I'm also curious to how people prefer narratives that, like some SFXs, are imprinted over the art or are an integral part of the artwork. Should those be treated on the margins as well? Again, I kinda have an idea how people will respond, but...

Seriously, from a translator's point of view, just changing the text from Japanese to English ALREADY loses the "effect of the original". Whenever you translate ANYTHING to another language, you lose the effect of the original. Unless one can get in the mind-frame of the original language and culture, there will be something amiss.

You make an interesting point here that I really hadn't thought about. I guess my thought would be to preserve the original artwork as much as possible. Unfortunately I, and I'm guessing the majority of the people on this site, cannot read Japanese, so translating the dialogue is kinda a necessity, but since the SFX generally are not really vital to the story, they fall to a lower importance in people's minds in terms of changing the artwork.

I prefer them left alone. It's easier on editors and also, we should at least keep the sfx. It's not that hard to learn all 138 of the kana characters...besides, I prefer the "sounds" rather than the "action"

judge for yourself -_- :
