Its good but it also has its share of weaknesses. I think the story starts out really strong. Its mysterious because no one has a clue what's going on at first, with fatal consequences. It has elements of horror in the beginning because the characters never know the whole situation that they are going to get thrown into, they are powerless against Gantz and its machinations so there's a good feeling of being trapped, and anyone can die. There are alot of bad people in this series, some are supposed to be on the "good guys" side, which sometimes makes it more disturbing than what they are supposed to be fighting. On top of that, one of the main leads starts off as kind of a selfish jerk, who slowly evolves over time. All of this is decent.
Unfortunately, there are weaknesses, some plot holes, and a few things that never get explained as the series moves on. A few times, it felt like the author was stretching for ideas and some of it became filler. The story started out small but has ramped up relatively quickly, arc after arc to mega-scale confrontations. The result is that some of the character development, plot and romance aspects have taken a back seat. This is unfortunate because its become a bit shallow, and lost some of the atmosphere it had in the beginning.
Another criticism that other reviewers have made and I agree with is the artwork. The characters look good and the art style has matured in contrast to early Gantz and certainly since the mangaka's earlier work Hen. However, the backgrounds are sometimes terrible. Its obvious that some are photos that have been run thru some Photoshop-type filter and it doesn't match the artwork well.
I still like Gantz and I am sticking with it, hoping that the writing will turn its focus back on the characters and resolve some of the many issues that have been left hanging.

to all the people saying gantz is uninteresting, try reading all the new chapters now that there out in succession. it may have just seemed that way since months would go by before a new chapter was released and a lot of those chapters were just 20 pages of nothing, leaving u sitting for another month until something happened......thats why i just kinda let gantz slip from my mind for some months, looked at it today and had like over 10 chapters to read in a row, really makes a diff.

until about five volumes, this manga is nothing about gore and boring story line. but well, the main idea is fascinating and the application is good enough.
from then until about volume 20, this manga is very interesting. there are character development, new challenge, plot twist, and neat style.
from then until now, the manga turned unbearably boring. the art is hybrid of hand drawing and photograph which doesn't joined gracefully. they are like patches and it doesn't improve as time goes by. every chapters not showing a good story development, three volumes (27-29) don't mean anything. the plot hole doesn't make this manga interesting like it happens in earlier volumes, they're just upsetting. i don't know when the story and art will improve. i still keep hopes, but very little.

I love this Manga's original concept and characters though I've kind of lost interest recently around chapter 305 it just seems to be driving if its self into a rut I don't know I just loved the balance between the action and romance though in the recent chapters it really seems as if the romance has really taken a backseat and by that I mean practically nonexistent

I watched the Gantz anime awile back and didnt relly find it too my liking. recently i decided to give the Gantz manga a try because it is so popular. I gant beleave i put the Amazing manga off for as long as a did it is the best acion/story/art oriented manga i have every read and others in the same gonera dont even come close to how Awesome this is. the Characters start off scared and wimpy to eventally becoming the hero's of earth and at times you will feel sorry or even sad when one of the characters die. there ist much more i can say other then you MUST and i mean MUST read this manga in your life time. Thats why i must give the manga a................

Its AWESOME and i mean its a great manga. the beginning and the final phase are my favorite parts. The art is really cool. some of it aint drawn but i say i rarely see that in alot of todays manga. Its true to its genre its a MATURE manga and only those who can stand seeing gore and i mean like floors covered with bodies and body parts and blood. it tends to lose u in some chapters but if u read the whole things it draws u into its world. makes u think to about what a soul is and the price of a life and how humans can be both the most frail and yet strongest creature alive.
It's a "survivor" theme.

Tough looking boys and girls chop and gun down aliens, or get smashed, eaten or blown up. There is no end to this and someday it'll just be abruptly stopped.
I didn't hate it. But it's my kind of leisure reading.
Shinjuku chapter were most disturbing, btw. (Lots of innocent people killed for no good reason) - if you think massacre is not for you, don't try this one.
