Really good. <3

The Main characters are really good. But the most I was sad for Sariel & Beelzebub.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Their love was taken from them. They were separated for so long. Even when they finally meet they had to die. Nothing hurts my heart more than seeing 2 people who love each other getting separated and of course dying in each others arms. Also the sacrifice of Judas.
So much things to cry over. T_T

Still one of my favorites

It's been over a decade since I've read the manga, and this is still one of my favorite angel/demon BL manga of all time. I loved the religious references and twists in the plot, and the sacrificial love between Karasu and Shirasagi is so touching. I also love the subplot with Beelzebub and Sariel, which is only slowly revealed toward the end. And the twist with the third couple...just wow. Tons of the surprises and heartwrench factor really doesn't come til the final volume bigrazz

I gave .5 less because Beelzebub/Sariel could use some more screen time bigrazz Also I admit, *maybe* the series could have benefited from spreading out to one more volume. But on the other hand, I also like when the story just hints at things instead of spelling everything out. So I guess it's a matter of preference.

This is definitely more shounen-ai than yaoi (only vol.3 contains an actually H scene). So don't expect smut.

Going Around in Circles

Started off very well with a huge potential only to be crushed by the author himself.
Instead of focusing on the characters, the author had the whole manga revolved around the confusing idea of "God", with the story going around in circles. The whole manga feeds off the characters' confusion in their believes, wishes and what not but the author has missed out the huge chunk of character development. What started off as friendship between the two characters somehow miraculously turned into "love" for each other and miraculously turned into some kind of "eternal love" for each other where they would die for the other but the author has happily ignored the development into this stage of relationship.
What I look out for in every manga is character development, how the character has evolved by the end of the story and how they have grown but sadly for this manga nothing has changed. What you see in the first few pages is what you'll get by the end of it which is hugely disappointing.
I've also the feeling that the author himself was confused as to what he wanted to convey to the readers while dancing around the idea of the creation of God and what it actually is. Many important things were left unexplained, the ending was rushed, zero character development, Beelzebub had such potential in him but the author chose to shut him down in a few pages which was a huge turnoff and sadly the artwork could not make up for the whole unattractive plot.

Makes me want to re-read Angel Sanctuary
by Lillian

Decent story, just too short for its content. Could have made into a longer story. There was enough interesting background and extra characters. But since it only concentrated on the two main protagonists the surroundings were unfortunately only slightly touched. But even for the main chars I'd like to know more of their background. Would be great as extra stories but there was only an unrelated extra story.
That's also the reason for my downgrading. Id like it run longer and more fleshed out. I'm a sucker for such heaven and hell stories anyway in that heaven is quite rotten too. Angel Sanctuary (Tenshi Kinryouku) is my favorite there and with 20 vols a long and great journey.

The art is okay. I would like better action panels. Were too little detailed/worked out for my taste.
Karasu - the angel - looked cool with his goatee. Shirasagi - the priest, and demon - has the average look... like a boy from the neighborhood. His character was also too weak/shallow/flat for me. Karasu was more interesting.

However, it was a good read on my way to and from work.

Up till the middle of vol 3 it's also only shounen-ai.

The story was awesome..but I wish it were a yaoi manga instead of shounen-ai..I am sure the love making scene at the end would be the cause of nose bleeds with their wings wide open in contrast colors-black&white..angel&devil..sins&goods..would be a tempting explanation of the nature of love..
even so,I have bow Kisaragi-san..thanks for the great work...

This is one of the two works(one is Brothers x Brothers) of Kirasagi-sensei that I've came to like the most. Aside from the artwork being so beautiful, the plot was also fantastic. But I was hoping of more iBeezlebub-Sariel's story.

Fulfilling

This is not your typical yaoi read. It might disturb some religious traits and rules but its fictional, what are you going to do about it right? Anyway, the love between these two characters was weird cuz I dont understand how it started..? But it gradually increased and became a really nice couple! Ending was EPIC btw! Give it a shot, it's a really nice read and as I said, fulfilling! Great art, great plot, great ending, what else could be more satisfying? Oh and did I mention good-looking guys with a pair of HEAVENLY wings?

Very original and very good

It's one of most original yaoi I've read. Of course, the religious theme has a big part in it. I consider myself agnostic, and I enjoyed the questions this story brings up.

I have to say that's what I enjoyed the most in this story, like how one can be blessed when loved, or that it never leads nowhere to follow blindly any rules, and that you're creating the world you live in by your beliefs. These questions are very well introduced and treated, the trials the characters are facing really brings you to question yourself. It's rare to see such a philosophical quality in a manga.

But besides that, the themes it gets onto are so deep and complex, that it would have needed some more chapters (or volume) to feel like everything's been treated, at least for the story to feel thoroughly explained. And the end, despite being really good, felt just a bit rushed to my taste.

Even if I finally believed in their love, it didn't seem real at the beginning as there's not really any reason for them to sacrifive for each other, I didn't understand why they were suddenly so attached to each other. Though the only one sex scene comes at the perfect time in the story, as it's a very important moment, I'd have liked it to be a bit longer and detailed. But the characters, and not only the protagonists, are well developped, and I easily get attached to each of them.

Well, it's very good story if you don't mind religious theme which questions the very existence of God. I actually liked the evolution of the characters and the questions they're facing more than the love story in itself. And of course, I loved the art which is simply gorgeous.

Boring, sappy, annoying

Those were my only thoughts upon finishing Na mo Naki Tori no Tobu Yoake. Of course I was expecting an interesting, twisted, darkly tragic plot! Doesn't the description make it sound like it has one? But did I find any of those elements here? Nope. Not a one. Sad, but true.
I'm not kidding when I say there are slice-of-life BL with better plots than this!

I'm not Christian or Catholic, nor do I believe in the existence of god, angels, devils and the like, so the religious theme didn't offend me in the slightest. In fact, the twists on various Christian beliefs was the only reason I bothered reading this manga to the end. Perhaps not surprisingly, none of those issues were actually addressed in a satisfactory way. The mangaka did have some good ideas -- but neither the characters, nor the three worlds they were trapped between, went beyond anything other than mere props to lead to the ultimate conclusion; the angel falls in love with the demon and they live happily ever after *Sigh of exasperation*

And Shirasagi is supposed to be a demon, but I'm sure no one can disagree with me when I say even a human would've fought a 100 times more skilfully in such a situation. He just sits around waiting for Karasu to scoop him up into his arms and carry him off to safety roll It'd be okay if this happened once or twice...but every single time they're attacked!?

[ Yes, yes - I am aware that the "girly uke" stereotype is a feature common to most BL (which often makes me wonder "Why the heck doesn't this woman write shoujo smut instead?") but for some reason, I found it particularly annoying in this manga ]

The Beelzebub x Sariel side couple was infinitely more interesting than the main one, but their relationship got roughly two pages of focus before they
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
killed each other.

The art is fine, but nothing shockingly pretty. In all honesty I can say that the quality of the art (or its "bishie factor") has never been a good enough reason for me to rate a manga highly - and the same is true in this case.

If you're in the mood for a nice fantasy shounen-ai, I'd recommend Koori no Mamono no Monogatari. Typical and simply-plotted though it may be, Sugiura Shiho knows what she can do and does it quite well. But I'm afraid I can't say the same for Kisaragi Hirotaka.
