Bayesian rating: 8.67/10?!?!? Interesting concept, but apart from that, everything else here is HOT GARBAGE.

I feel this manhwa can only be appreciated by kids who won't be bothered by its shallow nature.
I'm writing this comment after actually revisiting this series and rereading it for the second time after being tired of it the first time and discontinuing it after 300+ chapters. I thought that the rating can't be for nothing so I thought that if I read it while now knowing the premise from my first run through, I wouldn't have any expectations and would be able to appreciate it for what it is. I was wrong. I have given up on hoping to find any redeeming qualities about this series and decided to stop torturing myself by reading after pushing up to 450+ chapters. I'm sick of this manhwa. There is so much to hate about this series.
Starting with the art. If you take away the bright, shiny and flashy colours and glossy look of the people that have been drawn, the drawings are of very low quality. The "artist" has a love for drawing disproportionately wide eyes so almost every character comes off having a dead stare with the MC having the most wide-eyed look in all situations regardless of his emotions. And these dead looks in the eyes look even more disturbing when the characters are drawn with smiles because the rest of the face doesn't match the smile. And then I frequently have to wonder about if a character is male or female because it's not clear from how they have been drawn. What a joke! This rubbish art with a bright and glossy finish brings to mind the phrase, "You can't polish a turd."
Another thing I can't stand is the repetitiveness of this series. Every single mini arc has to be punctuated with a game of some sort. Fine, there has to be a test passed for every floor, I accept that. But then every time there is a confrontation with an enemy, someone is always proposing a bet of some sort where the two sides compete in a game with a prize at the end. I couldn't believe that the author even managed to find a way to squeeze this go-to technique of his into a full scale war around 480 chapters in. That was my breaking point in reading this the second time but I still respected the author's determination to persist in using that already overused gimmick. I think this author must be in the wrong job and his talents would be better suited to coming up with board games or something similar because is clearly what he loves doing rather than storytelling.
Another nasty thing is the dialogue here. Why does every confrontation have to be stuffed with random characters shallow backstories that every one of these adversaries feel they need to share with a stranger they just met and that they are fighting as an enemy? There is so much unnecessary dialogue here. Either it is expounding on something that had already been explained earlier or saying the same thing that had been said earlier in a different way, this series has a enough of that to make you sick.
And then there is the rubbish world building and rubbish character development. It starts off with a naive MC who looks to be around 10-12 years old. And then he goes through varied experiences for years-the space of almost a decade-but in essence, the MC has not changed at all in terms of emotional growth. He still is almost as naive as he was in the beginning despite the story showing that he has gone through various experiences that would have to change the person in any normal scenario. This is a confused story with characters who have supposedly lived for centuries interacting with other characters who have lived for around two decades and it's hard to tell the difference between the two groups. You even have the around 20 year old MC leading these centuries old characters and them deferring to the kid on decisions. It makes zero sense.
I wonder what criteria has been used to give this book such a high rating, but I have read many average series' before that are far better than this rubbish. Don't let the rating fool you, this belongs in the trash.

pros
good art
interesting plot

bad
Idiotic MC
convoluted plotwists.
slow pace

I swear, ToG has its moments but the good is not enough to overlook the bad. the timeline make you think that several year passes but the inhability to grow from the MC. I think the author wanted to make Baam selfless and care for his friends but it really hasnt worked well. Enemies Baam refuse to kill end up killing and harming his friends.

other problem is the amount of side characteres with no real meaning. one current trope is the "growth" just before getting killed. If you see some character taking more exposition, its gonna get killed.

there's a problem and suddenly the MC activates the Deux ex Machina and plot armor and ..... he walks away unscratched.

Season 1= Good, Season 2= Dropped

Tower of God started out good with an interesting premise, a good cast (most of them pretty generic) and some creative tests/games. There are times you might draw comparison with Hunter x Hunter or some RPG games but most of the time it standed out on its own.

It's not original or even unique in world building (contrary to what blind fans claim) as ToG borrows most of the world building elements from other works but that's not bad if it's done well.

But the second season has been disappointing. Author has dragged many arcs in the second season maybe thanks to the popularity of Season 1. The tests are boring & they are not creative at all like Season 1. Many of the characters are flat & boring, and sadly the main character (Baam/Viole) still remains the same unidimension shonen idiot (the generic protagonist who has a heart of gold but brainless fool). I don't understand how author claims that tower is a world not for those who are afraid of shedding blood ~_~ Baam has easy time (without shedding blood) due to plot armor. Author wants us to believe Baam is suffering but not really.

