Stellar Gag Manga That Becomes Serious
by LazyReviewer

First and foremost, this is a gag manga. Plenty of tsukkomis, puns, awkward and silly situations that often come quickly and often. It takes serious situations and makes light of them, but in an absurdist way. And then things get serious and you will ride that roller-coaster of emotions.
It often straddles the line between setting up or executing a joke and situations that are serious. And it usually does this well.
Characters are all jerks in their own way and also loveable in their own way. And they're often aware of it. Makes for a lot of self-deprecation and chaos.
It competed directly against the big 3 manga at the height of their popularity and held its own admirably. It has some of Shonen Jump's most memorable scenes (fight or otherwise).
The mix of alternate history, mythology and science fantasy is odd but makes for a memorable setting and interesting world building.
Really interesting but don't stop reading until you finish (keep with the story) because it does get to be too much to try and remember it and anything else.
Highly recommend.
Oh, and as someone who has been ignored by the dog due to the dog wanting my glasses, I know how gla—I mean, Shinpachi feels.

Plot: 7.5/10
Very uneven plot: some epic, some emotional, some genuinely funny, some utterly disgusting and time wasting. After all, a long running series resulted in some recycled plot in itself. The ending arc was too long and exhausting to read. Sorachi is better with short arcs. He's good at creating oomph moment. But you can't have too many oomph moments simultanously. At the end, I just felt 'thank God, it finally ends.'
Art: 7/10
Nothing spectacular but it's alright most of the time. Character designs are stylish enough to distiguish between characters. Props to the author for not doing lazy art (unlike lots of shonen authors) for most of time.
Characters: 8/10
A large but engaging cast, especially the main characters. Gintoki is a such badass and down to earth hero.
Enjoyment: 8/10
Gintama is definitely an entertaining read, making you forget about your daily life problems without killing too much of your brain cells.

This is one of those series that starts off as a light-hearted episodic slapstick comedy, & gets progressively more serial & dark, until the next thing you know there's lots of blood, fighting, & the story arcs get longer & longer & the character development gets deeper & digs more into the background.
I wish in the end the series had not gotten quite so serious, or rather that it had taken much longer breaks from the serious drama instead of having short comedy arcs that reminded you of why you got into the series in the first place. I'm quite sick of this happening to every damn comedy I get into.
As annoyed as I am by this, I have to admit that it did both the comedy & the drama well. One of my favorite quirks of the series is that everyone is ether an asshole, an idiot, or both. Like Hunter x Hunter & Jojo's Bizarre Adventures, all of the women are spicy pepperpots. All 3 series also have a crazy yandere, extreme family issues, & a deadbeat hero dad.
Obviously, w334800, who has the exact opposite complaints as me, did not make it to volume 11.

i guess i shouldnt have had any expectations. the humor isnt so great in my opinion. it feels like theyre trying too hard to have comedy in every line but despite that i can read several chapters without a single humorous exhale. 0.5 of my rating goes to the few times i did find something funny. I really like funny things, dont get me wrong, but theres nothing unexpected enough to be very funny to me.
theres little to no plot. it feels like... do you ever go through through the comics in the newspaper for funny comics but you get to the Spider-Man comic and you have no intention of following the continuity of why Mary-Jane got captured this time? now this is the opposite. you come in to get invested in a story but you feel like you're going through a compilation of garfield comics. the few times you get a wholesome "message" at the end of the chapter it doesnt really reach your heart. the moment it might get a bit to you, you can feel it. its another pointless punchline or maybe a hundred pointless punchlines
the art is decent but just worth another 0.5 into my rating. its decent but thats all it gets. the expressions are funny but its not the types that make me zoom in on the expressions and be like 'haha this expression drawing skill did an excellent job in assisting the quality of humor". if anything the expressions feel overdone.
i started this choosing between Gintama and Hunter X Hunter as long as HECK manga. i chose Gintama because some guy at an anime convention said its a very funny anime. haha i like funny things. i went 43 chapters in only to think eh this is pointless. maybe it translates better as an anime. or maybe it just wasnt meant for me

