I like a good romance. Shoujo is one of my favorite categories, despite being neither female nor teenaged. There's something so satisfying about everything working out for a good couple in the end.
What series have done a good job of combining real romance with smut (or even ecchi)? Nana to Kaoru is a great combination but doesn't seem to be leading to a good romance resolution. What have you liked in the not-so-common overlap between these genres?

I'm not sure about good smut romances (AIHARA Miki's 5-ji kara 9-ji made maybe?) but I know some series with the sort of "relationship-ecchi" (not fanservice!) you're looking for:
Kanojo wa Sore o Gaman Dekinai by IWASHITA Shigeyuki is a good example for a well-executed erotic relationship which incorporates the ecchi part into the plot.
TANAKA Yutaka's Itoshi no Kana
The peaceful slice of life about a wholesome couple and reflections on life and death - the mangaka of Ai-Ren knows how to keep both of them in a fragile balance. Each time the focus shifts back and forth between heart-warming everyday activities and poignant suicide scenes, the reader gains a deeper understanding of love, life and their true value.
Usotsuki Paradox by SATOU Nanki/ KIZUKI Akira
A thought-provoking story about love, fidelity and the difficulty to make the right decision. The subject is quite heavy and justifiably dramatic, so don't expect everything to work out for "the couple" (whoever you may be rooting for). However, if you're still willing to take a look, it might deliver you some rare insights into the reality of infidelity.
HISAKA Mika's Megane no Hito
A collection of short stories about different expectations in a relationship. Calm slice of life from both perspectives.
By the way, I don't think a good romance and ecchi/smut should be treated as separate subjects. After all they are both aspects of love for most people (asexuals excluded). This ideal of a "pure love" without any sexual attachment is something created by cultural and/or religious beliefs but it's neither healthy nor natural (cf. MORIE Satoshi's Hakuji). So I appreciate it when a mangaka has the heart to stand up to the prevalent ideal and portrays a real, wholesome relationship including the complexity of love and lust.

- Otoyomegatari by MORI Kaoru
- Gangsta. by Kohske
- Seishun Kouryakuhon by AKIZUKI Sorata

Hetakoi is one of my favorites. It's by NAKANO Junko, female authors in this genre are always a plus for me.
Although I am a little sad that she passed away last year, she was just 45.

Hetakoi - I agree with you. Already read it, and liked it a lot.
Usostuki Paradox had been on my dead list for some time. I'd been watching the wrong site for releases, and not seen one since 23. Thanks for the reminder.
Itoshi no Kana I read last week. I liked it more than I had expected. So I'm looking forward to trying the others on your list.
Others to be tried soon/

I just finished Dance Till Tomorrow. For me, the end was a slap in the face - the last three chapters brought it to an end with no respect for the preceding story line. The real world might have gone that way, but it ruint the story for me.
The rest of it was kinda cute.
