This is such a bad manga

It made me feel so bad, uggh!
Maaan...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
But if any manga were to choose the second love over the first, this one depicted it the best. It just goes to show how society likes first love stories. The reason why her choice didn't feel perfect is because the author illustrated her love of both of them as true love(depending on the interpretation), which is something that can't change depending on the person. We like to think of love interests as soul mates, and other halves and this is the reason why we can't tolerate second loves. This viewpoint does not really show up in real life but it's everywhere in the shoujo world (of media). I think this is the reason why so many people, including myself, might have disliked the story, even though it was written so well, and prettily *sniffles*

Somehow, it feels unrealistic how she changed so easily, but hey, it depends on the person right? ... Right?

Crying because my ship sailed!!!

I love this manga! Honestly not your typical predictable shoujo romance manga! Especially because of the ending, which I felt not rushed or in what other people might think as the author's revenge. Laughed my butt off when I read that review. ((Which in part fueled me to write my very first review in this website and to encourage others to read this if they haven't already.)) The artwork is beautiful, and I love the characters and plot.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I love how she choose Mamura. Since majority of the shoujo romance manga, or any manga in general, the main character will always end up with the first person, also known as the person that many of the readers support. I, on the other hand, always somehow support the underdogs or those who I know deep in my gut won't get the girl or guy in the end. So I was practically oozing happiness when that didn't happen in this manga. Finally the author lets the underdog, the plan b, the nice guy, the one that finishes last, the one that everyone suspects to end up used and/or broken hearted, gets chosen by the main character! Go Mamura! Though I have no hatred towards sensei.

So I love the ending. And I feel like all those people that hated the ending are basing off their review on that last chapter and not on the whole manga itself. Which I think is really bias, but aren't all reviews, including this one, bias? Just don't flame this manga because of the last chapter. Because let's face it, along the way you loved it so much that you read it till the end. So yes, I love this manga and you should definitely read this if you haven't. Totally worth the read. Especially if you want an ending not typical of that of the normal shoujo romance manga we have nowadays. I hope Ao Haru Ride somewhat ends like this. Although after reading chapter 46 I highly doubt it.

it's so so so SO nice to finally see a shoujo where the heroine ends up with the "second" guy -- the one who loves her better, who treats her better, who she has a healthier relationship with... it's so refreshing and i'm so happy she and mamura are their cute lovely adorable selves. :'D

I was finding a good josei manga until i saw this one. This is a shoujo but not very shoujo -like the rest of the shoujos and that's why i got hooked into this manga. Not a common story for a girl to fall in love with a sensei and not a very cutesy protagonist. I love how she is, kind of awkward, but not to cute. Hey TheDreamHare! I also love Horimiya! As much as this one! I got hooked that i finished the 53 chapters in one day even though I was sick! Really looking forward to new chapters!!!!!! Excited for moreeeee!! Still rooting for satsuki! GO satsuki! And I'm a big fan of yuyuka and his cute sempai!

There's a sidestory...

There's a very short side story about a gay guy in highschool and the narrator noticing him and exchanging a very brief interaction with him. The message isn't deep or profound in any way but it was beautifully done. I would have loved to read more. It was really well written with just the right amount of openness to the ending.

I rated the main story a 6-6.5/10 because it was entertaining despite its many, many, MANY flaws but I would give that side story a full 10/10 for a shoujo piece.

Better than expected

This one was a roller coaster. I was attracted to this manga at first due to the lovely art and low-key drama that tends to be resolved in just a few chapters, which was a bit rare for a shoujo back in 2011. The characters were portrayed well and the main heroine was atypical for this kind of work, which helped in making you believe that the author was trying to subvert the more classical shoujo tropes. Unfortunately after while it became clear that she was still taking us for the same old high school romance ride as other titles in this genre, which made me lose interest and drop it.

Skip to three years later when, out of boredom, I go back to this now complete title and decide to finish what I started a long time ago. Sure, I can't say that there weren't cringe-worthy and cliche shoujo moments, but the general direction and ending managed to positively surprise me and left me an overall pleasant impression, justifying thus a relatively high rating on this site. In a way, you can see the author's own artistic growth along with the character's growth and this seems to translate in a much more mature and realistic ending than I was hoping to find years ago.

