This series was a solid 9 in the first arc. But since then, it went downhill. Characters are erratic and regressed. You wouldn't miss much, since there wasn't much plot movement, since Hino seems to focus on sugar coated romance scenes. The art is also not as good, kinda "lazy" drawing.

Nothing has happened for the past 20 chapters.
I'm dropping this cause it's getting boring. All the characters do is walk around and act angsty.

I guess there are lots of people out there who would never read this manga simply because of the vampire hype, twilight and what not. In my opinion this manga doesn´t deserve to be put aside and condemned just because of that.
The story is dark, almost oppressive and very thought through, there are little twists and turns at every corner and I really enjoy reading those types of stories. I´m not a big fan of Hino´s artwork though. It´s too rough and undefined for my taste. There are too many lines and it gives one a very heavy feeling, almost as if the paper itself weighs more than it should.
I started reading this story right when it came out and stopped somewhere along the way, because it´s hard to keep on reading a story where there is just one chapter per month. Not something that kept me hooked, but I guess if you read it in one flow it can get really intense.

I was reluctant to start reading this at first since i had just finished reading (and not enjoying) twilight and was worried this was something similar. But i love hino matsuri's work so gave it a try. Boy was i wrong. I feel ashamed for comparing the two.The story, the character, and the art are all amazing! I read the first volume and went to the library the next day to get as many volumes as i could. Yuki is such an interesting heroine with a mysterious past. She's not weak or a cry baby at all like many shoujo manga female leads. I really love this story and eagerly waiting for the next chapter ^_^ Even when you understand Yuki and Kaname's past, their still a lot you want answered. Then theirs Zero sanity, not just level E, but the fact he hates vampires, even having to control his desire to just go hunt and kill anyone he finds. Great manga and definitely her best work so far ^_^

crashed and burned

seriously it was vk that got me into shoujo, it was a good manga at the beginning it reached its climax when yukki was re-turned into a vampire and then after that it crashed and burned. Hopefully it gets better and rises up again. Something similar happened with bleach, but it managed to rise up again. Hopefully Matsuri Hinamori has reached a small bump in the road but will get back on her feet. Support Japan.

I believe there're other shoujo mangas which deserve to be more famous than this crap. Back to the time when I didn't read that much manga, I thought VK was kinda good but now, I regret deeply for thinking like that.

There's nothing original about this manga but this isn't my main complaint here. After all, manga is full of cliche, it depends on the mankaga to make their manga more tolerable or special than the others. Unfortunately, VK doesn't fall into this category. Mediocre plot (not to mention super cheesy) with mediocre characters, even the art isn't that all unique.

I have lots of beefs with the 3 main characters but I shall start my rant with Kaname, my least favorite character of this series. I honestly can't see anything charming about him. He's just as creepy as that uncle (already forgot his name) who is obsessed with Juuri. Maybe if Yuuki had another male sibling who also fell in love with her, he'd kill him like that uncle did with Haruka. I found him arrogant, shallow and uninteresting. Girls may see his devotion to Yuuki is totally romantic but it's just like a god-damned obsession given how his love is portrayed. By no mean that's a healthy relationship.

Next, Yuuki. A flat character. I honestly have nothing to say about her since her character has no depth at all. Nothing for me to even bitch about it. Even for a main character in shoujo (which is usually your average girl), she is unbelievably plain.

Zero used to be a favorite of mine BUT he has changed dramatically after the incident at the academy. It's not that I didn't know he's in love with Yuuki before, I got that from day one but after that incident, the mangaka has made him become all lovesick which isn't funny at all.

I have to say that supporting characters are much more intriguing and lovable than the main characters. After all, the main characters in every manga, be it shounen or shoujo, often follow the same formula (with very few exceptions) so imo, they're the most boring of the entire cast. Supporting characters are what gives depth to a manga.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except shoujo fans. I gave this a 3, only for some characters I like.

I really love this manga and everything (twilight cannot compare to the sheer awesumness of this manga) but... I am going to have to put it on hold for now. The plot is going nowhere and the charaters recently are ticking me off.

I dropped this after
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Kaname and Yuuki started living together
but I picked it up again from where I left off and I have to say it is getting good! The only problem is that it leaves you with a "heavy feeling" like someone mentioned below but I guess that is acceptable due to the fact that it is a Tragedy manga.

I love what this manga has become. wink

And I think what we are seeing in vol 10+ is the true form of Vampire Knight, Yuuki has finally become a character I can get emotionally invensted in, now that she's acting more grown up, but that might just be because I'm an adult myself. xD
This is an awfully complicated manga though, so if you're expecting a standard shojou with love triagles and a twist of vampires, then this manga is nor for you. It's dark and the characters develop in ways you might not be happy with, I for one love it. And I'm looking forward to see how it all ends. : )

(beware of SPOILERSsmile i used to love this manga but its turned really confusing and boring. all the characters have changed, kaname keeps acting mysterious and making choices for yuuki, and claiming he is doing it for love. all the while just doing what he wants and abandoning her and only taking that ruka chick that has the hots for him. yuuki is still useless and following after people instead of just doing her own thing and standing on her own. and now the newest villain is a woman that has the hots for other women which is fine in yuri manga and i have nothing against lesbians, but see some girl treating other women as her slaves is creeping me out. thats it for vampire knight for me!
