BE BOLD ..(Fail)

Although it ended nicely , I can't help but feel disappointed and unsatisfied ...[SPOILER:I mean what was the point in having the story just to have the guy live in the end ??SPOILER] , I know the mangaka tried to please us but I just felt so unsatisfied and completely dumb found ...

For me I was really hesitant about reading this , tbh I skimmed a bit and read the important parts then skipped and so on. The beginning was really sweet and tbh I kind of wish they stayed 12 for a little longer .The story just felt soo unrealistic and I would sat this is more aimed at a younger audience ,now that I think about it after their early stages this was flipping depressing.

I feel like if the mangaka had been a little more bold and more 'out there' it could of been A lot better.'Tragedy' I just don't see this at sad ...not one bit , she/he failed and the ending wasn't very clear either it felt rushed . Overall I would say I have more complaints towards this then pleasant comments , all I say is the reviews are always right , by today this manga is already forgotten , its just left me with a sum what dirty feeling .

Suspension of Disbelief

It's shoujo manga. It's melodramatic. It's full of does-this-happen-in-real-life situations, and teenage angst. And I just love it for what it is.
Takuma's feelings are really full-on, and it doesn't drag on hopelessly forever. Although it's in the longer manga category, I enjoyed every bit of it and think it's length is pretty justified.
I really like this type of art, too, which is always nice.

On the note for the whole medical accuracy...well. I didn't really expect that to begin with, really...(i mean, would you, for a general shoujo?). But I agree with the point made by Iyransi about the bias against brain death. It's important to remember not everything you read is necessarily true or correct, and your beliefs should be reviewed by something a little more substantial than a fictional read.

The art style was bearable. For a while. But it ended up not captivating me as I went along. It was a pick up and drop series for me. It started out good, but I gradually just became annoyed with the entire thing. The problems got repetitive. There was barely any character development or relationship development. I tried all the way to the end hoping for these things, and it did not deliver, frankly only proving how static and dim witted ALL the characters were. I was really hoping and expecting a lot more since it seemed to be highly recommended.

One of the biggest things that bothered me besides the personalities of the main characters were the parents. The parents were probably some of where I drew the lines of this even being a good manga. They acted as childish if not more so than their off spring. They offered a weak obstacle (the moms so to speak) in their children's relationship.

Needless to say, I was not touched at all. The idea of it was sad and good. But it was not executed well at all. Even the ending did it no justice but made me dislike it even more. I think it was supposed to go into that deep trailing off and suppose-to-make-you-wonder kind of deal. Instead I was frustrated with all the loose ends and cliche cheesiness of it. It wasn't adorable at all it was just a disappointment. Especially the events leading up to it, having no basis for Takuma to not gain the heart from a willing donor. I don't think she did the research especially on Brain Death very well as even her most viable source of info in her manga didn't even take a logical approach to it and I hate to point it out again but this just once again shows the great stupidity radiating in this entire manga. Not to mention that everyone here are emotional driven fools!

This mangaka is highly praised. So I even went and attempted to read her other work. They were as two dimensional, some varying even better than this, if not some even worse. I don't think I will want to pick up a manga from this mangaka again.

The Ending

2 years ago i found an article, Aoki Kotomi said that the planned ending is sad ending (the movie) but it changed because of her fans begged her. Dont worry about the black frame at the ending because she use it for night scene (see other chapters) thanks to the moon. so, his dream came true.

Why do I feel a little disappointed?

Okay first. The girl, the heroine is a crybaby and she doesn't consider other peoples feelings. With her is "Pull or push" she won't pick one and constantly pick both of them. She doesn't understand the sick boys parents because he IS gonna die and they haven't spend time together and she goes. "Oh! I'm going to steal Takuma away!"

And another thing is that brain dead means the person is dead. They won't open their eyes and give you a smile with a "Good morning." It's just a empty shell with a beating heart.

Dropped it at chapter 61. I can't take it with the crying, I know it's suppose to make my sad...but nope, I feel nothing.

All in all this was pretty good from your normal cliche.

The writer of this manga took me on a roller coaster ride. It's a bitter sweet love story with lots of twists. I love the way they captured the characters and slowly released a little of their personalities. It added depth and richness to their passionate moments. I can be a bit of a cynic and there were times that I felt that it dragged a bit but on the whole this was an excellent read.