Although we mainly follow the coming of age of Suzume, all of the side characters are also treated with love and respect so the story is blissfully devoid of annoying 2D "sidekicks". Even the perspective of the more adult characters is shown, creating a stark contrast with the youthful problems of the main character. While it is still fluff material (hey, this IS shoujo) it has been refreshing to see a mature perspective on the awkwardness of a relationship with a substantially unhealthy age and dependency gap. These are the main reasons why I would suggest this shoujo to anyone, for while it keeps the main romantic characteristics of the genre it is also rooted in reality offering the reader a rare treat of a plainly happy and emotively cathartic end.

Flawed but it's so good

This is going to be a really long review and you don't have to read it xD I'm just expressing my personal opinion on this manga. I'll just be reviewing characters and plot.

Characters:- What can I say? I loved each and every character the mangaka showed to me. First off, Yosano. Yosano may seem boring and typical for a shoujo manga but in reality, she is very realistic. She's optimistic and strong-minded. Over time, we see her soft and weak side - the side of her which many denounce as 'stereotypical good-for-nothing shoujo girl'. I swear that that term gets misused so many times. It's as if as soon as a girl shows her feelings, she is automatically a typical shoujo girl. There is a difference between being plain, annoying and a coward and being a realistic, relatable and showing emotion. So yes, Yosano is awesome: she stumbles sometimes but she makes good decisions in the end. As for our two love interests (yes I'm clumping them together sorry) they are in very much contrast with each other, which is a good thing. Shishio is a childish, fun teacher who, though it doesn't seem like it, cares a lot about Yosano and her well being and it's hard to say this as a Shizume shipper, but he really needs to get his priorities straight.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
LIKE SERIOUSLY HE REJECTS HER AND THEN TRIES TO HUG AND KISS HER. JUST STOP PLAYING WITH MY SHIZUME FEELS
Mamura is a pure, innocent smol bean enough said. I freaking love him and he obviously cares about Yosano a lot, despite having his habit of being shy around women (it's so cute *^*). The side characters are also interesting: well by that I really just mean Yuyuka and Togyuu because nobody else was of much significance.

Plot:-
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Here we go. For the most part, I'm just talking about the ending and referring to the whole plot (mainly because people are so darn salty about the ending). And may I point out again that I am a Shizume shipper. Also a Mazume shipper but I ship Shishio x Yosano more. I thought the ending was perfect. It was so satisfying and such a good wrap up. What people who don't like the ending have to understand is that the mangaka wasn't trying to make a perfect ending. I don't want to seem like I know her and what her purpose was but it seems strongly to be that she created an ending which supported the plot of the story. Yosano fell in love with her teacher but got rejected. He started to like her too but couldn't tell her. All of this tension was built up until the 47th chapter - the turning point. Before this, I thought they were going to be canon but it was obvious on that chapter that their love was never going to work out. It was heart-wrenching to read. You get flashbacks of all the good times they had and all of it came crashing down. After this, Yosano tries to get over him and realises slowly that Mamura had always been there. I thought the transition was a little too abrupt, it almost made it seem like she went from one guy to the next. The ending finishes with Shishio finally confessing and then Yosano rejecting him. This chapter was astounding. It shows the true development of Yosano over the manga and how strong she had become. Also with Shishio too, he maturely accepts the fact that he lost Yosano as she races back to Okinawa. There, she is truly happy. She chose the path that didn't cause her pain and agony. Mamura and Yosano were the perfect couple. It was the message of the whole manga. So why do I ship Shizume so much? I have a lot of reasons but I won't list them here in the manga review ahaha

Flaws:-
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The love between Yosano and Mamura was so sudden. Out of nowhere, Yosano tells us that she's fallen in love with Mamura. For Shishio, it was built up over time but again, Yosano seems to fall in love with Shishio much too quickly - you could argue that it was just first signs of love and her understanding of why she loved him grew over time. The pacing of the manga was slightly askew and it makes me wonder is Shishio literally having mood swings or something because he goes from showing Yosano all the love in the world to the silent treatment.

OVERALL:- FEELS. FEELS. FEELS. TEARS AND CRYING. HAPPINESS. ONE OF MY FAVES I READ ALL 89 CHAPTERS IN A DAY. TEAM SHISHIOOO

what a mess...

