This series defies a lot of the elements common to shoujo--it's not some painfully drawn out 30-volume monstrosity where the couple are barely even dating by the end; the heroine isn't a delicate, wimpy weakling who every single male within a thousand mile radius falls inexplicably and madly in love with; and the male lead, for all that Haruna may love him, isn't some sex god or paragon of virtue (nor is he a complete jerk who the heroine stays with for inexplicable reasons, either). It's pretty realistic for a manga, hysterically funny (and really well-drawn), and manages to make the genre of shoujo completely, genuinely enjoyable in ways few other shoujo can. I'm frankly shocked people would actually dislike this series; clearly they have not read enough other works in this genre to know just how head and shoulders Koukou Debut (and pretty much all of Kahawara Kazune's works) stands above them.

If you're tired of the same-old, same-old shoujo staples of love triangles and taking 300 chapters to get the couple together and ludicrously pretty and perfect people having shallow relationship wangst and wilting flower Mary Sue heroines, Koukou Debut is for you for pretty much ignoring aaaallllll of that and telling quite an original story and in a very funny fashion.

And Yoh is just awesome biggrin Plus, a new volume just came out, and the series is getting a movie and a cell phone drama spin-off, so if you get into the series now, there's lots of new media coming your way~

Simply Awesome

For quite some time, i kept on running on this manga but I never actually tried to read it, well, i did read it but only the first 5 pages and dropped it. Yesterday, I bumped into this manga again and i've thought of reading it and try out some few chapters. I dont know what had happened but it got me hooked. Like seriously, i wanted to finish it with one sitting.

Lots of stories are going around in this manga. Every character had their spot; some parts are boring some parts aren't that bad. I just find it boring because of too much school life stories, like its already dragging too long but nonetheless, this manga was something to read.

Haruna is just as stupid as ever but Yoh, i must say, he's the type of guy that every girl is dreaming about. I love it how he made Haruna feel secured in their relationship altho there were issues to settle.Their love for each other grew in the long run and i think its something to be happy about.

I've liked this manga. I dont care about Haruna's stupidity because, that's what makes Yoh to say his true feelings and vice versa, for Haruna she's trying to see her life/love in a more mature perspective way, i believe thats what the mangaka is trying to imply. Not just the heroine's stupidity and all.

i've read some of the comments and don't really know why ppl hated this manga. yeah, i have to admit that the start of the manga wasn't with a good reason: a girl tries to get BF. but as the flow, the story is really okay.

the lead male, Yoh, is a good guy, he's actually stiff and easily gets shy but he's very caring and a bit childish too, which makes him very cute and adorable. and for the girl, she's... yeah, very embrassing and a bit too loud, but she's strong (for real), doesn't cry much as the story goes on and sometimes she does make me surprised.

i practically am not a shoujo fan, after a long time of reading shoujo mangas and finding it's very boring with lots in the same/easy-to-guess motif, i almost gave up on shoujo and have decided to stick with yaoi/shounen-ai only : ))))).

but this read is refeshing, and although i was wondering at first that: if these two be a couple at the very start of the story, what would happen then to make this one 13 volumes long? and yeah, i'm very satisfied with the plot, because the author didn't waste her paper at all. this couple keeps getting cuter and cuter, and Yoh does get changed because of his GF.

the cracked jokes are very funny too, you can't help smiling : ). i think sensei made a good work, and it's a very worth of your time.

I actually liked this shoujo (I think?). I do believe that just after the main couple gets together the story becomes a little dragged. I had to stop reading for some months untill I felt like reading it again. And then, the story just slides away and gets so fast some points of the plot end before they begin (really, the 3 kouhai that just disaspear forever and just go back for no good reason).
But I don't think that some other people are complainig are that bad. For exemple, the main character being so obsessed about how looks. When everything starts she doesn't know what realy love but sure as hell want to try it out. So, she just reads teen mags to know what she has to do for love to spring out in her life, and based on those mags, she thinks that it all resumes to getting picked up (which I personally consider nonsense, but there ARE some girls that do believe in that sort of thing..). What I think is irritating thing about Haruna it's that throught the volumes she's just shown as a girlfriend. Her entire life becomes her relationship and there's no futher develepmont of the character. And eventhought Yoh has hes breakthroughts, it just really shallow ~~~
In the end, there seams like there's a lot of stuff missing but since the whole story is so shallow the entire time it doesn't make that much difference... The whole reason why you keep reading is the lightheartedness of the story.

I am boy and i don't really like fluffy romances stories - BUT! This manga is one of best i've ever read, even though it doesn't have much of story it left me a big impression. After i finished reading it, i kept thinking about the manga. The manga wouldn't go off my head, i had to keep thinking about the manga for like 1 week. And after finishing i was desperately looking for similar manga to make myself think about something else. I recommend it, just sad about manga, that there's no sequel

THE BEST....at first

I've never encountered a character like Haruna--optimistic and a bit naive, but not ridiculously stupid. I like her "Try my best!" motto~ it shows that she does more than merely sit there, helplessly crying about no love and stuff. (Like other shoujo manga characters...no offense.)

The plot was original. Nothing repeated pointlessly a gazillion times.

And so, I'm rating the plot and characters up to volume 6. I began volume 7+ and it's totally absurd. Yoh starts mooching guys?? I skipped to the ending and why does Yoh look like he gained 50 pounds? (JUST to his cheeks!? o-O) He looks like he's balding too... what happened to his thick hair?
The plot turned crazy.... And I'm not sure if I'm ever gonna read past vol6. :/ At least the beginning was really good! smile

This series was really funny + wahhh so romantic! They get together surprisingly early and its much more about their relationship than any actual coaching. This is both good and bad because while it doesn't drag out the willtheywon'tthey stage like other shoujos, there were moments where they got really boring as a couple. Scratch that, Yoh is boring, Haruna is HILARIOUS. She's your standard never give up no matter what type heroine but added bonus is she's super awkward and quite strong (her boyfriend-like behaviour towards Yoh and other girls is pretty funny). The only negative is her blind loyalty/love for Yoh and the fact that she's so insecure about their love. If it was anyone other than Yoh they would have gotten tired and dumped her already. But Yoh's surprisingly a good guy.

I really enjoyed reading this. Definitely recommended for people who like reading about pure/sweet romances!

If you read this really fast like 4 to 5 volumes within 1 to 2 hours and you like straight-forward manga, then this title might be for you.

Otherwise, it's a bit "empty" and rather predictable.

Furthermore, Yoh is so quiet, it's almost like he's a mute and Haruna spends so much time talking, it gets a tad annoying. In reality, such couples do exist but on paper, do you really want to read about this? Thus, this somehow gives me the feeling that Haruna is more of a person who loves the sound of her own voice than someone who truly enjoys entertaining the others around her or even a person who values the company of others. In the end, although bits and pieces of her characters were interesting like her upbeat personality and determination to persevere, she came out as a little flat and one-dimensional because of Yoh's behaviour towards her and how too much of the conversation centered around her.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Furthermore it was a bit entertaining to read about Yoh detecting Haruna's thoughts but it got old very fast because the mangaka kept reusing that part of his character. And then, about the other characters: they were too straight-forward also. It's fine if one to two characters are blunt and straight-forward but almost the entire cast is, which deprives the manga of character interaction when the plot itself is so straight-forward.

Lastly, the pages are filled with quite a bit of "near-empty" space and scenes which drag for too many pages.

Anyways, if I wanted to read or experience a one-sided monologue, then I'd have written up my script or started talking to myself everyday.