There are battles which are dragged on for many chapters, the fights are boring to be honest. The most important part is that most of the battles are not even important to the series...author draws them just to drag the series.

Tower of God was one of my favorite series during its Season 1 despite the main character's generic & flat personality. But Season 2 has ruined it for me. Author seriously needs to stop wasting time on unnecessary things (especially taking more than 30-40 chapters which is terrible).

In short, Tower of God doesn't deserve such high rating.

This manhwa is by no means a masterpiece. The art is only mediocre and the characters are rather shallow. There isn't a lot of back story given to the characters and many of the side characters appear to only exist for the sake of fulfilling a stereotype. The problem is there are so many characters being introduced with only a small fraction of them being explored at all. TOG also suffers from boring and stereotypical villains which lack depth. There has also be a slow downgrade in the story. It is becoming rather predictable and cliche. The redeeming point of the manhwa is the plot, which is new and refreshing. The concept of a tower that grants power to whoever can reach the top is an interesting idea, and finding out what is at the top of the tower is the draw of the manga. The main character, while cliche, has his own set of problems that make the plot even more interesting. Therefore, TOG is good but not great.

A bit like HunterxHunter but...

A bit like HunterxHunter but less convoluted and draggy. The "game" is probably not as sophisticated but there is quite a bit of characterisation, team-building and world-building. Also, the writing is less contrived and more to the point, I think. Sometimes, I find a lot of similar comics spend too much time rambling about a certain point when they could've summarised it, instead of repeating the same words over and over.

And though it's a bit like HunterxHunter, I think the characters are making far more of an impression on me, even though only 43 chapters have been released.

And oh yeah, though the main character seems pretty cliched 'cos of his super power, it seems he isn't the only one.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
From what I recall, anyone who lived outside of the tower and who managed to enter it, had some sort of special power.

The art is quite rough at first but it evolves to become much better over time. Like many webcomics, it's made for fun, so the art quality isn't as accomplished as his CGed works. However, I think it's decent enough to convey the action and to emote the feelings and thoughts of the characters or to convey a certain situation.

Author is pulling a Berserk on us

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Rachel = Griffith: walking the path of corruption to reach her goals;
25th Baam = Guts: would love a calm life, but keeps getting dragged into sh*t for trying to reach Rachel, even after she declares her disdain for him.

World building doesn't mean a thing when the story moves at a snail pace...

The dialogue became cringeworthy by season 2 (you end up reading people repeat the same sentence 5 times each chapter, every chapter)...

Character development is nonexistent - powering up doesn't count.

... I want to see where it is going,
but one Berserk - incomplete and roundabout, even if people consider it a masterpiece - is enough, I don't need another one. My rating (7.3) is mostly for Part 1, as Part 2 would deserve a (3.1) by itself.

Update (v.2 c.167): this loses another 0.5 from me. The author just screwed his MC's personality.

After a good world building till the workshop arc, it suddenly gone down the drain. One of the best parts of first season was how there were lot of mysteries and slowly one after another was reveled to make a coherent plot all the while being compact and spot on. But now its just one battle after another and one game after another, and how protagonists outwits the enemies in a close call.

Introducing too many characters without any purpose isnt helping the plot either, its making the whole thing shallow. Instead of introducing so many characters how about improving the personalities of already existing characters. Bam stays as the bum he was in the beginning still chasing rachel, koon is the same cool guy he always was and rak is a comedy sidekick, hwa ryun is well.. a guide who does nothing but guide, as well as various other characters either someone from past who just suddenly pop into the story and show their awesome new powers they got in the time they were out. or some random top D class rankers who are hundreds of years old still being D rankers, who knows what they were doing all this time.

The thing thats been bugging me the most as of late is these frigging lame explanations behind those supposedly amazing powers -

whats with that haoqin and his many in one body, souls and stuff. voldmort's follower?
These are forced and lame, nothing like they were in season 1.

I'm just leaving the rating 8/10 in hopes that this would redeem itself after this arc. But my hopes are slim. As for this arc's score its 1/10.

I like ToG. I has many characters, its interesting keeping a tab on them all. It manage to be both funny and serious at times. There are a lot of nice twists here and I await the moment when all of these OP characters will start turning on each other - OP battle is dream come true. However... lately it seems to be stuck. I stopped reading more than a year ago in order to wait for more chapters and when I decided to catch up I found out that for that time nothing happened! WTF?! New characters are there but the old ones are pretty scarce. Bam acts too cold and damn it! Why the hair? I liked his girlish looks :< Oh, well. ToG is again on hold and I`ll probably give it a try after maybe 60-70 new chapters. See you next year ^^