i have watched gintama (the anime) roughly around when the first season came out, within a couple of episodes, (The turtle episode to be exact) i stopped watching it. I have not read the manga, so this was new to me as well. Enough about me, here is my statement for this manga. Since watching the anime, I thought it was weird, and i was not going to bother wasting my time reading the manga, i have come to understand what a mistake that was. I am an avid fan of this manga, some of the jokes i probably do not get, as i am not based out of japan and i cannot get the irony, but most of it is quite funny. There is enough seriousness in this manga to catch the attention of readers, and there is enough funny and weird happenings to keep it fresh. I will be a loyal fan of this mangaka till the bitter end. Its a great read, if you have given it a few chapters, give it a couple more, it gets better and better. Whether you laugh, cry, it is one of my all time favorites, and i know it can be for you to, just give it a shot!

At first, I was put off by the setting. Aliens in Edo? It looked too unrealistic/far-fetched, and I didn't think it would be my cup of tea. But then, I got bored one day, and I tried it out. The first few chapters were 'meh' but as I continued reading, I found it more and more compelling. When I got to the first serious arc, I was hooked.
This manga is definitely labeled as a gag manga, but it has made me cry more than a few times. The characters are distinct and fleshed out. Plus, the parodies are hilarious, and more than that, it keeps you wanting more.
You see continued growth and change in relationships and characters, even if there is no visible singular plot line. In fact, Gintama is so amazing because of it's lack of that singular plot. It's not limited in where the story, and hence the characters can go.
So if you have time, and you're willing to try for something a little different, give Gintama a try. I never regretted it, and I hope you won't either. ^^

I'm a huge Gintama anime fan and think everyone one should watch it at least once. Why? Let's see, it has hilarious moments, sad, tragical, heart warming, ridiculous, boring, some very very boring, some educational (no, seriously!) moments and few more which I cannot think of right now. One episode you are laughing until your stomach hurts and then there are times when your throat aches terribly cuz it's just so fucking sad!! But, all in all, this is an amazing Anime! You just have to watch it to understand how awesome it is. And it's not awesome cuz it has some unique stuff, instead it's awesome cuz it explores usual things in a usual way that you can relate to and feel.
I swear, there are few things that have made my life so worthwhile, and Gintama is one of them.

Gintama is referred to as gag manga. I mean, I'm all for a great comedy, but to read all 500+ chapters? How long until the gags get old? Until I get bored? Is it really worth all that time just for a GAG manga?
Yes. Holy mother of god YES. Not only have I caught up, but I'm currently finishing up the anime (which is pretty damn faithful to the manga). Gintama ended up being way more than just a few laughs. You will cry. You will feel distressed. And impressed. And just...you will get incredibly emotional. Right after feeling incredibly awkward. Because this is Gintama after all. Penis and poop jokes are abundant. Along with tears.
Man, it's hard to describe.
First off, Gintama is comedy. I've seen it called Japan's version of South Park or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It tackles every form of humor including word play (which sometimes gets lost in translation), tongue in cheek humor, toilet humor, parodies, breaking the forth wall (and it does it soooo well) and so forth and just plain absurdity (There is an arc where Gintama's penis is turned into a screwdriver. Everyone is turning into screwdrivers. Those damn aliens). If you're looking for humor, Gintama will serve you more than enough. There is a downfall to this though. If you're not familiar with Japanese culture or even some popular figures, some gags will fly right over your head. But fortunately, this doesn't occur often (and usually translators try there best to give explanations!).
The world Gintama takes place in is pretty silly and insanely genius. The cross of historical and futuristic. Fantasy and science fiction--literally anything is possible in Gintama. There is space travel and demons. Historical figures use bazookas instead of katanas. Gintoki rides a scooter while searching for a fan while carrying a wooden sword and passing citizens dressed in kimonos and yukatas. This pseudo historical fantasy science fiction is the foundation of Gintama and it would be nothing without it.
But here's the thing: Gintama is a comedy with a black heart and a silver soul. As raunchy it may be, deep down there is a something warm and fulfilling. It took about 100 chapters for me to really get and feel the characters. Roughly around 200 chapters I became a blubbering mess (couldn't contain my laughter or my sobs). Through the humor and madness, Gintama is a masterful narrative that flows backwards. Our shounen hero never develops. Ever. But as an audience we change out view of our hero with each bit of information we learn from his past. Bit by bit, piece by piece, we see what our hero has suffered. You look back at things he's said or actions he's done with new understanding of his character, personality and values. Gintoki is a fully developed character from the start. It's you as a reader who develops as the manga progresses.
The vast secondary characters work in similar ways. But unlike Gintoki, occasionally they will get a spot light that allows them to grow a bit. Some of these arcs are just as absurd and hilarious as others, but they carry a soft moral core. In the end, Gintama will always be about making connections and living a content life, even if it includes lying around all day reading manga or having weird sexual kinks or being a female and living your life as a man. As long as your soul is clear and your thoughts happy, you live however the hell you want.
So many dick jokes and so many tears. That's Gintama.

