Just out of curiosity, does anyone else stop reading a series online or digitally if the scanlation quality goes from what i guess can be considered standard (cropped, leveled, single spread pages) to less than average quality (all double page, no leveling and only basic editing etc)? or even if the translation is difficult to understand?

I personally find it difficult to motivate myself to read a series or continue reading the series if i find a large portion of it (i like to read longer series) is poorly scanlated, and in some cases i don't even bother and just give up.

Now, before i get crucified for dissing on some scanlators 'quality', I would like to add that I am a cleaner for a group myself, and i understand that we do what we do for the fans, but isn't it kind of frustrating when said fans have no clue what the heck is going on because the quality is lacking. Don't worry, I am not naming and shaming, just curious if there are people like me who think this

If there are no other scans, I'll continue reading, despite the fact that it hurts to look, unless it's like, unreadable and it's gonna take effort to figure out. Then I wont bother.

If two groups are scanning the same series and one has better quality than the other, even if they're slower, I will go for the better quality. Quality scans make the enjoyment of reading manga even better because you can really appreciate the art work and the feel the manga is trying to give, especially if there's a good typesetter that try their best to follow a similar font that the raws are using, and not just make the text really thick to cover up redraws for example.
Most leechers miss things like that though. Unless you work/ed in scanlation, I guess little things like that go over peoples heads ┐(￣ヮ￣)┌

But yeah, if it's a series I'm really into and I wanna see what happens next, I'll check out the dodgy scans.

Bad quality definitely is annoying, especially when the person preparing the scanlations was clearly slacking off. I understand that some people may not be great at cleaning scans, and I know it's sometimes difficult and usually time-consuming, but it's not an excuse for ugly, hard to read font, leaving some speech bubbles untranslated or covering them with white rectangles. Or leaving the scans double-paged, seriously, it's not that difficult to divide the pages.

However, when the manga is very good, I can forget about these and just focus on the story. But I can't do this when the translation is very bad, in such cases I usually drop the manga and wait for better quality scanlations to appear.

I have dropped series before because the scanlation quality was poor. There have been a couple of times when I didn't start a series because I thought the quality would bother me (things like the scans being too dark or text being cut off). But the biggest problem is bad translation. There's no point in reading something when I can't understand what's going on.

I agree when the translations are unread-able then I not only drop the series but whatever other series the scanlators are doing. Although, I know its abit unfair to the other manga's its pretty obvious at that specific time the scanlation team doesn't have any decent PR's or QC's. I really don't mind if the sound effects are redrawn aslong as there is a side note stating what it means. Usually if you read the translations correctly if they're well done you would be able to deduce what the effect meant. (if that makes any sense)
Now I personally have never read a double-paged scan because frankly to me that's just stupid. Don't get me wrong im not talking about you reader's who have read through said manga. I've always read manga on my phone or tablet and having to zoom in to specific panels is just frustrating to read. I deeply appreciate any scans whether it be good or bad. I understand the double paged scans that both pages consume one image in between. Any more than that is crossing the line Its just may be me but ever since my wall plug burned both my tablet and phone I find myself reading manga on my Laptop be it be through Online Reader's (Batoto) or just downloading and using a program to view it. Having to zoom in or scroll just to get thorugh it is just not my thing.

I agree with this. I mean, if I wanted to read a great story, I would pick up a book, but I read manga because I also enjoy the art that goes with the story. And some typesetters dont even cover up redraws, they cover up the SFXs, but that is the cleaners fault for not removing them.

If it is a good series, I will continue to read it aswell, but it has to be exceptional. I continued reading Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori despite that halfway through the scans went dodgy for a few volumes.



Yeah, I see what you mean. I read Mars despite the fact it was entirely double-paged (I think it was anyway, It was a long time ago)



That's exactly why I started this thread! I was going to read Saver but when I saw the quality of the scanlations, I gave up.



Being a scanlator myself, i can appreciate the time and effort that goes into a chapter of manga, but I too read my manga on a mobile device, so double page spread series kills my eyes so much.

I tend to avoid Manga that as it's first dozen of chapters in bad quality since it ruins my reading experience. However if I'm deep into the story and the scanlation quality decreases I'll continue reading it anyway, hoping someone will re-do them so I can re-read them and enjoy them more.
