SHOUTOUT TO MY FELLOW #teamSensei!!! THIS IS PROBABLY THE FIRST MANGA THAT BROKE MY HEART!!!! I WON'T RATE THIS BC I LOOOOVE THE STORY AND THE ART BUT I HATE THE ENDING SO MUCH I JUST CAN'T!!! Sure, Mamura is a great guy, but Sensei is too!!!
tho sensei is partly at fault here. He could've just asked Suzu to wait until she gets to be an adult or something
yea yea Mamura is a great guy, but SENSEI!!!!!!

If you want a happy perfect (well, not happy but logical) ending stop in the middle. The rest is just ... duh NB SPOILERS

I came across the art from the manga on pinterest and got interest, so, I found it and started to read.
Well, what can I say?
First of all, beware: there is a teacher-student pairing so, if you don't tolerate it don't read it at all. I personally hate when this trope is used in manga 'cause... well, it's not what I approve and I don't find it romantic when a 20-something guy fell for a teenage girl ESPECIALLY when he is her teacher. It just shouldn't happen, ok?
But this manga is something else if we're talking about this particular storyline. I can really relate to Shishio-sensei and Suzume: what started as a good friendship ended up as a sympathy and a feeling that hurts them both.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Suzume is hurt because it's obviously her first love and she's confused, moreover she understands that they cannot possibly be in a relationship. And Shishio-sensei,well, he fell in love with a child even worse - with his student and he feels pretty bad about it. I think one of the best moments in manga when he looks at her and thinks: we are from different universe. It really speaks well for him: he gets that it's a crush but also understands that it will not lead anywhere. And I must admit he behaves decently, well, yeah, I don't like how he grabbed her sometimes to hug (just a couple of times) or to take someplace to talk but other than that (THANKS GOD) he doesn't do anything improper, they just hold hands couple of times that's all and I cannot express how much I'm happy about it.[
I personally don't advice you to read pass their breakup (oops, SPOILER, but let's be honest it was the only way to handle it) because it ended just perfect and the rest of manga, well... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I read it till the very end but honestly the rest of the story is just not good and plain and boring and there is no decent explanation of this deep love Suzume and Mamura sharing in the end - their relationships had no development whatsoever.
Moreover, I liked Mamura at the beginning, I knew it would be a love triange here so I thought: it's a good idea for them to be together, 'cause they are same age, interests, degree of maturity and all, what can go wrong? Well...
EVERYTHING. ≧△≦ Mamura is a d*%"head, really, he's a little abuser and even it implies that he supports Suzume all the time while she's in pain but... no, not really (he hugged her after she got rejected once and he did pretty much nothing after she got her heart broken. Oh, yeah he gave her his scarf pffft) Moreover, he's very rude towards her all the time, even when they become friends he still acts very uncaring and call weak and stupind, even when he confessed to her he called her an idiot><, he hits her forehead (not hard but still it's an abuse) and do it reguraly with no reason, screams at her and ignores her opinion etc. This is nowhere near the romantic love story I expected, even the last page was awful (SPOILER ALERT: when Mamura is going to propose her he thinks smth like "I have to make a lame speach and I will never accept "no" for an answer from you, idiot" - he neglects her real feelings and obviosly he's not very fond of being romantic with her).
Secondly, their love (Mamura and Suzume) stars really strange, first they pretend to be couple, then he confesses (again), then they are a couple for real blah blah and there is a strange twist when at one moment Suzume is talking to her friend about how she felt - that she's confused and she doesn't know if her appreciation of Mamura is as a friendship or romantic feeling and in just in a moment she's rushing towards Mamura's house to ask him out (WTF?!). And again, I can relate to it: she likes his company (althought he's a d*&%) and want to spend more time with him but where all those feels and emotions that we see in the end of manga are came from? Where? They had a couple of dates, he screamed at her in front of the aquarium, then dropped a toy on Suzume's head (soo, soo romantic (not really), they went to a trip on vacation... sooo? Once again why are they so in love? When did she start feeling it? When did she finally recovered from the pain her previous love gave her? (Well, there is this moment in a manga actually but it's not very conviencing) It's like there is A LOT missing in the plot and the ending is just duuuuh - why did mangaka need to make this strange side story about Shishio 6 years later (SPOILER! he meets a girl living next to him and they talk a couple of times and it ends just in the middle of the conversation! If you really wanted to make it clear that he started something new (yeah, just six years later and he has "sad eyes" from that very love story with Suzume. *rolls eyes* it looks even more stupid comparing with how little time Suzume needed to start a new love, oh, i'm sorry A NEW EVERLASTING ROMANTIC TRUE LOVE (=_=) [/spoiler]
Well, anyway... As you see the plot is not bad (it's not good either, it's just usual shoujo manga, you know) and the storylines and love triangles are just fine, and I even think the student-teacher love story wasn't that bad (I still don't approve but at least it was realistic: confusing, uneasy and inappropriate and ended accordingly, and yeah, you still can sympathize with both Suzume and Shishio even if you think that those kind of relationships shouldn't exist). But the second part of the manga is just not worth of your time.

