Description
Yamato Keisuke, a promising freestyle swimmer, and Ninomiya Ami, a talented diver, are the offsprings of two rival families owners of confectionery shops. Two generations ago, Grandfather Ninomiya came up with an idea for an owl-shaped cake, but Grandfather Yamato quickly raised to the challenge and thought of a similar cake--but in Yamato's the owl had ears. Because they're priced the same, Yamato's extra ears were crucial, and that made the business of the Ninomiya confectionery suffer. Grandfather Ninomiya then fell ill worrying about his shop. Comfortable read and no long winded dialogues but really no ending...

I agree with jedinat on one count is that its like a silent movie with subtitles..though reading this I realize that other mangas have a sort of background music or something with them but I somehow relish the fact of less talk, makes it like a quiet not scribbly crowded manga like so many are, you actually can decipher the picture which is a huge relief after the congested today's shounen mangas and many shoujos too...but have to say the ending made me go, WTF! THAT'S IT !!

This is a great manga. Although, what I'm just verry disappointed with is the ending. Seriously, I thought H2 had a very open-ending but... this was just suprised me. I just really wish there was more closure...

Its just a typical adachi manga, cute, light, funny and touching...although it's so typical of his works, this one is still as addictive as his others works, and even though the pattern is there, you'll never tire of reading his works volume by volume until you finish it...
Ehhh...

I've heard a lot of good things about Adachi so I finally got around to reading this...
For some reason I didn't feel very connected with the characters... I felt like was like watching an anime with the sound off, just reading the subtitles...sort of....lol (Yes, I've read manga before... hundreds... and I usually "hear" them speaking as I read :-} )
Okay, maybe I'm talking out my ass. I happen to hate love triangles and and meandering hearts, and I'm tired of "dishonest" characters. It's cute in some cases but the seriousness of this manga doesn't make it fun.
(the random comedy wasn't too funny either... his art style doesn't really provide for it)
It's not really as bad as I make it out, but I won't read it again or go out of my way to recommend it.

My favourite Adachi title to date. It's very simple yet to the point. The couple's development is top notch and my favourite. The work isn't as sports-focused as Touch, H2 or Cross Game, but I like it this way.
I only wish that there was an epilogue or something...

Really good. Adachi does it again. He is one of the better mangakas out there.
Great characters. Funny and innovative. Story never gets stale. Good scenery is always a nice bonus

Story advances nicely and the mixture of romance and sports is better than in most of the others Adachi works.
One of those you should read

Katsu was the only Adachi work I've read completely before, so I'll use that as a comparison. I have to say that I prefer Rough, hence the higher score. There's a certain amount of parallels with Katsu, but I guess those critics should be blamed on the other work, since this came before.
Overall the story seems to flow better, and the side characters are A LOT more significant, which I prefer. I also believe that the heroine (AMI) is a stronger character in this work than in Katsu (Katsuki). She seems more tri-dimensional. Since there was no predefined attraction at the start of the work, the buildup has been more fun to follow.
Oh, and I notice significant art improvement from Vol 5 on.
Again, I wish the ending had more closure, and it does seem to leave me hanging. It should've had an epilogue chapter. That being said, I'm a lot more satisfied by the conclusion given because it seems a lot more appropriate in this work than in Katsu.
Unfortunately, I now suspect that I'll have to expect such types of conclusions in his other works, which is really the only flaw I find in Adachi's works.
So far, in ranking of appreciation (complete Adachi works only):
1- Rough
2- Katsu

This was the first adachi manga i ever read and i am now a big fan of his works. His story-telling is definitely top-notch.
Rough was such a great manga, it made me search out more of adachi's other works and i was never disappointed! This (and his other works) are must reads for any romance enthusiasts out there!!!
