currently one of my top favs

Story: I found that I enjoyed the story so much that I would reread the whole manga and the new chapters like every 3 months. I also felt it had some lord of the flies vibe, and love the whole surviving thing even if they are just kids and there r freaking dinosaurs and stuff. It really moved the plot forward and I never feel bored. I hate when mangas just drag out and chaps feel like its just fillers. I love how its a little dark...esp the new chps wit the doctor

Characters: Love the characters, esp the main dude. I always have a thing for the uncool guy who makes mistakes and then learns to become a guy worthy of being the main character. I felt that all the characters had dimension and also loved how even the characters that get killed off in a few chaps were distinctive. And its kinda hard to do that when you have so many characters (to kill).

Art: its ok, not OMG beatuiful like vampire knight or super detailed...wish there was more "depth" to the art work. But its pretty good. I'm a girl and their boobs annoy me a little...

Overall UBER AWSUM

DAMN GREAT! EDIT: bs

Pretty. Damn. Good.
Though it may be a tad unrealistic, considering the kids' ages and all, the plot TOTALLY makes up for it! Goddamn I read this series and I was totally MINDFUCKED. BRAINBANGED. WTF-WAS-GONNA-HAPPEN-NEXT feeling... Lmao. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED. IT HOOKED ME JUST FROM THE VERY FIRST CHAPTER! Bloody hell.. It explains a lot of knowledge and about human emotions in a very interesting way along with tactics and a lot more. Very creative story. Well deserved 10 from me. smile READ IT OR YOU REGRET IT KIENTS!!!

P.S. Im reading a lot about how "the art isnt good" blah blah... WHAT THE FOOK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! It takes so much fucking skill to draw those crazy creatures and shizzz!!! The characters arent bad either, sure Kouhei looks ugly for a supposedly 'hottest guy in school', but its not the art that should make you judge the manga... Why not read the first chapter? Itll take less that 10 mins of your time that you totally wont regret.

EDIT: The ending was completely rushed and left many plot holes in the story. Bullshit ending... It had so much potential too.. It got me all excited for nothing lol.

A must read manga

I read some reviews and got thrown off by the negatives. After a while I decided I'd give it a try since I felt like reading a survival manga, and 3 days and 138 chapters later I can't get enough of this series.

Every chapter is interesting with the creature attacks, exotic diseases, uncovering the mysteries surrounding the island, new encounters with survivors, and (obviously) trying to find a way back home. (Although I can't help wincing every time yet another woman is killed, it seems the author enjoys killing off women more than men.) Even though there's lots of seriousness in the manga there are chapters which are there for lighthearedness, which is a nice change of pace at times.

Even though it's not got the best artwork i've seen in a manga the art in the manga doesn't feel like it's lacking at all, and is definetly improving.

The characters are rememberable and personalities are well established, theres around 20 people I can think of off of the top of my head all with their own distinct personality, and there is clearly romantic developments in the manga (not like some manga where nothing will happen for over 100 chapters for the sake of dragging it out).

Lots of people are saying that the manga isn't very realistic but if you want more realism try a seinen title. but as far as a shounen title is concerned this is a very good one. I recommend reading this manga yourself and judging how good it is.

It has a very interesting plot, good characters, and it makes you want more and more(thats a key for me when i'm reading long manga), Also for the people who say it's unrealistic.... come on people manga aren't supposed to be realistic, manga are not real.

I dont like main char Akira, it's so stupid, the leader must be have good analysis thinking, but he even cannot fight but act so reckless. i think its better way to build champ first. and why cannot the group make a bow?

Basically what KrisKelvin said.

Unrealistic and cliche shounen content (for some people), but the mysterious situation they are in makes up for it. Read for the plot, not the animals or the girls. The plot development is really something.

can't expect much from a shounen

I think there are many who find this manga unrealistic and contains lotsa cliches. I guess that's just how shounen series are, since they're for teenagers.
Nevertheless Eden no Ori is quite interesting to read, because sometimes it can surprise you; you won't see it coming. But following these last chapters I think the manga is gradually becoming more boring and embarrassing. inappropriate lines in inappropriate times, stupid reactions in life-risking situations, stupid ideology wins the argument, and many more.
well as far as I'm concerned, we can't expect much from a shounen, this is also the reason why I'm more fond of seinen,

Okay, we're pretty far in the story here and while it is blatantly obvious that the airplane was carrying a freakin' dream team of red shirts and conveniently classmates super students. Even Mr. lame-ass-gets-the-girl(s) is a true leader who only shows his true power while outmaneuvering dinosaurs (note: there are no dinosaurs, really). Come on, this is totally a set up. My inner geologists (my parents -lol I ate them) are screaming at me and they're not screaming "Take out the garbage!" because that is my bruders job. I'm screaming "Google did it!" at the moment. Sentient Mushroom Head is just stupid enough to trust google maps.

Plot: Like I said, Google did it. Someone compared this to Lord of the Flies? This is almost nothing like Lord of the Flies and nothing to compare it to. Read a book. I think you'll find everything has been done so really good authors just do it well.