BTW, there are a lot of really forced twists and coincidences (in fact, the whole Suzume-Shishio storyline is a conjuncture): Suzume meets either her teacher or Mamura in huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge Tokyo all the time no matter where she goes: to New Year's Festival or to a temple etc, needless to say they bump into each other in school all the time, it looks fine at first but in the end it becomes really annoying and unnatural and sabotages the whole story.

what a mess...

things i liked:
[+] art (god, the guys are gorgeous in this and the mixed friend? she was so cute. too bad we only saw her in different clothes like... three times....)
[+] shishio getting flustered all the time
[+] suzuzme being straight-forward, quirky, simply different from typical lead girls (in the beginning, at least)
[+] mamura not holding back when confronting shishio

things i didn't like:
[-] story is a literal mess. it feels like the mangaka didn't know what the hell she was going to choose until maybe the three last chapters and even then so much of the drama was so unnecessary (did suzume really have to go back?? did she have to make mamura feel insecure before leavingconfused couldn't she tell him what was going on rather than make him feel miserableconfused?)
[-] yuyuka kind of just falling back into the shadows even when she's constantly the one putting suzume back on track. really wished we could see her relationship develop as well as her personality flourish a little more.
[-] suzume is far too clueless in some ways; i felt it was a little much at times.
[-] all the shy stuff about kissing, etc. suzume seemed more straight-forward in the sense that if she wanted to kiss someone, she would do it, so it was a little disappointing that she would freeze up or do nothing when she clearly liked the guy. like, he's not reaching for her hand? well, who cares, she just reaches out for it anyway! i honestly expected that all the time lol

overall, the manga was pretty good, though i wouldn't re-read it.

since suzume wasn't really a concrete character and went too soft for my liking, i liked shishio's character the most. he seemed more thought out than mamura and had some depth to his thoughts, emotions, and mistakes. mamura's biggest flaw as a character was the whole "she's different from other girls" nonsense. if i had a dollar for every time that's "the reason i love her" given.....

it sucked that shishio was a grown man, doing things that are expected of him, but when he decides "fuck it, i'm doing what i want and taking on the consequences for it," there's so much unnecessary drama? and although i loved the concept of mamura, shishio was more appealing in more ways than one (but, hey, i have a type and shishio fits into it 100%). still, the ending is alright and i understand why it would be done this way. was just too rose-colored for me.

eh, overall, it was good enough to keep reading, even if it was mostly because i liked the art a lot lol

I liked this series because the ending wasn't so darn cliche, and despite the number of volumes it wasn't too dragged out or wishy washy, I liked the side couples and character development, at least the ending proved she grew up and had her mind set on a happier relationship, as well as that it shows the realism aspects of the story because most shoujo manga you know damn well who the heroine will choose from the first chapter