Gintama is gag-manga that has a sci-fi-esque feudal Japan setting. Just with that is enough to see that this manga isn?t even attempting to be serious. This manga is about humor over plot.
The absurd setting is what always Gintama to put the characters in different funny situations. From being stalked by an assassin, working on a sushi restaurant, being captured by a gang of aliens, pursuing a runaway cat, etc. Since it is Japanese comedy is normal to expect some absurd jokes. There?s a lot of toilet humor, dark humor, white humor and puns.
Despite being a gag manga, it has an interesting cast. Gintoki, the protagonist, is actually a very unique character on its own. A veteran of war who has lost many things but still keeps on living. Shinpachi, a boy who is a samurai apprentice. Kagura, an alien girl with super strength that is trying to avoid being consumed by her powers. And the list goes on and on.
The most amazing feat of Gintama is that isn't limited to comedy. Since it is episodic, sometimes there are some heartwarming chapters. There are even serious arc that bring back the plot of story. In these arcs, Gintama is able to touch some dark tone, comparable to that of a common action manga. And being sincere, these arcs have nothing to envy other shonen manga?s arcs. Nothing. Even though they are shorts. In other words, Gintama has everything: action, adventure, comedy, drama, sadness and good lessons to learn.
I would recommend this to those who are fond to Japanese humor, because it is necessary to be used to it. The best way to enjoy it is by watching the anime. Because the manga has much more dialogue than Death Note, which can be tedious, especially since the point is to laugh.

To tell the truth, this series is better to be consumed as an anime rather than manga. Sometimes there's too many panels or too many text balloons filled with text that it's a little tiring to even just look at a page. BUT! If you manage to get used to the presentation, it's quite an interesting read.
Art - the characters are all quite similar-looking and the art style isn't as good as, say, Oda's or Arakawa's or Kishimoto's. Even the mangaka points this out with his omake on how to draw the three main characters. Sorachi's good in drawing funny faces, though.
Characters - I like them all, no matter how crude or vulgar they are. I guess that's their charm. They're all pretty static characters, but with a gag manga that's mostly episodic, it's to be expected.
Story - Some of the stories are so-so, but I've enjoyed most of them. The ones I like the least are probably the parody ones (like the Elizabeth star wars parody arc, though I enjoyed the Saw parody a lot), which Sorachi had said he does when he's sick hahaha But really. This guy is good. When he makes senseless comedy he never fails to make me laugh like an idiot, and when he makes a drama episode/arc man I'm crying and sniffling.
Bonus points for having no 'attack names' hahaha
This is definitely one of the very few (the other being Yotsuba&) manga that I want to go on forever.
