At first, Yamashita thinks that being attracted to the same sex is normal behavior for boys at the age of 17 - a stage that everyone grows out of. Although this is a romance it's not like most other yaoi mangas. At first I was disappointed because I was expecting fluff and sweet romance (more like I wanted that). After reading it though how ever I was pleased. It's more about how these boys want love (Referring to manic love too) and how they deal with friendship. Kinda. It's a good, more serious read. Don't expect sweet words, fluff, and any definite conclusion.

I really don't know which I like more, this story or the prequel Manic Love. Manic Love is too... happy go lucky for my taste so I'd go with this one. I've read a lot of reviews for Fake Fur & there seems to be a theme, a similarity, to all of them. They've all mentioned the "moodiness" of Fake Fur, a sad, forlorn feeling throughout the manga. There is not one single weak character here (likewise for Manic Love); each one can hold his own. At the end, even though it sort of ended "happily," it was still "sad." The sadness, the loneliness, is still there, that "moodiness" still lingers.

Like others have already said before me, the ending really makes an impact. I teared up over it, not because it was sad, but because it was beautiful...like a ray of hope for someone struggling so hard to find love.

The relationship between Yamashita and Kubo was also sweetly portrayed; you can really see that they care about each other, and it was almost painful to read about their time together because you know that it wouldn't last. I felt really sad with the way things turned out for them, and I kept hoping that the two of them would find each other again, but this story is, unlike most yaoi manga, cruelly realistic.

I agree with lore- the ending was what made me go from "oh, I really like this" to "wow, this is beautiful". Even if you don't like shounen-ai/yaoi particularly, you shouldn't miss this book (:

Not a sad ending!

At least, my interpretation of the ending is that it isn't sad. In fact, one of the most gorgeous, moving moments in any manga I've read happens in Fake Fur. If you can, read "Love Control" (all English titles) by the same Mangaka first. I think reading them in that order gives the best emotional payoff in Fake Fur.