In general, shoujo with little to offer besides romance aren't exactly my cup of tea. This manga would probably come under that category, and a reader with my tastes wouldn't find it spectacular either. But I won't call it bad, because I did have the motivation to finish it after I started. When I did finish it, however, it didn't leave much of an impact on me. In all, the story and the whole love triangle plot was 'meh' - not boring, but bland. I was most disappointed by the protagonist - she started out as a funny interesting character. It really bugged me that she would only search her 'daytime shooting star's in a romance. She was initially presented as somehow different than a typical heroine, but 78 chapters later I could barely find any words, other than nice, to describe her. The whole process of falling in love, as some said below, seemed superficial, which made it worse. Contrary to many though, I like the ending. It was confusing and stupid, but I liked Mamura (visually speaking, he's pretty much my type). Shishio was difficult to understand, but definitely more interesting than the girl.
The art is quite pretty.

It seems like some people liked the start but not the end. For me, it would be the opposite.

I liked the ending. By that, I mean that not only the plot was good at the end, but the storytelling was also good. I could understand the feelings and actions of the characters at a deeper level. Perhaps it was due to the author improving on her storytelling skills.

However, the beginning of the story was rather bland. The plot itself was alright, but the way the story was presented made it difficult for me to connect to the characters. Perhaps the thing I found lacking for the first half of the story was that the process of falling in love wasn't portrayed as well as it could have been. I felt that it lacked depth and felt rather superficial SPOILER ALERT(i.e.: girl falls for her teacher, teacher falls for her - but how? It seems like he just fell for her. It was rather abrupt).

Even the middle part of the story was just mediocre - quite typical. It was interesting, but it was not outstanding enough to make me feel really excited. When I read the little developments in the middle, it's more like "oh, is that so?" kind of feeling, not like "What?! Why did that happen? That's really good!" nor did it make me think along the lines of "that's some really good character development!" because the characters developed the way most do in these kinds of stories (EXCEPT the main girl character at the ENDING ONLY, which is why I like it). This part that I like is AFTER she made her final decision (the plot twist). The story flowed pretty well after the big suspense. However, BEFORE that, it was underdeveloped - especially how she arrived at her final decision. I think this is what some readers disliked, which made the rest of the beautiful ending unenjoyable for them.

If it wasn't for the ending, this manga would be a 7/10 , but because of the ending, it deserves a 7.8/10.
Amusingly, it feels like the opposite of Ao Haru Ride, which had a good beginning in terms of storytelling quality.

Definitely worth to read manga. One of the best artworks for my liking, I wish all magas were drawn like that. Characters (none of them) are not annoying and really captivating. The only big fault for me is the ending. Kind of sad and unsatisfying, I practically skipped the last chapter, when I saw where all of this is going.

First of all. Reading the prior reviews, I'm pretty irritated. Nothing ticks me off more than reading "cliche" in every review of a shoujo manga. When you are reading a "comedy, romance, school life, shoujo slice of life" manga... exactly what are you expecting to read? That's like reading a "shounen, ecchi, sports" and being surprised there's panty shots of girls playing sports. Honestly. Rant over, moving on. smile

This is a wonderful manga, highly deserving of it's rating. The character development is great and deeply enthralling to the point where you actually find yourself picking sides and rooting for that character until the end. And, when you get to the end you really feel that hit or miss. In any case, I've read a lot of shoujo manga and I definitely say this is in my top 10. Thank you for the read!

The premise is a cliche: girl moving away.
But the characters are what make this stand out.
If your looking a normal but entertaining shojo, try it.
The main character, Suzune, while a normal girl, is independent, isnt shy and has guts.
Mamura is the best character. He is not the usual love interest. His blushing thing is just hilarius, and he never does something stupid that make him lose his dignity.

(Sometimes, people (me) look for a well cliche. So if it is but has a twist or good execution like, this one, people will praise it. No need to get mad lol)

i just want to say i love her artworks, it's fantastic. but her storytelling? not so much. i felt so disappointed after a while. i just waited, hoping for the author to put together the story a little better eventually, but nothing happened so i dropped it. it really had a lot of potential to go somewhere. no character growth. just abrupt romance. i rooted for neither of the male leads (although i did like both) because the female lead was absolutely unlikeable to me. i didn't dislike her, her character was just really bland.
