I am looking for manga where the main character (or at least a major supporting character) has powers connected with calligraphy (either writing or drawing).

One example (for writing) is something like Nanami (Kamisama Hajimemashita)'s ability to change the property of something by writing words on talismans.

Another example would be an artist who can make drawings come to life (I think I've seen something like this before, but can't quite recall where). There was also that antagonist in Nurarihyon no Mago whose drawings could affect the real world.

The onmyouji tag produces some results (it's a concept similar to shikigami, but not quite the same), but I'm interested to find more! biggrin

Looking forward to recommendations! Thanks for your help!

There was an episode in Mushishi where the things someone wrote came to life... I'd assume it's in the manga too...

In Kamichu!, the protagonist becomes a god and like Nanami her written words have power... I've not read the manga though--it was based on the anime and is apparently pretty brief. The protagonist's crush is the sole calligraphy club member and is really into it if that interests you...

I know there's other examples but I don't recall...

Argh, I keep getting flashbacks to random pages which have it in, but matching them with the correct manga is frustrating. For a long while its just been a big shounen-y blob in my mind lol.

Aphorism-each student writes a character on themselves at a mysterious school which then becomes a magical power.
Akaboshi - ibun suikoden- has it more than a lot of the ones below and the power belongs to a fairly key side character. (calligraphy)
Gakuen alice-it's barely mentioned, but is one of a cacophony of magical powers. (drawings)
Qwan-there's quite a lot of the power about in this, the mc doesn't have it but its key to the plot. (calligraphy/characters)
Mushishi-I'm like 70% sure there's at least one arc with this in, but I read it a while back and there are so many arcs I may be mixing it with something else. (drawings)
One piece-barely in it though. Has one side villain with the power in one arc. (drawings/colours)
Naruto-has a side character with the ability but he only appears around the time I dropped it, so I don't know how much he's in it. (drawings)
Genkaku picasso-drawings become portals to peoples minds.
Lasboss x hero-gets sucked into his own manga where he can alter its course by drawing.
Billy bat-drawings of a bat come to life, a lot of the time its comic style, but sometimes its calligraphy style.

I was reading Natsume Yuujinchou when I posted this question, and just finished it. I've read Aphorism, Gakuen Alice and One Piece as well.

The other recommendations look good, I'll definitely be checking them out! Thanks! smile

Keep the suggestions coming! biggrin

Itsuya-san is the only one that I can think of that hasn't been mentioned.

Oh, and if you're ok with light shounen-ai, Kabe no Naka no Tenshi (Bikke) qualifies too.

You're not mistaken. There's the kid whose left hand drawings become alive. Even pictographic kanji.
