Well, I've just read 6 Shoujo one-shots..

And apparantly the guy that the girl has feeling for was 1 out of 6 cases older than her, another 2 out of 6 cases the same age as her, and the other 3 out of 6 he was younger than her.. To be more specific, one year younger..

And well, I was just wondering if that was kind of the 'hype' in Shoujo.. That the guy is younger by one year or so..

I know,.. it's a silly question.. laugh

But maybe it's because they're one-shots..confused I don't know..

These were the ones I read, btw..

Guy was older..
My 1/3 Boyfriend

Guy was of the same age..
Akiiro Bousou Biyori
99% Love

Guys were younger, by one year..
Angel Love Song
After School
Ah! My Darling Caramel Boy

I haven't read any of those...I dunno, maybe in those manga the women were made to have more nurturing roles?

Well anyway, 6 stories can hardly make for good statistics...^^; Could be just the randomness of it all.

As for my own experience...out of the 15 shoujo mangas I've translated, 10 of them had the couple in the same age, and 5 of the manga had the boy slightly older than the girl (2 of the 5 actually had the guy more than 5 years older than the girl). I've never translated a manga wherein the boy was older.

*edit* my statistics:
Mangas I've done where the guy was older:
Blue Ramun
Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru
Honey Hunt
It's Not Like That Darling
Rasetsu no hana

Where the couple was the same age:
Full House Kiss (I'm not sure about this one. Could be that the guy is around a year older)
Gekka no Kimi
Grand Sun
Hatsumei Princess
Moshikashite Vampire
Ren Ai Cupid
Special A
Tenjou no Kajitsu
Tenshi na Konamaiki
W Juliet II

Shoujo I've done with no real couple:
Ludwig Kakumei

Soo...mine's like 10-5-1.

Yeah, I know.. bigrazz But I don't read a lot of Shoujo.. So I thought that that could be more common than the others.. laugh

Nope, they didn't have nurturing roles.. biggrin They were pretty much in love with those guys.. But they were only like one year younger.. So it isn't that big of a deal.. Like a 16-year old boy with a 17-year old girl..

Apparantly from your experience, there aren't a lot of them.. eek

Humm... *looks at list, over 100 shoujo manga* Well, I have to say that I rarely come across shoujo where lad is younger than lassie. Usually he's older or they are the same age. Most of the shoujo manga out there has the same age/older male pair, I think.

*looks at her lists, over 300 shoujo manga* <- that makes me a freakin' expert

Usually they're the same age.
older guy - like 15 %
older girl - like 10 %

It's more accepted that the guy is the same age or older. After all, in real life, you don't see very many couples in which the girl is older. And of the ones you do, they were almost always childhood friends, like in Atashi no Caramel Boy.

having a very large shoujo collection on my comp i'd say for the most part guys the same age, then guys older, and last is younger guys.

Usually they are the same age I find, or an upper classman. The girl is rarely older in ongoing series.

I just sort of realized this as I was reading this topic, but I think the younger guy-older girl pairings tend to occur more often in oneshots than in longer series. *starts to look at her lists than gives up* I can think of several oneshot plots that involve younger guys but can only come up with one series that has a younger guy (I know there's more but I'm not going through all 1000+ shoujo titles on my lists).
EDIT: Not an hour after I posted this, I started a series with a younger guy-older girl pairing...

I'd rather read them being the same age...I don't like huge age differences...like the guy being way younger...or the guy being way older...just being the same age or only an age different of 1-2 years are the types I like reading about. ^__^

Agreed. And in smut, for some reason none but they usually are the same age, or one year age difference, at least in school-life setting bigrazz
