Can't speak for VIZ or how the OPM releases compare, but since it has derailed to a general "official vs scanlations"...
Of course scanlations can be better than official translations, there's no reason they can't be. That said, a lot of scanlations are not as good as peop...

The scanlation scene wouldn't survive if everyone sniped everyone else. Often the following happens:
1. Group 1 scanlates series
2. Group 2 snipes series with faster but worse releases
3. They compete for a while
4. Group 1 drops series
5. Group 2 continues for a short time

Totally fine, they do it for free after all. No obligations. As people said, it gives a series some exposure so other groups might pick it up. Happened to the title I scanlated the first 3 chapters of as well.
