Boring
by Orionthehunter

Rating: 2.0  / 10.0
I used to read this every month a few years back hoping to see something happen, and oh boy nothing did. That's the major problem with this story. Things happen, but nothing truly eventful. There's no stakes, no major issues, there's not even a relationship any more. A long distance relationship is hard to make work, even harder to write, and this manga is the perfect example of just that.

In terms of characters, I really liked the leads at first. Then there were too many side characters added, and slowly, the leads became way too boring. Heck the asshole prince at the start of the story is somehow redeemed. Like, if you need to add love rivals to this kind of story, you're showing why the leads should just break up, because clearly they're not in the right time or place to be dating.

Trying to achieve your goals isn't the problem. People in real relationships have those as well. They also know how to work together for those goals. These two leads honestly work better separated. I picked it up today again to see what I had missed, and there wasn't anything interesting in the story to keep me motivated. Even the rare chapters when those two are reunited feel like a drag. They no longer seem to have any chemistry.

Dropped.
Maybe I'll pick it up again once it's complete/axed to see if it deserves a better rating, but as of now, I don't have anything positive to say about this.

Why are people disappointed about Zen's and Shirayuki's status anyway. The complaints about the recent story arcs being boring and dragged out, i get it, though i personally still like it. I like it when the story revolves around its world and not the other way around. But the complaints about the main couple being separated? like huh? I guess you just want the teetee wholesome fuwafuwa romance moments, but hey, Zen and Shirayuki have their own aspirations as well. Isn't that amazing? two people working hard and full of aspirations and dreams, and both towards the same goal even. The respectable and capable prince to stand up for his commoner heroine, and the heroine who strives to be better at her career and get more experience and respect enough to stay by zen's side.

I cant believe people disliked that. The shoujo brainrot is actually real.

Y'all really need to stop trashing on one of the few shojou mangas featuring a healthy relationship. Yes it started off all nice and fluffy and with minor incidents surrounding the protagonists but those were to strengthen the foundations of their relationship if anything else. The dude's a prince, OF COURSE he can't be around her all the time, and Shirayuki is a hard working young woman looking to take her career further and make herself experienced and powerful enough to stay by Zen's side, without causing too much of a ruckus. Growth comes only when you step outside your comfort zones, obviously for them that meant walking separate paths on the same journey that lead to a common destination. Zen grows as a prince who can be respectable and capable enough to govern parts of a country AND stand up for his non-royal girlfriend when the time comes to protect her when they wish to be with each other. Izana sending Shirayuki on the task of introducing the flower to the knights was OBVIOUSLY his way of saying girl knows how to move people, go move em and get their backup like you moved Raj and you can stay by Zen's side a lil easier.

Why is this so difficult to understand? Changes like this don't happen overnight, it takes time and sacrifices from people. It makes no sense where things will end happily ever after for them if they had stayed in the same place the whole time. All this separation, doing their own things, meeting up very rarely, it's all part of a long distance relationship, which is essentially what they're in, right? And about Obi, he's a mysterious character, and I know that people don't like the screen time he gets with Shirayuki while Zen is so far away AND TRUST ME I'VE GRITTED MY TEETH FAR TOO MANY TIMES AS WELL, but they've been in the same place for over two years now. If Obi wanted to make a move and absolutely couldn't hold himself back, it would've happened by now. I don't see a romantic future with Shirayuki for Obi yet.(and I hope I don't because if you hurt Zen I'm coming for you, author-san)

Now about the lack of romance, yes there isn't enough. The flower research thing wasn't the most entertaining stuff to read, agreed, but it was necessary to show that Zen and Shirayuki had things in their life that wasn't just the other person. Could it have been a little shorter? Yeah, I guess so, yes, but it was more realistic to make it this long. After all, it's two years of the characters lives and you can only do so many time-skips before that gets annoying. I do admit that this probably isn't how lovers staying apart deal with not seeing each other, I wish there had been a TAD more sighing and pining, because sometimes I felt like Shirayuki was strangely fine with not being able to see Zen...and then I realize that's probably just what she's like. Even in the beginning, she was late to realize her feelings, faints at the smallest show of affections etc and it's probably a part of her personality to not dwell on it too much and move on. Plus they seem to always be writing letters to each other. Of course, I do hope for the focus to shift a little more on their relationship because as nice as this separation thing is for them, it's also important to show how a relationship progresses under such conditions of duress because the parties involved ALWAYS being optimistic and moving forward...is a little unrealistic.