Rating: 6.0  / 10.0
things i liked:
[+] art (god, the guys are gorgeous in this and the mixed friend? she was so cute. too bad we only saw her in different clothes like... three times....)
[+] shishio getting flustered all the time
[+] suzuzme being straight-forward, quirky, simply different from typical lead girls (in the beginning, at least)
[+] mamura not holding back when confronting shishio

things i didn't like:
[-] story is a literal mess. it feels like the mangaka didn't know what the hell she was going to choose until maybe the three last chapters and even then so much of the drama was so unnecessary (did suzume really have to go back?? did she have to make mamura feel insecure before leavingconfused couldn't she tell him what was going on rather than make him feel miserableconfused?)
[-] yuyuka kind of just falling back into the shadows even when she's constantly the one putting suzume back on track. really wished we could see her relationship develop as well as her personality flourish a little more.
[-] suzume is far too clueless in some ways; i felt it was a little much at times.
[-] all the shy stuff about kissing, etc. suzume seemed more straight-forward in the sense that if she wanted to kiss someone, she would do it, so it was a little disappointing that she would freeze up or do nothing when she clearly liked the guy. like, he's not reaching for her hand? well, who cares, she just reaches out for it anyway! i honestly expected that all the time lol

overall, the manga was pretty good, though i wouldn't re-read it.

since suzume wasn't really a concrete character and went too soft for my liking, i liked shishio's character the most. he seemed more thought out than mamura and had some depth to his thoughts, emotions, and mistakes. mamura's biggest flaw as a character was the whole "she's different from other girls" nonsense. if i had a dollar for every time that's "the reason i love her" given.....

it sucked that shishio was a grown man, doing things that are expected of him, but when he decides "fuck it, i'm doing what i want and taking on the consequences for it," there's so much unnecessary drama? and although i loved the concept of mamura, shishio was more appealing in more ways than one (but, hey, i have a type and shishio fits into it 100%). still, the ending is alright and i understand why it would be done this way. was just too rose-colored for me.

eh, overall, it was good enough to keep reading, even if it was mostly because i liked the art a lot lol

Ughhh this manga is really good. The current state of it is KILLING me rn but I really love this manga. I think the characters are my favorite thing about it.

The side characters, the main character, BOTH love interests, are well done and likable. I'm especially impressed at how much I love /both/ love interests because usually I just fall for the main guy and I want the side guy to leave lol. But Mamura is such a sweetheart and he's really a great guy so I really like him.

That said, I am a die-hard fan of a good age-gap manga and this one is no exception. I absolutely adore the character of Shishio-Sensei, I think he's amazing. And I am hoping that it's him who will end up with Suzume. At the same time, though, with just how good a character Mamura is, I want him to be happy. :') The impression that I get from him is that he's actually the male lead of a different shoujo manga and he got lost and wound up in this one. XD He is pretty great, but my two cents is that Shishio is better suited for Suzume.

Last note, for anyone considering this series:
I tore through all 70 chapters in about a day. It has a nice pace to it. It gives the side characters depth and story without distracting from the main storyline. The artwork is very pretty. (the guys are cute lol) The story is rly good and ugh. Imo everyone who's in the mood for a good shoujo manga should read it. smile

Simplistic, Decent

This is a pretty light read and overall a decent shoujo. Though, I don't think it's super extraordinary like some make it out as, despite liking it quite a bit myself. What makes this stand out at least enough to make it decent is its sensible realism and art style. Realism (in its basic concept) effects every part of the story, from how the plot goes to how the characters react. For example though there is a student-teacher relationship aspect, I feel it is done more tastefully than A LOT of other's I've seen or attempted to read. Additionally, the protagonist is very normal, sensible and down-to-earth in a pure kind of way. She's also draw very beautifully. And the male leads act a little more mature and rational. I also like them both (but maybe mamura more(?).

And finally, I find this a very simplistic read for two reasons, which is also partly why I don't find it going above and beyond. The plot is fairly simple and void of heavy or prolonged melodrama (sort of a good thing). And also by the fact that if I wanted to I could read most of the raws and I only know basic japanese from highschool a few years ago (LOL)... But maybe thats a plus if you want to read them and know a little japanese.

In all, it's good and I enjoy reading it. If you want a really great manga, mehh. If you want a nice high school shoujo I recommend it.