i've been reading this for 3 years now, following the scanlations and it is one of those series which never gets me bored.it just makes you keep reading, knowing that at some point takuma will die. i haven't finished the manga yet, though ive watched the movie (because i became impatient with the scans). i must say, the ending of the movie was okay, so-so and a bt touching actually, but i cant wait to read the manga ending. i mean, does takuma die? (given the tragedy tag), or does he live? true that happiness doesn't necessarily have to be when you're alive. anyway, it's not cliche, nor boring, the heroine is strong willed and takuma (oh my god, he's just so cute when he's breaking down >.<) is just so pitiful and the plot is like koizora (but way better). anyway, reccomended for any shoujo lovers and drama freaks smile
edit: i finished the last chapter and my heart hurt like hell. i remember my first impression of this was a smutty corny shoujo. typical with a bit of twist. But now that I`ve made it through, I changed my mind and this actually made me teary more than thrice (which never happens except on stuff like koizora and some really deep stories.) it takes a lot to make me cry but this only takes a few pages to make tears stream out of my eyes. I like it because it comes from a guy`s POV and even though there might not be real guys like Takuma (who loves Mayu so bad), at least he exists even in a manga. One of the best. I could reread this over again without stopping midway.

Propogates a horrible misconception

I initially enjoyed reading this series since it was a fun read. However now, I'm only left feeling disturbed by how Aoki Kotomi distributes her misconceptions about organ donation via her manga. It's one thing for the teenage protagonists to misunderstand brain death, however for a doctor to make the same error can only be blamed upon the author's biased and misconceived notions against organ donations.

Brain death is the permanent termination of all brain activity and thus is legally valid as a determinant of death. When there is a complete absence of any brain activity over a span of time, the complex brain functionality required to cry from emotional pain (I'm assuming emotional pain due to the lack of any mentioned physical pain reflexes) as described by the doctor in this manga is impossible. Yet he never questions a misdiagnosis and merely accepts that the brain is alive during brain death. By having all the main characters supportive of this stance with the doctor as the only authority and no opposition refuting this claim, the contradiction that the brain is simultaneously alive and dead in all instances of brain death simply becomes the manga's truth.

I also find it somewhat disturbing that despite the donor and his family having consented to donating, other characters would work towards convincing the family to oppose the donor's wishes. Organ donations are already so scarce in Japan due to the lack of donors. Aoki didn't need to further proliferate such antagonism towards signing the donation card with her manga by providing such erroneous reasoning.

If you're sick of typical shoujo mangas that have no plot, this is an excellent read. Why? Well... The roles are flipped in that the vulnerable one is the guy and the tough one is the girl.

All the events that lead up to the end is necessary in order to give you a sense of life... a slice of life. There are opened wounds that cannot be stitched back together, but it's just how it is in real life. You can't have everything that you're asking for, because life is fair, not excellent. You'll feel a wave of emotions... happiness, anger, sadness, loneliness, hope. Honestly, there were parts when I wanted to give up reading. BUT I'm glad I didn't stop. There's a purpose to every arc of the story.

In my opinion
Spoiler (highlight to view)
it got the happy ending it needed to compensate for the way that Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru ended... life is fair and not unfair. In order to have the happy ending for this series, one needed to have a sad ending. BECAUSE happiness is more precious than sadness, we needed to sacrifice the happiness of two people to gain the happiness of two others. Isn't that implied though? Yori did tell Takuma to marry the girl he loves. We all knew that one way or another, they will be together... Mayu couldn't exist in a world without Takuma, and Takuma is the same. I'm not implying a sad or a happy end... because I, for one, know that the end is bitter sweet... much like how I viewed Koizora.

Another thing...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
for those of you guys who finished it and read the manga, it's funny how the ending for the movie is definite, while that of the manga was so vague that both parties of happy ending and sad ending are left satisfied.

Overall, I think the manga is surprisingly well done. As I've said, there is a reason to every detail in the story... AND for those of you who are impatient about the ending, I can spoil some parts of it for you. Hit me up with a message. smile

Not a waste of time, but not a must-read...

Some edit I should make: Your degree of enjoyment while reading this is highly determined by your age and intelligence. I was around 16(?) when I first read this and found the manga sappy but still really liked it. It's been 4 years now and I'm reading it, and I found the entire thing full of BS. It's probably because I'm in the medical field and know a lot more about heart diseases, but reading about Takuma's disease and the author's ideas about organ transplants just make me face palm. But if you're the type who can ignore faulty details, the manga's not too bad.

Although I wouldn't call this a great manga and recommend it to everyone I know, it's not that crappy as well... Certainly, everything is very typical shoujo, except for the most part, Mayu has the cliche shoujo male lead traits (ie good at everything) and Takuma has the typical female personality (ie always needs to be protected). But I do find it interesting that the story is told mainly from the point of the guy. I would say that compared to the author's other works, this is her best (which really isn't saying a lot honestly).

I do think that there's too much crying and whining about death though. But I suppose if you don't talk about that, there's not much else to talk about...

Regardless, it's a decent manga. I wouldn't highly recommend it, but it's a good read if you want to spend the time reading it. Wouldn't be a waste of time.
