Great potential here

As the previous posts have said, this one holds tremendous potential. An out-of-the-ordinary story that has all the necessary ingredients to become a masterpiece. Gives a similar feel as claymore in my opinion, but Vinland Saga targets perhaps a more mature audience. I loved claymore, but I think I will love this one even more. Can't wait for the next release.

Startlingly Engaging

Vinland Saga is a violent, meticulously orchestrated tapestry of characters that, it seems, is truly only beginning to flourish. At the time I began the manga, I could scarcely believe that someone who created Planetes could possibly produce something like this as well, but I'm quite glad I was proven wrong. Vinland Saga, although I truthfully can give no credence as to its historical accuracy, is one of the best-told period pieces out there, settling among the ranks of titles like [m]History[/m] and Cesare. I feel confidant that my opinion will only improve in the future.

Another great work by Yukimura. Good character design, great story, awesome fights... everyone should give it a try.

Thanks to MS for all the earlier chapters and to Anonymous Spore for all the work he's doing now that he has retake the series. Thank you ;)

The art kind of reminds me of Berserk, only more...clean? Not quite as sketchy, i guess, but very close in terms of quality imho. Plot is just a bit linear, revolving around Thorfin trying to avenge his dead father, but Vinland makes up for it in sheer badassness (is that a word?). The fighting scenes are really amazing; they have this sense of speed, motion, impact, etc that makes it seem like you're watching a movie, not pictures on a page.
I love how Yukimura is able to manipulate the mood so perfectly...from the tranquility of an elder telling tales to children to the chaos of an army storming a fortress.
An easy 10 from me.

And the HQ scans really do the art justice...

The topic that the mangaka works with is not a new one. People have told stories about the greatness of having raw physical strength, and many have also criticized how this force, to get your way, is not real strength. The main character, Thorfinn, believes in using his physical abilities and using his anger to fuel it. When the anger dies out he loses what he once lived to do. He questions his actions and the world he lives in, and thus begins his transformation.

The manga is overall, strong. The personalities of the characters are well presented and you're well introduced to the world. It's not without blemishes though. The mangaka too quickly, too sloppily, forced some of his characters to undergo their changes. The suddenness is questionable and could have been avoided. Still, the mangaka tells this story well, and it's worth a read.

I don't look forward to manga's next chapter. I've never really gotten attached to the characters, but I am curious about how thorfinn will grow. It's too bad. The story just falls short by a bit.