Characters: Nice to be able to remember them. I don't care about them, fine if they die, plot moves on. But I do know who they are/were. which is nice. I wish they would show more of the other group with the hot delinquent and his car keys and quarters... that guy is so cool. I wouldn't mind if it was just them but he is a nice foil. And the leader guy for the big group is cool too for once. Which is why HD is needed in the first place. Having him and leader guy together would draw attention away from leader guy but with no hot delinquent, leader guy would have no one to be better than.

Art: I just finished rereading Zippy Ziggy so I'm like "wth with these LAME reactions?!" Although besides everyone seeming to have facial expressions only for varying states of "I'm concerned~" its really nothing to be concerned~ about. A couple times I have thought to myself "lol, boobs don't work that way." On another note, I practically did backflips when the mangaka got their geology right. So easily pleased.

Btw, I'm bad at names so thats why I call maruma/marima/mikaela Sentient Mushroom Head and others other things. Sorry if there is any confusion. If it makes you feel better, I don't know what I'm talking about either.

I have my reasons. First, characteristically, like everyone said here, there's no way junior high school teenagers would have such excellent physical features such as tremendously big boobs or capable of bare-handedly fighting creatures that are 20 times bigger than their body. They are, mostly, kids. I don't think not even a ferocious, should-be-extremely dangerous giant 'ancient' bear could not kill the main protagonist in every possible way. I can't count how many times the main protagonists have encountered and avoided near-death experience, but I'm sure every count is substantially pointless. The characters are not left out of the shounen border, so the readers would often see many elements of naivety and innocence. Second, putting aside the interesting plot, the author seems rather want to introduce some 'ancient' animals in a more dramatic way by frequently setting up a dire situation in sequence where the animals would corner the characters, they fight back and overcome their fear, charismatically overpowering the enemy. Instead of displaying variety of extinct animals, the author seems only interested in those with life-threatening features such as Sabretooth tiger or Arctodus bear. Although, I found this is the only thing that carries the story in advance. Thirdly, the unnecessary youth-related tendencies like youth romance, extravagant sensual shots or inconsistent behavior and personality, largely contribute to its failure to convince the readers to sympathize with the characters. Looking just how 'lucky' the group is, I can't tell if they're really in some situation or still on vacation.
Interestingly, the advancing story, with addition of mysteries covering the island and theories that make up for most of the revealing truths, is somehow able to make me stick to it for a long time. The naive characters with their optimistic view on the events before their eyes are simply captivating, for I would want to know how they would end up at the end of the day. Personally, I think there would be some sort of twist or unprecedented set-up, although I can instinctively predict what this is all about. But so far, the story has never been dissatisfying enough to make me stop from following. No, it has nothing to do with the ecchi stuff. bigrazz

Its starts Ok, but then goes down hill

This is an ok manga but has some problems. I think its biggest strength is that it has some momentum. The characters have goals and they move towards them. This keeps the story moving forward. However, some of the characters are not very deep and are your cookie cut-out types with many cliched backgrounds.

The art starts off so-so but gets better and more consistent. As a survival story its ok, but could be better. It doesn't quite have the horror level that other stories have. In part this is because its still shounen, and the drama is not quite there. The ecchiness is sometimes just thrown in randomly and detracts from the story line. I mean its a dangerous place, but the girls in this story are constantly taking baths in rivers and streams etc. sometimes by themselves with no weapons. The anatomy of the girls is a bit ridiculous too as most of these characters are supposed to be in junior high (13-15yrs) but they are built like porn stars. Many are ultra-kick butt like the girl who is a nidan (2nd degree black belt) in karate, the delinquent who looks like he's in his 20s and is a genius badass, etc. Yet again many of them are supposed to be in junior high. Meanwhile, the adults come in various assortments such as: dumb, weaker, incompetent, cowardly, murderers or wannabe rapists. We also have some of the female adults that seem to be attracted to these children, which is just bad.

The story also suffers from the common shounen cliches, you know things that we've seen in hundreds of other manga like "must save everybody!" and "must protect my precious friends!" and so on. The male lead is your typical perky hero, who suffers numerous blows to the head which result in no real damage whereas other people in the story become seriously impaired. I guess his head is just harder.

There are some other things that bug me about the story, but I don't want to get too long winded and others have already mentioned some of them. Don't get me wrong the manga is not horrible and can be entertaining, but some of the shounen qualities I think actually drag it down. After reading about 80 chapters I would say it rates about a 7.
<------------------EDIT---------------->
Well I finished it and I have to say that I think it went a bit downhill. The smarter students stand around Akira the main protagonist giving info dumps which was kinda bad. It wasn't necessary to explain every single detail and there just should have been better ways to go about it. We get some lapses in thinking from the mangaka like when our hero leaps down a darkened shaft with no light but he can see the exit and the room he falls into when a few pages before another character was saying how dark it was and they had a flash light. A beastie that was hibernating but should have been dead due to lack of oxygen and other mistakes. More fan service is thrown in, a few plot lines are totally forgotten like the "friend" who was watching them at a distance and we never find out who the masked person is. What happens to those people? Then there is the real big discrepancies like
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
if they are all clones then how did they end up on the plane? Who put them there? Everyone else on the island had been dead for a long time.
So it doesn't make any sense how they ended up there. This is why it feels like the story is a bit incomplete and the ending a bit rushed. All in all disappointing.
