If you're looking for a very different shoujo story, then this is not for you, but if you just need a very nice, feel good shoujo romance, then this is it. There isn't much new in it, but it's well-made with pace, art and an okay plot. You will be entertained if you just read this without too high expectations.

I also liked the first extra story in volume five.

This is not deep in any way, but a sugary romance for a girl in a lovey mood.

I must agree with xObscurexOmenx... we'll mate, you said everything!
Make yourself a favor and go read Hana Kimi before it damages your brain!

Quote from xObscurexOmenx
The premise seems interesting. The characters seem interesting. It all seems like it would be, well, interesting.

Well, turns out that it isn't.

As has been said, this manga moves WAY too fast. The female lead seems rather stupid and simple-minded as well. For example, two people already know about her "secret" within the first few chapters, AND she actually yells said secret at the top of her lungs within the first few days of being "male." Which, to me, doesn't seem like a very smart move. So I wasn't too impressed with her foresight... Or lack of it.

As for any relationship, it definitely moves waaaay too fast for the situation, and Momoko's pushiness does NOT factor in well. Who declares, without any previous thought, her love to someone she has only known for a week or two? Apparently Momoko does. Who, after only a day or two of "dating" someone, orders that he should kiss her? Momoko again.

In short, everything just goes too quickly. The gender bending aspect of this manga is completely wasted by the early unveiling of the deception, taking away much of the story's potential. Also, Momoko's general personality just rubbed me the wrong way- she's naive, pushy, simple-minded, and physically weak.

Like many before me, it's important to mention that this manga is indeed very clique. Still, it's a funny read that will keep you entertained.

There's nothing new about a girl cross-dressing as a guy and sneaking into a boy's dorm. And it's pretty obvious from the very start where the whole thing is headed.

But still, the art is gorgeous, Seriously, the guys are HOT. And the main character, despite being your typical main heroine has some funny quirks to her that sort of sets her apart from other heroines with the same personality. Plus, I think the romance was well developed for the most part.

If you're looking for an original shoujo that will keep you on your toes, then no, this isn't the manga you should be reading. But if you're looking for a fun romance with quirky characters, then it wouldn't hurt to give this a try.

Characters: 6.5/10
Art: 10/10
Plot: 6/10

Entertaining Read

The first thoughts I had when I started reading this manga were: "This is nothing but a Hana Kimi knockoff". Even the main characters had a resemblance! Nevertheless, I decided to finish it. And I must say I'm glad. While the series does have some resemblance to Hana Kimi and holds every shoujo cliche you can fit in there, it's still pretty entertaining. There are some funny moments and it's overall very enjoyable. And there's also the final side story: "The Change of Feelings Line". That was truly a beautiful heartwarming story. I was glad I decided to finish this manga, otherwise I would not have read that story.

This is a really wonderful series full of problems that you can relate to in reality. Haha, I could feel Takanashi's pain about barely getting to see Itou in the end. I didn't really like Kawamaki though (the homosexual guy)... :/ But I really did feel his pain when everyone knew that he was gay, sitting in the middle of the room being picked on like that.

I love it! I rarely ever reread manga but with this one, I reread it all the time. it's shoujo, and all shoujos contain cliches. I found the female lead adorable, she's dumb but to an extent and you know that she truly is a good person. it was cute, and it made me laugh, I love it. I love shimaki ako's works, and this is one of my faves.

1) I read this before Hana Kimi, but I still must admit BoNaWa is unoriginal. Shoujo cliches are present. However, some people like shoujo precisely for this aspect (like how cheap romnovs always have a happy ending). Remember that 75% of manga is entertainment, not art; this question for this series is, does it manage to entertain?
2) The artwork is very good. I can't really fault it at all, and it stays at the same quality throughout. It's clean, (relatively) realistic and pretty rather than spectacularly beautiful. It's totally modern, I can't see any Saitou Chiho-style oldschool influence. Facefaults are used reasonably sparely however.
3) I disagree that the series is fillerish. It's only 5 volumes and I found it reasonably tight. Nothing comes to mind that I would really cut out. Plus there are extra stories.
4) The characters are unoriginal. The guys are hot, but that's all there is to them. The girl isn't unpleasant, ugly or dumb, but just not interesting.
5) The storyline is, I've already said, unoriginal. It's unrealistic, but manages to look realistic anyway (probably helped by the aforementioned art). Its attempts at humour have mixed results; I smiled mostly.
6) So in conclusion, this series is mildly entertaining. There are far better examples in this same genre, even if all you want is generic shoujo.

to me, it's like a cheap imitation of Hana Kimi. kind of like.. whoever wrote this was annoyed that it took Mizuki and Sano so long to get together in Hana Kimi, so they made it happen quickly in Boku ni Natta Watashi. It's definitely too quick though. The characters don't even know each other and they're confessing! jeez. plus there's a *little* smut. it's just mindless shoujo; I see no real value in it. The art is good, but nothing special, the plot is boring & overused, and the characters have no dimensions. I'll probably keep reading it because I don't mind stupid shoujo so much. it's a matter of opinion, I suppose.
