Seriously? People do that? I guess if one were to analyze one's motive behind one'a action of mail theft. One would say that one have some what a troubling belief that mail theft would bring one closer to one's victims. Thus stealing mail makes one not so lonely.
I heard on the news, I think 2 years ago, there was this postal worker that was stealing the packages that were used to send Christmas presents during the holiday season. The person (I think it was a female, too) open the packages and kept the good stuff and then disposed of the other gifts secretly.
There was a person to reassure the public that it was an anomaly situation.
