Interesting idea. Terrible execution.

I loved the idea when I heard it. One of my favorite book series ever is Discworld and this is exactly the sort of premise you could see for a story there so I was really excited to start reading it. Then I started reading it and it was not particularly funny: Most of the comedy comes from them taking fantasy or historical concepts extra-seriously but the manner in which this is executed doesn't really come off as funny.

An example of a joke that really fails for me from chapter 1 is someone asking for a "carriage driving license" in a manner similar to how people in the real world would ask for a drivers license as identification. But historically demanding people have a license to be allowed to drive a carriage is stupid and was not normal anywhere. Maybe it's just not my type of humor but I found myself going multiple chapters between jokes that actually landed.

Outside of the comedy the rest of the manga is painfully average, nothing special about the characters (either good or bad), setting suffers constantly from being rewritten for attempts at comedy, the art is below average but there are almost no scenes that would benefit that much from being drawn much better either.

Maybe I'm being too harsh on this because it was sold to me under the pretense of being a "smart comedy" and it is very rarely smart and the comedy doesn't land very often. There's still some smart and funny chapters in there but they are the exception (at least in the first 3 volumes which is all I've read) .

Overall if you find the concept potentially funny I say check out the book "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett before you consider touching this series at all. If you're still hungry for more stuff with this concept and don't mind the fact that the comedy in this series is pretty poorly thought out then maybe give it a try, but don't expect this to be anywhere near as good as it's rated.

I just LOVE dungeon and dragons type of manga, but it's really fun to read something that is based on such a world without needing the characters to save it! It's kinda boring reading about fighting all the time so something that is more based on history with characters never deemed to be 'special' is much more entertaining. The art is not polished but still charming. Comedic and educational!

I like this manga a lot and would recommend it to people who like funny fantasy based in interesting historical anecdotes/quirks. The art style is a little atypical but I think the content is interesting and the mangaka’s afterwords always go into a bit more detail.
