I was so impressed by this manga... for the first few volumes.

But magic "solar" hands and ridiculous reactions have ruined it for me. I like cooking mangas and the bread making techniques in the beginning were pretty good and accurate but afterwards...

Falls apart as it goes along

I have a great love for bread and pastry so I delved into Yakitate!! Japan with excitement. The first 5/6 volumes a terrific with a great combination of mouthwatering bread, a unique bread tournament and endearing characters. It then fell apart when the team made the trek to the Monaco Cup. I felt that Kawachi had a lot of potential as a character but the author messed it up and reduced him to a mere comical sidekick to Azuma. In fact, a lot of characters were left in the dust as the story progressed. And the main antagonist for the first half of the series fails to provide for sufficient suspense and intrigue. The bread-making techniques also grow more and more fantastic through the series and by the end of Volume 13 I had resigned to myself that there indeed existed a !magical! yeast as well as !Triple!Super!Zion! "solar" hands that could make bread in the space of 1 panel. I recommend for people who are interested in this manga to only read up to the end of the first arc and save yourself from boredom.

Odd, to say the least.

Yakitate!! Japan is one of the oddest of the long-running shounen manga that has ever competed serialization. Occasionally hilarious, and occasionally drab, but on the whole it does manage to be very unique in many respects, and I'm certain that the author had a decent time writing it.

Basically, it just suffers from inconsistency (though I suppose an argument can be made for this aspect as an intentionality). It's only genuinely funny about 50% of the time, and without a higher percentage it just becomes too difficult to give it full attention. Still, it merits a half-decent rating for the moments that it does get exactly right.

As always some manga just go downhill from what was a normal cooking manga with exaggerated reactions to just...outrageous and unrealistic ones. While this may humour a specific audience, this just didn't work out for me.

Gets stupid fast

At first, I found the overjoyed reactions over the bread (yes, over bread) kinda funny. But that lasted about 4 chapters. Then, it just keeps getting weirder and weirder and by volume 4, the stupidity is just way out of hand. I'm embarrassed to read it. The unnecessary drama and embarrassingly stupid dialog actually makes me wince and roll my eyes.

I don't like any of the characters in this manga. And that's hard to do, considering how many characters there are. They're all just idiotic, overly dramatic, and flat. I can't relate to any of them.

And the tone of the manga is just all over the place. One moment, you have a guy screaming about bread and acting like a clown, and then the next thing you know, some girls are crying over their stupid family drama, which has nothing to do with the plot. My god, it's annoying. There is just no balance! I can't even take it seriously when the drama comes up. It's just too stupid.

I'm giving this a 4, and that's generous.

Too Long

The manga was at first fresh and amusing. However as time went on, and more volumes were read, what was at first amusing and fun, became dumb and stupid. The challenges became predictable and boring. Honestly, this story would have been great had it been kept between 6 and 8 volumes. After that, it just stops being fun. Read the first few volumes, then wait til the final volume is scanalated and read that. You won't have missed anything.

Yakitate japan is a hilarious addicting manga and i highly recommend everyone to read it. Now on the other hand i also have to warn people to not watch the anime. The anime has to be one of the worst things i have ever watched making me furious at how bad, i mean BAD, at the remake of this great and flavorful series. Do Not under any circumstance watch the anime! It's like "Prince of Tennis" for those of you who are fans...manga is great but anime was a flop...yup,yup

Ok time to comment one manga that I never believed I would even read. I mean its about a baker.. GTO was the first "job" manga I have read (Actually first watched the anime) and I found it great and refreshing presenting a teacher many of us would love to have (at least thats what I believe) Actually it was not that weird since school life is even a genre if you think about it. The second story that was about jobs that I watched (since it was an anime) was comic party and it was about manga creators and how hard they have it making the manga for us (it was the one that had no "magic" parts). And the third one is this.

I never believed I would stick so much with this manga. It did not even take much time to get me hooked and want to see what will happen when I read the next page. Somehow the creator of this one made something like magic. I just could not have enough. Unlike other manga that I loved this one totally sucked me in from the first second. I got truly mesmerized because I can;lt explain how else I would keep reading a manga that talks about a super baker. Well I have read the first 14 Volumes in one go (not in one day just kept reading everyday a part till I reached V15) <MAJOR SPOILER!>
Spoiler (highlight to view)
and I gave up only as soon as I finished Volume 14 which was the volume that the hero defeats a final "boss" in a cooking contest and thus after volume 14 its like a new story begins. I felt like the new "season" starts after that. So I am waiting till the 26th episode will be translated so I can read the rest of them.
<MAJOR SPOILER!>

Well I love this manga and I suggest it. It is really well made and it somehow makes you like it. I am thinking the next job story I will read will be bartender but seems the manga is not popular much since only 1 chapter is translated. We shall see I guess. I just hope the 5 remaining volumes will be scanlated soon T.T
