I'm looking for some anime that my 8 year-old niece could watch with me.

i was thinking comedy, something we could laugh at. Action would be awesome as that is what i generally prefer.

for example, i was thinking of introducing her to maybe fruits basket, Haibane Reimei, although i need to finish that before i show it to her, one piece maybe, which is always frickin awesome, and etc

Thanks in advance

Eh, I assume KILION is joking since those are gory as heck and there's no comedy.

You could try (based on action/comedy/eight-year-old niece)...
Keroro Gunsou
Fairy Tail
Tiger & Bunny

And maybe these...
Sketchbook
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
Umi Monogatari

Well...the first anime I watched was when I was four~
Of course, Sailor Moon

I agree with ShadowSakura, magical girl anime was the fad when I was a little girl ^^~

Tokyo Mew Mew
Cardcaptor Sakura
Kamichama Karin
Shugo Chara!

Since people are probably gonna recommend popular or recent shows, which you might have already heard of, I'll help out by introducing you to old shows that I used to watch when I was a kid, from the late 90s to early 2000s. These are a mix of comedy + action.

Rune Soldier/Magical Soldier Louie
Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try
Ghost Stories
Samurai Pizza Cats
Doraemon (movies series)
Zettai Muteki Raijioh
Yaiba
Mashin Hero Wataru (3 seasons)
Saber Marionette series

And like ShadowSakura said, some magical girls show.

Card Captor Sakura
Akazukin Cha Cha
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Mahou Tsukai Tai! (Magic Users Club) OVA + TV series

Some of my favourite recent shows that hasn't been mentioned.

Negima!! (Season 2)
Seitokai no Ichizon
Mayoi Neko Overrun
Seto no Hanayome (My Girlfriend is a Mermaid)

All of them are suitable for an 8 years old girl, however seeing the examples you mentioned (especially Haibane Reimei), I'm thinking 8 years old girls might be too sophisticated for the shows I recommended.

Tokyo Mew Mew and Sailor Moon are some girly action animes- they fight bad guys and monsters, but they're "magical girl."

Hayao Miyazaki films are always fun- Castle in the Sky, the Cat Returns.

Law of Ueki is kind of fun.

I've only seen the first two episodes of haibane renmei a few months ago, so all i really remember of it was it looked like it was cute.

And thanks everybody for the suggestions, I honestly was not expecting so many responses ^^ I really appreciate the mix of older/newer shows.

Can't believe i didn't think of miyazaki!

Princess Tutu too mature for kids, maybe?
Tokyo Godfathers lots of wtf moments, very enjoyable and educational.
Kaidan Restaurant children show with horror (that's what they say but you know anime, they are not scary in the least)
Level E troll show with healthy strong men. too bad they are aliens. anyway, giggles guaranteed.
Cyber Coil i don't normally recommend this to kids. but its main cast are children! and it has great story! (well, Neon Genesis Evangelion was also originally a show for kids - and i remember laughing a lot laugh )

i found the reset story rather disturbing. my little brother (10) got nightmares from it

and for the other anime you suggested aren´t really for kids.
Princess Tutu has a PG-13 level of violence, frightening scenes and some nudity.
Level E is seinen and there is a reason it is seinen
the other two also include tradgedy and this isn´t something you show a small child