Anywho, that's my 2 cents. Give it time. Ultimately, it's the author's personal creation, it's her artistic liberty to take the characters forward the way she wants. As a fan I want to support her because no matter what happens, I'll always be thankful for giving people a refreshing, healthier relationship between two people, and a story that's not filled with fan-service and meaningless fluff, but something a little more in touch with reality.

As said previously, I think that people expected more romance due to the anime adaptation.
For the comparison with Akatsuki no Yona, I think that Akatsuki no Yona manages to tell a story in a more interesting way.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
So even if it hasn't much progress in the romance side, the evolution of Yona and what she will do regarding her current situation is the main focus. But maybe it's because it has more action and the issues are more important?

And indeed Shoujo is not Romance, personnally I had some difficulty to keep an interest to Akagami no Shirayukihime. It is one case where the anime adaptation does a better job than the manga itself (in my opinion again).

If you want a fluffy shoujo brainrot romance, this isn't your stop, get off and go to the reincarnation isekai section or whatever. I assume most of the people who've come to read this in recent years have come from the anime and want more of that.

I've seen a lot of recent comments saying it's become bad, or that it gets dragged out too long, or that they dont know where the story seems to be going in the titles, but most of them are mainly complaints about how the main character and her love interest havent had much time together in recent chapters.

Romance isnt the only genre listed. It's not trying to be a fluffy cute romance, it's about Shirayuki and the challenges she faces at her position as a court pharmacist while trying to become worthy of being by Zen's side. There doesn't seem to be an underlying plot that goes through several arcs, but there is a clear end goal.

If I were to list any complaints that other people may have other than these, it may get a little wordy with the dialogue at times (in a few arcs they tend to use a lot of technical terms and along the line some names and stuff that you need to remember a little) but it's never really too dull. You can compare it to Akatsuki no Yona, perhaps a little more slow paced but just as amazing nonetheless (imo at least).

The absence of the male lead in recent chapters is not bad writing, nor is it done to pad the series out – as I mentioned earlier, it's about Shirayuki. It's not a forced situation- in fact, it makes quite a lot of sense.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I'd be much more annoyed if Shirayuki stayed in the castle for no reason other than to stick to Zen (she can't even be of service to him there! it's not like she's an aid or sth- she's a pharmacist for crying out loud!). It makes much more sense for her to choose to further her career as a pharmacist/researcher helping Ryuu in Lyrias, where she can actually be of more use and where she can find a purpose for herself and become worthy of standing by Zen's side in the future.
If you're not getting your fluffy fanservice then that doesn't mean it's bad, it just means you're not getting your fluffy fanservice.

Shoujo ≠ Romance. Shoujo just means that it's intended for a female audience, and probably has a female protagonist.

If you're in for well written story arcs and relationships with beautiful illustrations, this is your stop.
If you're here solely for some fluffy heart-throbbing romance and nothing more, I suggest you try something else.

Draggy and boring
by Hanna sj
September 26th, 2020, 8:41am
Rating: N/A
I've been following this manga since 2009 now its almost 11 years start up great bit getting more draggy and boring in recent years. Storyline has been stuck at the same plot around 3 years. Mangaka tries hard to make Shirayuki the ultimate female lead who can do anything on her own but backfired. All readers have known how independent and good Shirayuki is since around 4 years ago. Too many new characters and filler plots introduced making this series its original charms which anyone cannot deny is the dynamic between Zen and Shirayuki. Nowadays Zen become just a support character with forefront and focus plot is around Shirayuki-Obi which is boring to say the least. Obi should have take a seat back, its boring having to see him in each chapter around Shirayuki in each chapter. Zen-Shirayuki scene nows have just become a click-bait for longtime followers to keep on reading and anticipating their scenes when its their scene is just crumble. I'm reading it because its a shoujo and im a shoujo fan, so i expect romance. Should have changed this tp slice of life/seinen. Everytime a new chapter came out i was like "tell me why is the mangaka still continuing on this series again? " Useless plot with useless storyline. Should have ended it during its glory stage years ago. Major disappointment.

