This is such a wonderful story- short but sweet, with a lot of tragedy mixed in with some really heartfelt moments that made me feel quite saddened and sympathetic towards the fate of the foursome as well as Nataku. Not many things can bring a lump to my throat, and the prequel to the Saiyuki saga (of which I am not a fan) was the last manga I expected to be able to do that- so I was quite taken aback when it did.
Still, I do feel that the political side of the story was slightly underdeveloped. The talks of power-play and corruption among heaven's administration were enjoyable- though the details were rather sketchy. I would have liked to see more on the subject; it definitely would have made this manga more intriguing.

This manga must be one of the best mangas I have read by far. I'm really not an expert when it comes the business of manga and sure, the scanlations could have been better and easier sometimes, but the art was beautiful, the plot comprehensive and without any bigger holes and the story amazing and unique.
But the thing that puts this manga so absolutely on top of my lists is its emotions. It was just so beautiful, heartwarming, loving and so freaking heartbreaking!! I really ended up crying my eyes out, even though I knew I would see all of the characters again in the sequel. The author really deserves a big prize for the way she touched (and kinda shred) my heart with the story of the lonely monkey king boy that goes to heaven and finds a family. (jesus I'm starting to cry again just writing this, it really must have hit a spot with me *__*)
SO READ IT!!!!!!!!!

sorry for the crappy title..
i have enjoyed minakura-sensei's saiyuki ever since i was a child, which brought me to this prequel..
but i had read hundreds of mangas and this was the first that made me cry in one sitting ( i mean i finished reading it from 12:30 am-3am; also there were others that had made me shed a tear, not bawl my eyes out) i've read mangas that i can consider to be so full of drama than saiyuki gaiden, but there was something in its uniqueness that made its way as one of my favorites.
that was so good..
and yet there was a part of me that wanted them alive..not reincarnated, but alive.
amazing. (wait, i still have to sleep. i have my classes.)
what are you waiting for?
read it for yourself to find what all of us are telling you
definitely worth of your time.

I think this is the best of the three Saiyuki manga. The fighting is really amazing and you get to see what made our beloved foursome into...well our beloved foursome. A must read for Saiyuki fans and for anyone who loves action and a great plot.
Sorry guys but....

I know this is an uncommon opinion, but this manga honestly only made me bored and exasperated. Now, it's not that I'm desensitized and unable to connect with the world. I just couldn't suspend my belief while reading this.
The panels of each page are crammed, with multiple guys that look the same as one another. The tale is also hard to follow for those unfamiliar with the original story (aka Me)
I could not share my sympathy for any of the characters like I did in many other stories.
