I got that speech a lot too, but then one day, my programming teacher told me that Wikipedia is one of the best sources on the internet -- the other teachers are just too old-fashioned to realize it.

Actually, I agree more with the professors. Its a good source for a starting place - but since anyone can update it there's really no guarantee that' they're right. It's the same thing as Internet sources - you really need to double check who wrote it and cross check it with other sources. So it's not a matter of old-fashioned, but encouraging good research techniques and double checking where your sources are from.

Well, there is no "real" garantie that papers that go threw peer review or books published by firms are truer. I remember seeing school math books with a lot of mistakes. I heard that a year or so ago they did an expert review comparing Wikipedia with the Enzyklopedia Britanica and i think Britanica had 2 mistakes per 1000 and wikipedia 3. Thats pretty darn good.
I am not saying wikipedia is always right, i'm just saying all sources have a certain amount of error. Just because a article passed peer review doesn't mean its contents are proven. It happend at least once that somebody wrote Bullshit on purpose to see if he could get it published and managed to do just that.

I am a huge wikipedia fan! Its like watching TV, i check something, and before i know it i spent an hour following link to link. I start checking the virgin tech massacre and end up at Charles Manson and so on. I am sure the same stuff happens to others.

Didn't say I don't use Wikipedia too, bully_jesus, just that I'd never site it on a school paper. But when I just need to look something up quick it's indeed my best friend. biggrin

Wiki ftw!!! smile wink grin

Encyclopedias are too heavy and cost too much altogether dead The one my family currently has is like 10 years old. I never really liked Encarta. I don't think it's ever really helped me out, so yeah...

Wiki is the best; always helpful eyes

I like to use the Urban Dictionary for unknown slang though smile wink grin

Uncyclopedia isn't even remotely funny - its jokes are lame and about as clever as baseless flaming. I've read articles on subjects that I like and don't like, that I've laughed at before, and there just isn't anything remotely humourous past the first sentence. How can people even consider it to be comedy?

(Wait, wasn't that Charles?) Actually... no. The part about being like Naruto was good, but there's only so many times I can read about sex and rape in an article before realizing that only the most immature of prepubescent boys would actually find that funny. And sadly, that isn't the only article that completely overuses the concept of sex (although at least Koda Kumi deserves a mention of it).

Seriously. It could have been funny the first time, but can't the writers think of any jokes that DON'T involve sex, rape, or STDs?

come on man, STD was perfect. People die when get hit by Akumas. It fits the logical assumption that STD killed them too. biggrin

I chose Uncyclopedia because I only get on Wikipedia to see when new seasons for shows that I like are coming out, or if I need a bit of help with a research paper.

Beside, the only articles that aren't funny on Uncyclopedia are always getting deleted as soon as they're made, so that's a bonus.

Tried it, but that site is shit. It's so blatantly racist.

And now it has ads EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE, so you can tell how good that site is now. roll eyes

Er... The fun part is that if you actually talk to some of the people writing those articles, they're not racist or as bitchy as those articles at all. It's all written for shits and giggles. xD

That's why you were told not to click if you take things seriously.

This is sort of... Wiki for Trolls, if you want. xD And I love it.
