Hi, I am going to be a History teacher soon, and thought it would be interesting to show a few animes to my students. I am looking for (mostly) Historically accurate anime, we all know its not always exactly, it would be boring if it was. It can have to do with any time frame and any country as long as it has historical accuracy towards that country and time.
It can be a movie or series, anywhere from rated PG to MA, I can edit out nudity later.
I am also personally interested in manga like this but please try to think of anime first.
Sorry in advance if this forum is only for Manga.

I don't know many anime, bu if manga then these might be fit
Cesare
Emma
Otoyomegatari
Shigurui: lots of violence, but it shows the life of samurai accurately (same with Vagabond)

I second Grave of the fireflies. I made a class I was subbing for watch it (media, not history unfortunately). Made a huge impact - they still bring it up when I run into any of the students now - nearly a decade later.

Thanks for the quick replies, didn't think they'd come this quickly. I'll check all of the suggestions out.
Apparently though Grave Of The Fireflies was a critical hit, so i'll definitely watch that.

well I would like to recommend Spice and Wolf... but you would have to carefully choose the scenes... some of them are not for kids xD, nothing explicit though
theme: medieval times, trader/trading system
note: it's not based on historical facts, it only explains how trading worked at that time, (afaik all names of towns etc. are not real)

I want to say Hetalia or hakuouki, but I'm not sure if its historically accurate.
Hetalia is mostly based on trivia, while in hakuouki, the name, time of event, and time of death of the character is the accurate.

Rose of Versailles is accurate in events leading up to the French Revolution, but has some original characters added to the plot. It's a classic.

The 1st Kenshin movie has alot of true historical elements. Not suitable for under 16 though. I wouldnt say Grave of the Fireflies is suitable for below junior in HS either.

Not an anime, but Kaze Hikaru.
I mean, apart from the part where there's a girl in the Shinsengumi, it is ridiculously historically accurate. The author has obviously done so much research, down to the myriad hair styles of the era, down to family crests, down to the cultural differences between regions of the time. While she changes a few minor things, she explains why in the author notes at the end of the book.
As for Hakuouki, there is a very strong fantasy/supernatural element there so that does warp the accuracy. I would cast quite a lot of doubt on it being sufficiently historically accurate. However, the shinsengumi do get a lot of anime so there is probably one out there more focused on the historical facts.
