Oh wow, this thread is fantastic. I have to admit I am taken aback to discover the existence of a Twilight manga, but I also learned about that Jeeves and Wooster manga, so I guess it all balances out. (Someday I will read the hell out of that thing.)

Unfortunately, I don't have anything to contribute, except maybe Matantei Loki, which is a detective series staring the Nordic Gods, who are living in modern day Japan. Loki is the hero, and Odin is a villain (and that irritates me every time I think about it). And Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle is based off of a young adult book.

Man, if we included western comics as well, I might be of more use. Like, for example, Robert Crumb's Genesis came out not too long ago and it looks amazing. But, I think that's all I got, so I suppose I will go back into the shadows and lurk some more. Keep up the good work guys.

This thread is fantastic. I keep searching for books that (I hope) may have possibly been made into a manga. I forgot all about Howl's Moving Castle. I wrote a paper comparing the novel and the film for my Children's Lit class final last year.

Shin Takarazima - Inspired by Treasure Island
Koutetsu Sangokushi - Adapted from the classic Chinese historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Wendy - Peter Pan.

Not quite a "literary classic," but I figured it was worth mentioning: Iljimae - a manhwa based on the folklore of Robin Hood.

It's too bad that many of the ones mentioned are not scanlated and my attempts to translate anything takes me ages.

Because of this thread, I have all the Animated Classics of Japanese Literature on queue in Netflix. laugh Hopefully they won't be a disappointment.

Speaking of Peter Pan, there is of course a floomfy old shoujo based directly on it. There's also a few anime adaptations of the story. Almost every major piece of literature has an anime adaptation, though, and not just by WMT. I just recently found a torrent for an old English dub of the Frankenstein anime. XD

Speaking of Frankenstein: Embalming - The Another Tale of Frankenstein Wagatomo Frankenstein

I am quite pleased that this greatest of request threads has grown to the fourth page. And I'm going to celebrate by adding some more things I've found and greatly stretching the definition of "literary classic".

Nariagari - Yazawa Eikichi Monogatari Most definitely not a literary classic, but a manga adaptation of that singer guy's autobiography... XD
Koutetsu Sangokushi
Rome no Kyuujitsu Not even a book at all, but a 1960s shoujo manga of Roman Holiday that I must mention! eek <3<3<3
Ode to Gallantry
The Beauty in the Haunted Temple
Vagabond
Silver (FUJITA Kazuko)
Aries
Das Kapital Lolwut?
Kamen no Romanesque Look, it's another adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons! And this one's been partially scanlated!

This thread is awesome biggrin

I don't think anyone posted Saiyuki. It's based on the Chinese classic, Journey to the West. There's an anime version as well.

HOLY FRACK IS THERE A KARL MARX MANGA?!?! eek

Akari Mizunashi-sama, as usual, you really do bring it. eyes

With all these amazing mangas, I'm starting to think that I (or somebody else lol) should set up a scanlation group JUST for working on literary classics.

But sadly I have no time right now... sad Maybe next year, once I'm a little freer? Lol if anyone wants to preempt me and form a group like that earlier, please to be goin' right ahead. biggrin

Perhaps collecting the suggestions in the first post would have helped to prevent the numerous double entries...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Based on Nansou Satomi Hakkenden, the longest story of Japanese classics, written by Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848):

1) anime:

The Hakkenden/The Hakkenden: Shin Shou OVA (I love these series);

Shin Hakkenden TV - an overly modified version of the original story;

2) manga:

Hakkenden (AOMATA Pinku) - appears to be the first and the most close to the novel Dog Warriors manga series;

Satomi Hakkenden - a parody;

Hakkenden - Touhou Hakken Ibun - a very loose adaptation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saiyuukiden Daienou - also loosely based on Journey to the West and seems to be much more brutal than the novel xD

Romeo x Juliet Can't believe no one mentioned this one but this is only loosely based off of Romeo and Juliet. The names and characters are the same but the relationships are different. Main focus is R x J romance of course.
