Count calories. No matter what any of those diet ads say, cutting calories is the number one key to losing weight. You can exercise all you want, and if you aren't eating less than you burn you won't lose weight.
Write down every single thing you eat with its calorie content. Don't let yourself slip up. Make yourself a limit and if you go over it, be ashamed of yourself. Some people say the key to weight loss is happiness and self-confidence, but come on. If you were really confident about your appearance you wouldn't be trying to lose weight at all.
First of all, exercise builds muscle, and muscle burns calories even at rest - so eating fewer calories AND exercising will be much more effective than just eating fewer calories.
Second, how the heck do you count calories on EVERYTHING? Maybe I just eat weird, maybe I cook more than most, but I just don't see how people can keep track of every calorie they eat. If I'm making something, I taste it while I'm cooking. I know the calories add up, but really, do y'all figure the calories on 1/2 tsp. of muffin batter, three noodles (eaten to test if they're done yet), a slice of carrot eaten while cutting them, the last canned peach piece, etc.?
Third, looks are not the only reason for weight loss, health is also a factor. A person can be happy & confident but have a health condition that makes losing weight very important. It may be less common than losing weight for looks, but it's definitely a valid reason.
