It's a very unique style of drawing. It's a pretty good drawing for a 10 year old.

I never said I could draw....I never said you can't either. I have friends who draw very good and their lvl of artistic style matches that drawing when they were 13. It's relative comparison, not to be taken seriously.

Well I won't say it's good... because well honestly it's not. It's a beginning and everybody has to start somewhere. The road to become a true artist is long and even if you've got something like 20 years of experience you will still find yourself learning new stuffs.

One good thing though is that you don't imitate. When I first started I used to imitate a lot, it does help in the beginning but it's certainly no good if you really want to progress... You've got to learn a tiny little bit of anatomy if you want to draw pretty looking things... but you will certainly if you do it seriously ( which is not my case at all seeing what I do and the number of years I've been doing that -_-)^^

Anyway coming back to your pics I can't tell you that what I used to draw was by far uglier.. I kept them because sometimes when I feel I just can't do anything properly it encourages me seeing how far I've progressed.

Anyway you shouldn't listen to your friend who told you it sucked... It's not really encouraging... My little brother used to tell me what I drew sucked big time but that at least it was getting better and coming from him I can tell you it encouraged me a whole lot!!!! He's not someone who compliments at all. Even when my friends started to tell me " oh for once it looks decent" he kept saying it sucked. It was a honest judgment and he used to tell me things that seemed ugly or weird but that I hadn't noticed. Tell your friend to do that, at least you'll know what you have to work on the most.

If I've got some time next-week-end ( I've got exams this week -_-) I'll try to scan and show you old stuffs I did when I began some years ago ^^ at least It will encourage you ( I feel a bit ashamed to show them but I thing it's gonna be good encouragement ^^) ( I know it's nasty but I look at ugly drawings to encourage myself)

I just got my scanner recently so all I can show you are these two pics:

The first one which is colored is the character who represents me : http://lapetiteplume.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/la-plume-22-12-2 007-draft-coloured02reduced.jpg]

The second one is unfinished... and uncleaned:
http://lapetiteplume.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/chamuchamu-0 2-01-2007reduced-anduncleaned.jpg

Anyway no need to go to any school just train, look for advice and look at anatomy books. Real figures, nude and so on... even you've got the impression you've wasted 3 hours on something ugly and you're gonna throw your sketch in the bin don't worry, the simple fact that you've made an effort to draw, to think about how to put this here or that there is a progress in itself!!!!

And here's my own personal critic, On a rate between 0 and 10 I give myself a 3. I haven't studied lights and shadows, perspective, still got lots of trouble for drawing from above and below position, hands, feet, muscles etc etc...
That's why again, keep it going ^^ Reminds me of Hikaru no Go... You get better yes but there's no end to the road you've begun to travel on ^^

Sorry about my post, Ladyviollet. i always tend to be too nice and don't give any criticisms.

10 year old...that was also my first impression.

How about no coloring at all, at least for some time? That could help you concentrate on the style. Well, working on the style.

Go for black&white. Inking is a lot of fun ( and it teaches patience, dammit laugh )

Ladyviollet, I'm going to give you a piece of advice that you might not like to hear: Don't draw toony stuff. Until you're a good bit better, you ought to work more in a realistic style, drawing terrible things like still life, or interesting things like portraits (I draw a lot of portraits, myself). That will give you the grasp on anatomy and the like that you need to draw toony stuff without it looking off. That's the best advice I was ever given as far as art goes. I started in with things like portraits, and now my toons, if nowhere near perfect, look considerably better than they ever did before I took up drawing from life.

Also, I would advise you to explore multiple mediums. Things you learn from one can easily be applied to another. For example, I started in pencil, and migrated to doing 3D work with computers, and now I do both. Coming back to pen and paper after a year of doing largely only 3D stuff left me with a much firmer grasp on perspective and lighting than I could only have picked up in five times as long with 2D goods.

So go get that friend that told you that your work sucks, and tell her this: "You think it sucks? Help it get better: Hold still for a while so I can draw you."

And whoever said not to color with crayons is very wrong. Crayons are the second most fun things to color with (first goes to oil pastels). It just takes practice to make coloring with crayons look anything but juvenile.

Edit: One last piece of advice: Keep all of your sketches. That way, when you get discouraged because you think you're not improving enough, you can look at the old ones and see the improvement. You can also use them to motivate you to practice more: by looking at how bad you once were, you ought to be driven to get a bit better.

yeeeea nikka you know how to do it.
you REALLY know how to do it
only way to get any better is to start drawing REAL PEOPLE *gasp*
the way to learn isn't cartoon to realistic
it's realistic to cartoon.

I don't get it. Are you saying that I'm right, that I'm wrong, or that I'm stating the obvious?
