread

» pyonk on November 18th, 2013, 10:51pm

535 according to my list. But the actual number must be more than 700 because there are a lot of series I read before join MU. For someone who read manga since 3rd grade of elementary school, I suspect it is between 700-800.

thread

» crazyboutcute on November 20th, 2013, 6:05pm

Probably around 100, if I had to estimate. That's for "completed" series, as per the poll's specifications. I have very, very little patience for bad writing and cliches, so my number of dropped series far surpasses my completed ones. laugh
