I have three genres that I think are relevant and should be added to the list of genres in the database:
Slice of Life - just excerpts of life or about regular days of people's lives; anecdotes (examples: Yokohama Kaidishi Kikou, Yotsubato)
Police - revolves strictly around police life, detectives, and such (examples: Rose Hip Rose, You're Under Arrest)
Military - war, war machines and such; as well as military uniforms and weapons (examples: Red Prowling Devil, Gundam)
So, let's hear what everyone else has to say about these genres. Do you second my opinions/suggestions or do you think they suck? Leave feedback here so the admins can see whether we all agree or not.

I agree on Slice of Life. Not sure about the other two. They may be a bit too specific to qualify as genres.

Isn't genderbender a bit esoteric?

Slice of life is alright as a genre, but wouldn't some of your description for Military fall under Mecha? Gundam being a prime example. I'm iffy about the genre Police as well. As it is with novels, most of your description would fall under Mystery. Books have Suspense, and they have Mystery.
Police is none so much a genre as it is a subject.

I agree with Kraust, the other two dig a tad too deep into specificity(sp?) imo

I don't think you should consider Police, as alot of people have said it's a little TOO specific, but slice of life would definitely work.
Military, I'm sure it already has a general gnere for that (or atleast on some other boards)

Okay, so it seems like everyone is okay with Slice of Life but not the other two. So those can be thrown out. Meanwhile, I have another to suggest:
Harem - usually tons of girls around one main male character (example: Love Hina)
What do you think?

Alright, so everyone seems to agree on Slice of Life. Anyone have a better, more complete description for it?

How about:
"As the name suggests, this genre represents day-to-day tribulations of one/many character(s). These challenges/events could technically happen in real life and are often -if not all the time- set in the present timeline in a world that mirrors our own."
Or if you prefer web-definitions (from answers.com):
slice of life
n., pl. slices of life.
An episode of actual experience represented realistically and with little alteration in a dramatic, fictional, or journalistic work.
Doh, can't win against the web
The harem genre could be nice. However if it's implemented it should be mutually exclusive to the romance genre since it always (to my knowledge, at least) implies it. That way would allow people to search for non-harem-ish romances. Imo.

Slice of Life: A story revolving around the events of everyday life? I'd say it revolves around ordinary people, but in a lot of mangas the characters seem to be unique in order to make up for the fact that the story is about events that would not, by themselves, interest the reader.

I would agree with harem for the mere fact that I can filter it out once you implement that option in.