used to be so much better

My comment title says it all. This story used to be so charming, with nice ambiance and art, likeable characters, and a story that was fairly interesting. The best thing about this story is the cute but pure romance between Shirayuki and Zen. It's nice reading about healthy relationships where the couple respect and love each other. It's so rare in shoujo, and the unique, pretty, and clean art only boosts this story's fluffy pureness.

Then the story becomes stale and dragged out. Recent arcs have too much story time put on Shirayuki doing academic research (which is quite boring, honestly, after several volumes of it (which takes years for the mangaka to make), and I read this for entertainment, not the work I have to do in real life). Compared to the first few story arcs, which were exciting with an interesting and unique plot, the current arcs really pale in comparison. It's derailed into a slice of life that's pretty dull.

There's also not enough interesting character interaction happening. And by that, I mean our main couple don't even get to see each other for months! This translates to several volumes of chapters with them being apart, which is equivalent to years of waiting in the readers' real world. The main issue is that the charm of this story is Zen and Shirayuki's interactions with each other, which lasted several story arcs in the beginning. Their romance took centre stage, so it gives hope for readers to see more of that, but recent arcs fail to deliver on that aspect.

Obi and Shirayuki also have way too much screen time together in the recent arcs. I get the feeling the author wants to nurture second-male-lead syndrome in the readers, but that's the author setting a writing trap for herself (imho). I also like Obi's character so I don't want to see him stuck in this unrequited love situation for 15 years and counting (2006-2021). Shirayuki and Zen are already set in stone as the lovely main couple in the story, so Obi being with Shirayuki is only going to happen if:

a) Shirayuki has a change of heart (unlikely),
or
b) Zen dies and Shirayuki moves on and falls for Obi (which isn't likely either).

The chances of Shirayuki having a change of heart is as likely as cats turning into dogs since that's not the character profile the author set up for her (so it's not going to happen unless her character does a 180). And if it does happen, it will be seen as cheating, which is out of sync with her personality, and the readers are not going to like the cheating or change in character. Besides, this manga's genre isn't the angsty drama type so it doesn't make sense to go there either, plot-wise.

In short, watching Obi and Shirayuki having so much screen time together without Zen is like watching sizzling meat never becoming fully cooked (and this applies to both ships, whether you ship Shirayuki with Zen or with Obi). This is happening for years now in real time, so readers are going to feel frustrated with this development (or lack thereof) when all they have in the meantime is stale dry research to read about. It gives the impression the author wants to keep milking this story. I don't fault the author for doing this though. This story is the author's livelihood since it has a big readership, which means $$ for the author. And that's fine. I just don't like the author not having better writing skills when she needs to stretch the story out to make it last a few more years. Because the initial readership is not going to last if she keeps this up.

I've been reading this since 2013 so recent developments are quite disappointing after so much waiting. I'll probably just read the ending (and that would likely be years away from now, at the rate the mangaka is making this (T_T)
This story went from 9/10 to 7/10 but I'll wait for that ending to adjust my rating.

I've been following this series for 4 years now, the chapter's started amazing, but now? I really don't know what's akizuki (author) planning to do, I've loved this series so much, but ive been disappointed so many times and waiting for shirayuki and zen to meet Everytime was exciting at first but then turned out to be stressful, the series that started amazing is getting boring and that really makes me sad, there is so much potential and many things that can happen but all I see in every chapter is shirayuki doing everyday stuff and no development between her and zen, I've been waiting since 2017 for something fresh but still nothing new or too interesting… Still it's worth reading!
